Are we buying more knives than we realize??? Care to share your knife purchase rate, that is, how frequently did you purchase a knife on average, over the past year? Average buying one every 3 days? Every 30 days on average? etc?

Divide 365 by the total number of knives purchased in the past year. My rate, for better or worse, is 4.6. So over the last year, I've purchased a knife every 4.6 days... feels like a lot! 365 / 80 (purchased 80 in last 365 days) = 4.6.

I’ll admit, I bought one earlier today… I had lost a schrade sharpfinger on the freeway the other day when I was riding. Finally got around to replacing it. I don’t buy a ton of knives nowadays, probably one every month or two, with those being either usually to replace one I lost or as a gift. My last “this could be my new carry knife” was a zt 0452cf last January.

let’s not worry about how often I buy other tools though. Wives and girlfriends of mechanics everywhere know the “but babe it’s from snap on, it will last a lifetime it’s an investment.” line.
 
I've bought 4 for myself this far, with another being ready next month. I have two for sale, and I traded two. I sold one and gave away four. One of the ones I bought was to replace the old messed up one, so it doesn't really count.

However, I did buy three knives as gifts.

Last year, hmm. I bought 5 I believe. As I've gotten into custom and high end stuff the quantity has gone down.

I'm well past the cycle of purchasing and instantly searching for the next phase of the hobby, so not too frequently any more. The thing is, there's no real pattern for me, and I also don't keep track of what I bought when. I can go many months without a purchase, or buy multiples in a week if the mood strikes. I'm rather content with everything I have and don't feel the need for more, but David C Anderson can pop up in my YouTube feed at any moment and send me running to my computer for to make a purchase.

Sorry. I tried but I lost track at 130 since sometime in mid August…

My ADHD wouldn’t let me get past that without starting over…

Edit - I am close to my limit, and besides the 4-5 in the mail and 17 preorders arriving between the end of this month and next spring I only have a few left on my wish list.

I’ll probably liquidate a bunch of Civivi or CJRB beaters, and maybe some duplicates of Spyderco and benchmade, etc. I’m going to focus on the nicer knives and ones that are harder to find.

I've been bringing down the number of crazy by around half each year over the last couple of years. Two years ago it was a rate of 4.6 (78 knives). Last year it was down to a rate of 9.3 (39 knives), with the plan of buying just 24, but there were some sales of shiny things. This year the plan is to stick to one dozen knives (30 rate) and I'm already there, so I might be over by one or two or three or four.
 
I bought 5 this year and I’m about to order number 6 as soon as I decide which one to get. I have a list.
