Been at a rate of 3-4 per year past few years. I see this slowing down. I am at a point where I see a knife I really like, then realize it's similar enough to one I already have, and I talk myself out of it. This has been working for me for several months now. Future experience not guaranteed by previous results.

I don't understand how you don't have a Zaan Tanto already. I hope you can sleep ok tonight. But if you find yourself awake at 3 a.m. thinking about it, PM me and I can send you a bunch of links to retailers that have it "out of stock" so you can get back to sleep.

Off the cuff, I’ve bought about one a month (I know, I need to get out more).

I’ve given away about half that many, and made a few also.

I buy a lot more hand tools than knives. Sometimes to upgrade ones in my working set, some as backups, some to stash at friends’ and family’s houses. I have this fantasy that if everybody I know is tooled up, when I visit and they say “Oh, while you’re here can you just take a look at my leaky sink valve?” all the tools needed for the repair will already be right there.

First of all:

A man shouldn't need a reason to want to buy (yet) another knife.

The rate at which I buy knives is on an as-needed basis.

Lately, that means birthdays and Christmas gifts for others.

From 2016-2018 I was averaging almost 2 knives per month. Then for a while I was buying 1-2 per year.

I’ve bought 6-8 knives per year in 2022 & 2023, but most of those have been for giffs and special purposes.

I don’t buy much for general EDC anymore. My coffers are pretty stuffed in that regard and it’s gotta be something that really grabs me. Probably 2 last year and 1 this year…though I may pick up another before years end if I can find the right micro praetorian or a SOCOM Alpha.

One or two a year now. But it was double digits for a few years before that. Maybe one folder and one fixed blade per year is the perfect rate for me.

= 4 keepers

That's one every 26 days. A bit more than I would have thought -- but way fewer than a few years ago. I've been steadily trimming and refining my collection over the past three years or so, and the numbers bear that out.

I believe he bought 457 knives this month, but I'm losing track.

Sorry. I tried but I lost track at 130 since sometime in mid August…

My ADHD wouldn’t let me get past that without starting over…

Edit - I am close to my limit, and besides the 4-5 in the mail and 17 preorders arriving between the end of this month and next spring I only have a few left on my wish list.

I’ll probably liquidate a bunch of Civivi or CJRB beaters, and maybe some duplicates of Spyderco and benchmade, etc. I’m going to focus on the nicer knives and ones that are harder to find.

So, I took the time to count - the number of knives I've bought in 2023 is 410. I have given away about 40 as a guess, and I guess I sold about 10 (traded maybe 10). That leaves about 360 in 285 days = 1.26 knives per day (1.263157894736842). If I include what I've sold and given away, it's 1.4386 knives/day.

It's not as bad as I feared, until I realized that's only the last 10.5 months out of the past 61 years...

Haha indeed. Speaking of tantos , a large Inkosi tanto is at the top of my list. Trying to decide between micarta inlays or a PJ version. Also , I keep looking at the Microtech SOCOM elite and SHF. Jesus , it just never ends. And I don’t want it to
