Knife Purchase Rate

I just bought ten yesterday. Moreover, these ten knives are only three models. I bought four of each model and two of one model. I don't want to calculate. Moreover, I didn't even touch the things I bought, I threw them in a corner with their boxes. A while ago, I bought 8 cold steel la Fontaine Throwers just because I found them cheaper.

So, I took the time to count - the number of knives I've bought in 2023 is 410. I have given away about 40 as a guess, and I guess I sold about 10 (traded maybe 10). That leaves about 360 in 285 days = 1.26 knives per day (1.263157894736842). If I include what I've sold and given away, it's 1.4386 knives/day.

It's not as bad as I feared, until I realized that's only the last 10.5 months out of the past 61 years...
This. Is. Awesome.

30 so far this year, a big chunk of those just in the last couple of months, including three CRKs that I’d been telling myself I’d never buy. I don’t know, I had a moment of weakness. Or three or four. At least I did sell a couple. I have one or two more cheapies I may or may not grab before the year is out. Total collection right now is sitting at 50, not counting 11 SAKs, four multi tools, and three David Mary’s. And a partridge in a pear tree.

One or two this year(?) I cant remember but have slowed significantly. I don't sell knives so as the accumulation has grown my purchases have slowed significantly.
I am eyeballing the Stretch K390 as this has been on my want list for a bit (Endela K390 in my pocket now)

Good think about Knives is they retain a good chunk of their value if you are inclined to buy and sell. Especially buying used.
My boss currently has 100+ guitars. His hobby is buying and selling and has been doing for 20 years, he does not even play very well! To each their own!

I have slowed down a lot this year but still managed to buy 9 so far, sold or gifted 19, I can see maybe one more purchase this year. Which brings me to over 100 in the collection, the vast majority are folders. I plan on thinning down some more, it has been a while since I was buying a bunch at a time. The knives I buy I am more selective in what I want and less spur of the moment now. I also I have found for the vast majority of the knives I have sold or given away I only miss a couple. This does not count the more than 70 kitchen knives, which I have not added to that total in many years.

Thank you for providing all of us with a valuable service, DocJekl! :D

Mrs. Dadpool: "Didn't you just buy a knife?"

Dadpool: "Yeah...but I don't buy nearly as many as some people! Here, look at this DocJekl fella's post. He bought two knives while we were having this conversation!"

;)🤣

When I initially joined it was game on. Now after several "How many knives does one man need?" comments from my accountant, my purchasing has tapered off somewhat.
Trying to go with one every quarter (4 per year).

Wow! You all make me feel like Mr. Thrifty! I should encourage my wife to read this thread.

I’m officially at 0 this year, though I did place an order for a CRK Mnandi (ebony) this year and have another Mnandi (box elder) on order since 3/22. I think the wait may have been four years in ‘22 and it’s six now so …. it’s going to be a while.

I feel better now. Thank you.

I don't feel better. Counting them has kinda shocked me into slowing down. I didn't buy any today, although 5 that I ordered earlier in the week arrived today. And I still have many preorders from drops overt the past few months that will ship in the next 1-6 months.

I really want to reorganize my knife bins into one with all the knives I want to carry the most as EDC, instead of organizing them by brand. I'd set up another with knives that are part of completing a collection but don't need to be carried as part of my EDC, and then another with those that I need to get rid of - mostly the ones that aren't worth keeping here and just take up space.

It would be a pain to sell off a lot of my inexpensive knives, unless I sell 3-4 like Civivi and CJRB in a "knife bundle" to combine shipping costs. I'd have to sell them for less than they'd pay new, but for enough that it's worth my time to deal with it. I'd almost rather keep a $50 Civivi than sell it for $35 and spend $10-15 to ship it - the cost depending on whether I box it and print a label, vs dropping it off at the nearest convenient 3rd party shipper right down the street. With my disability some days I just don't want to leave the house, and don't want to get sales ready to ship either.

Oh goodness--- there once was a time where I bought at such a pace where I simply lost count of what I was buying. I discovered many knives brand new in boxes I forgot I even purchased, oops... flashfoward, I'm now an ebay best seller 🤣

He's just started to follow me, so he can pull up my profile real quick the next time his wife notices his purchases! 🤣

So far 4 emojis approve, 4 think I'm nuts, and 1 thinks I'm funny...

I think I bought two this year? Maybe one?

I've made so many decisions about what I like and what I don't, that very little on the factory side of things tickles my wallet. I'm not ready to start popping for mid-techs or customs, either.
