knife rags vs forums?

Gotta stay away from the fanboys, though. They think if you get a lemon that is a product of their favorite manufacturer, it is your fault. If you post a bad comment (never, ever post a bad review of some of knives so well loved here) you will get creamed. I can't imagine the screaming and teeth gnashing of someone posted a full review (not just a comment) on certain knives they found to be lacking. On this site, it would be extremely difficult to get an honest review on about 4-5 different knife brands if it were negative. I think that keeps the honesty factor down a lot as a lot of folks just don't want to be torn to pieces for their opinion.

So true.

I had a bum Glock. Posting about it on Glock Talk I still have guys who personally insult me in unrelated threads because they remember what I said about my Glock not working properly. Within the thread I started there were all kinds of comments about why it was my fault it wasn't working properly. And I'm a 6 year member with like 25k posts who had his first problem with a Glock (out of 5) ever.

Some people just can't stand to be reminded that man cannot product products that are 100%, 100% of the time

I read that article today at work and was quite pissed at the insults the very individuals that support his magazine. I've been a customer of that magazine after I stole the first edition as a kid (not proud of it but can't change it now). The part that got me the most was when he was criticizing us for not knowing what we are talking about when an issue before the blowhard "Gunny" states emphatically that bow drills cannot start fires. Um, does the magazine not in the past employed Ron Hood, Jeff Randall and others that I am pretty sure I've seen start fires with bow drills. In fact I think some of the people that buy the magazine have started one (sadly I have not). But Dick's contributors are not to be questioned. After reading the opinion of Dick today I'm pretty sure I am done. Just because the Internet is stealing your customers doesn't mean you should insult those customers that have stayed- does he not think many knife lovers use both?

Add to it the fact that he is a member here, and posted until Dec. 29/07.

After almost 20 years of support this is not how I expect to be treated!

Yes, I still can't see taking the ol' laptop with you into the can.

Also, that editorial got people talking about TK, which will generate more sales.

Without my iPhone, this would be my life:

I work for a company with 20,000 employees. 1/4 of them are broadcast television and the other 15,000 are publishing. Publishing is at a TERRIBLE low for advertising revenue and the revenue stream is from advertising - not circulation.

Magazines are the worst of the lot for basically being long, unaccountable infomercials.

Except for people like me that use the editorial to stop supporting them. They need 2 people to replace me to get more sales, and I expect that the magazine will suffer as a result. I now feel that only Blade is worthy of my support, because KI has disgustingly horrible pictures and I do not care for their articles. And it seems Blade is more and more about the Blade show or soldiers, and I care little about reading these articles in every second edition, plus with distributers making it harder for my supplier to get them in- it looks like my collection will end in the near future, unfortunate but true.

You know, I pay over $20 an issue for some magazines. I open them up and they have very pointed critical commentary, they have very few ads, the photography is unbelievably top notch, the magazine itself is a work of art that feels great.

Two of these are The Surfer's Journal and Communication Arts.

I wish the knife world had a magazine like these. where we pay quarterly for in depth interviews with top makers and manufacturing presidents, where we get factory tours, where products are assessed honestly and poor products don't ever see the dignity of print.

I got into knives in 1995 and the knife magazines were the main source of information at the time until I came across
various Internet knife forums, including this one a few years later.

I agree with the ads causing problems with various knife reviews. But my main problem is that the quality of the writing
has gone downhill quite a bit over the past few years. And this goes for a lot of other industries that are covered by
magazines too. I also miss certain writers that have passed on in recent years, Chuck Karwan was one of the better gun and knife writers out there.

There is much more competition in informational sources these days then there has ever been before. There is a lot more junk to sort through too. I can honestly say that I have purchased more new knives in the past year than I ever have
before because of people talking about them on the various Internet knife forums or Youtube videos.

In comparing online and print sources of information, one other factor for online sites is moderated vs. totally open forums. I much prefer forum with good moderation (like this one). Unmoderated tends to go off topic and get pointless real fast.
