Knife pet Peeves.

- Combo-Edges and serrations in general.

- Asymmetrical grinds. Chisel grinds. Uneven grind patterns on knives, BENCHMADE... Why does my $100+ Mini-Rukus have uneven grinds and yet my sub $50 knives are just fine? Yeah it's ridiculous.

- Bad ergonomics. You kind of have to go out of your way to make a knife have bad ergonomics.

- "Do-it-all" knives. Knives have limitations.

- Ridiculous marketing, over-hyped knives.

- Knife fanboys. You know, those guys that stick to one or two companies and talk down about any knife that isn't produced by their beloved companies.

- Cheap material knives that are priced at ridiculous prices.

- People that praise their knives so much but when they post pics of them they have no wear. Basically people that have safe queens that they say are great knives, but they never use them. I know the difference from keeping a blade maintained and a blade that hasn't been used. Nothing against collectors, but if you don't use your knife then don't brag about it and say how well it performs.

- The constant use of the terms "tactical" or "self-defense" in knife descriptions. Also the idiots that think they could actually kill someone with one or two stabs from their "tactical self-defense" knife. Yes, knives can be used for self-defense, but so can a frying pan or a pencil or even a rock.

- People asking about the strength of folding knives. If you want a strong knife, get a fixed blade! Also people that complain about blade play on folders, there will ALWAYS be blade play on a folding knife. That is unless you tighten the pivot so tight that you can't move the blade. Locking up like a "bank vault" "no movement what-so-ever" "it's a tank" are all just fanboy responses. Again, get a fixed blade if you want an absolute solid knife.

- The paper cutting test. What does this prove? Your knife is sharp at the time being. IDK this "test" is just really pointless and has grown into a peeve.

That's the gist of my peeves, I'm sure there are more.

The thing that gets me is post after post that go something like this: " Just got my new $250 Hesto-Presto, Fancy-Schmancy knife and I used it to cut up mushrooms and celery for tonight'd dinner. Worked great! "

I didn't read all the comments here (don't got the time) but I hope I'm not the first to mention this
Blade Play, I hate any blade play

What bothers me even more than what you stated is when someone makes a lengthy review of a knife and they don't find anything that they would change on the knife. I've held and used quite a few nice knives in my day and there is always something that I wish was different about them. When a review states that a knife is perfect I tend to dismiss the opinion of the reviewer.

I can't stand serrated partially serrated blades; give me all plain edge or all serrations.

Fixed Blade knives with Zytel or rubber handles. I don't mind G-10 or Micarta though.

Bead blasted blades; Why don't we just help the blades rust faster? At least if its polished or coated its easier to maintain.

I have a box of knives that would disagree with that statement.

I absolutely 100% disagree with you. I have many knives that don't have blade play. You are very wrong on that statement.

I dont know what kind of crappy folders you are into, but I have several folder that have essentially ZERO blade play. Ever hold a Sebenza? Tighten the pivot as tight as you want...it opens smooth as ever.

And what if you cut paper after you cut something, to see if there is any difference in sharpness? What if you are cutting the paper slowly while listening carefully to see if there are any inperfections in the edge?

Ill agree that cutting paper alone isnt that meaningful, nor is it an indicator of real sharpness.

.......

People spending over $300 on a knife and rationalizing it's a deal. Not hating.. just jealous. :-)

people that claim that all you need is a 4" "bushcrafter" (PUKE!!!!! :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: ) for all your wilderness needs.

well i say this!

COME ON up to BIG TREE, BIG FOREST, STEEP TERRAIN country here in BC and try to get thru the woods with your little bushy crafter! THIS IS CHOPPER KNIFE, CHAINSAW and AXE COUNTRY! if you want to run with the big dawgs, you got to stop being a PIDDLING LITTLE PUPPY!

Any time you want, man. Done the Appalachians and the woods of Northern Michigan with nothing but a 4" fixed and a Vic Soldier.

I find a lot of Busse owners annoying. Whats the purpose of owning 10 $400 knives that are just going to sit in a safe? I can understand having a few of different sizes that you're actually going to use, but have 5 of the same knife? thats rediculous.

I also hate when people pull a knife out at every opportunity. I'm sorry but you don't need a knife to open a letter or to cut a sandwich. Most of us are grown and can handle a sandwich that hasn't been cut. Just cause you have a knife doesnt mean you have to use it.

idiots who say a folder is useless for defence. put them barehanded against 2-3 guys with bats and knives, and ill bet they'd appreciate anything. you kid yourself if you think your better off barehanded than with a qualitiy folder. yeah a gun or large fixed blade is ideal, but that aint always possible

jimping on the back of knives that is only cut into the scales (....cold steel) but not into the steel itself....USELESS!

So, on one hand, you complain that we have too many knives that we don't use. And on the other hand you complain that we use a knife for things like cutting open a letter.
Can I use my knives or not?

Seriously guys, why are we getting on to people who collect knives, at bladeforums? Who cares if some guy has 10 Busse's that are all similar.
I'm sure some would think you don't need that expensive boat, or motorcycle, or a car that goes so fast.
Everyone likes their own things, and if I could have 10 Busse Battle Mistresses, I'd take 'em.

That would be like me going to a Corvette show and asking a guy why the F*** do you have so many corvettes?

You're right. We should keep this to what aspects of knives we don't like rather than what people we don't like. It could get pretty nasty otherwise and would most likely get moved to W&C.

Yea, and these are two different things. If you have money to spend, by all means spend it. I just can't fathom having 10 Busse's and not using a single one for what they're meant. And for the letter arguement, I mean for people that just go around looking for things to cut with their knives. If a situation arises, use a blade, but don't be obnoxious about it. I hate being somewhere and watching Joe Schmoe pull out his Military to open a bag of chips or something along those lines.

I like how I get jumped on when I mention the blade play comment. Just proves my point. I have always noticed there is blade play in folding knives, maybe it's just me.

As for the guy trying to belittle me by asking if I've held a Sebenza (again with the talking down on my "crappy" knives because he has a Sebenza), no I have not handled one but I own my fair share of Kershaw's, Benchmades, Spydercos, etc. There is always blade play, and no I don't mean the blade wobbles back and forth. When I open the knife and grab the blade and move the blade I can feel that it isn't one piece of metal with the handle (which is the way it should be). Hell, my ZT 302 even has blade play, by all means I'm not bashing folding knives but it's a pet peeve of mine when people deny any blade play at all because they think they have to prove something or whatever reasoning they have.

Seriously people, get off your high horses.

Paper cutting comment, yeah cutting paper to see sharpness before and after cutting other materials is one thing, but my peeve is when people just cut paper and say they have a sharp knife. CCC knives can get sharp, doesn't show how well they hold the edge.

Knives that aren't Knives: Paper weights, wallhangers, fantasy knives, replicas... and heavily pushed PRODUCTION knives. If it's unusable as a knife, don't put an edge on it.

Gun people who give you the eye for having a knife. You know those types, they'll carry every day in case of crackheads and psychos... but if a cardboard box comes at them, it's all over.

Liner/Frame lock. Never met one I trust, at least slipjoints don't pretend not to want to eat me. And you have to put flesh under the blade to close it. COME ON!
