Knife recommendation for a retiring friend

Gave him a 112 (110 too big for where we work) and he never liked the long back lock. Otherwise I would have thought about maybe ordering one of the new slim 110 in MagnaCut. Good suggestion though.

I don't mind sharpening for a good friend. Add to that if it's an honestly used edge. Even if he's not allowed to be near my Cru-Carta.
 
A crazy thought, how about a k390 Spyderco and upgrade the scales to micarta or titanium? The midlock is easier to use vs the Buck backlock.
 
Buck 110 auto if he wants to carry it in a sheath or pouch. 110 classic slim is also a really tough knife especially in magnacut.
 
Honestly a higher end custom or semi custom utility knife might be a better option for him. They make carbide and carbide coated blades for them now.
 
I am a Spyderco nut, and can’t imagine not carrying one…..however the Demko shark lock is pretty awesome in that it allows you to open/close it easily even with gloves on, but while being able to keep fingers out of the way. You can open/close the blade slowly, or flick it open/closed. You can tighten the pivot to make it even more slowly controlled.

Whatever knife you decide to get him- it is a really nice gesture and I am sure will be appreciated.
 
Not sure how much you want to spend, have you looked at the Worksharp RMX line?

For about $150, you can get the reverse tanto, with a 3V blade or the drop point in M390. They also have a compact drop point, M390 as well.

They're going to be releasing a clip point, in M390 next month. Listed to sell for $180.

A K390 Stretch with aftermarket dressed up scales (assuming such a thing exists) would be pretty great. Not a bad idea at all.

He didn't care for the 112 I gave him a while back because of the long lock bar requiring both hands. I tried showing him how I press down on the lock and use the spine on the back of anything around me but he didn't like that at all for whatever reason.

Hadn't even given that a thought at all. And you aren't kidding about how fancy they are now. I bet you can even get fancy little carry cases for the extra blades.

Several years ago we had a boss that had been really good to us retire and we split the price on a Case Tribal Lock with the flag bone covers and had the blade engraved with his military and civil service years. He really liked that and you could see just from the look in his face he appreciated it. I'm hoping to duplicate that again, fingers crossed.

That reverse tanto looks for sure like a style he prefers. Adding that to the list. I may have to throw a dart at a board eventually to pick.

The knives can be set up as normal flip open or automatic. They come set up as a regular button lock.

Swap out the regular mechanism for the auto, press the button and "oh snap!" 😄
 
As stated a pm2 sounds really good for him, a Benchmade 940 is a really great knife as well it’s not all murdery looking in public and is a dream in the pocket maybe one in magnacut!

Just went to look up the 940's and what rock have I been under that the 9400 exists as a button release auto????? Even I want one of those!!!! That's going on the list for sure.

The 940’s are great knives and the smaller version 945 is great as well. I have both and carry the 945 more. I have the carbon fiber versions of the 940 and Bugout and both are favorites.

The Spyderco PM2 is my all time favorite folder. Easily opened and closed with gloves on and I think the compression lock on the spine satisfies the need to get fingers out of the way. I have several versions of it and although my favorite is the Crucarta, for someone who is harder on knives I’d probably recommend the Magnacut Salt version. I have the all black version and it is my second favorite PM2.
 
The Bugout or Bailout with Rockscale Design titanium scales becomes a whole different knife. Any knife with their scales is greatly improved. AWT aluminum scales are a close second.

Added to the list of possibles. I do favor that idea. I wonder if he would like the all black version. Or if it's too late to maybe get one of the BladeHQ fish scale jade G10 models.

I have a Benchmade Griptillian with AWT aluminum scales so I know what you mean. That is a whole different knife now. If BM knew what they were doing they would buy a whole lot of them and sell them ready made. I'll have to look into the Rockscale Design as I've not heard of them. I wasn't impressed with the fit/finish with Flytanium.
