Knife recommendation for a retiring friend

The Firetac is one of the most underrated folders in existence. The PM2 and 940/945 are both pretty thin at the tip which might not be the best if he’s hard on knives.

For a gift, I’d personally stick with American made but that’s me. Then I’d take his preferences/needs into account and go from there.

I had not thought about that at all. That's exactly the kind of input I need. I DON"T LIKE HEARING IT. But I need it. (Not about my precious Spyderco babies)

I would have thought the 940 tip is pretty robust since it's a little thick behind the edge plus having the reverse tanto sort of tip? Am I wrong in thinking this???

That would be between the OG 940 with the green aluminum scales and S30V blade or the 940-1 with the carbon fiber and S90V blade.

Looking at the Adamas both full and mini. Anyone carry one? Looks like a pocket chunk. Am I wrong? Love the higher HRC they list their Cru-Wear. Wish they did that with their MagnaCut and M390.

The very tippy tip of the 940/945 is a little delicate. Not quite so much as the PM2 but I’ve seen a good many of them with a hog nose. I have the carbon fiber/S90V version of the 940 and the green aluminum 945. I carry the 945 more because I generally prefer smaller knives outside of the PM2.

I don’t own an Adamas but that’s only because it’s fairly redundant with several other knives I own. I’ve handled a bunch of them and know several people that carry them and love them. I really like the feel of them too. They are a bit tankish but with what you described of your friend it probably fits the bill best in my mind. Plus I like the steel options in the Adamas for the type of use you described better. Something like S90V would probably be too chippy.
 
I really don't think of Spyderco knives as being a great choice for a hard use knife. They're great for what they are, which is for cutting things and making you scared of that amazing point. But that same point has been known to break. Were it me, I'd be giving him a box stock green 940. There's as much blade in a very easy carry package as you will find anywhere. And the axis lock just cannot be beat for ease of use with super solid lockup.
 
Check out what Defiant7 has to offer. They do mostly button locks folders and fixed blades. There are a couple of frame locks in the mix, as well.

Now the Adamas is moving to the top of the list. I have seen a video where someone complained the only thing that ever went wrong with their 940 is the very tip chipped off. How odd.

Per above I'm moving the 940 down and the Adamas up. I will likely carry my 940 a few times to see what he says about it. If he gets really attached I won't rule it out.

I've bought a couple of Spartan knives in the last year and this model still slipped right by me. It does check mark all the right boxes. Adding to the list.

There are some manual button locks as well. Might be oos at D7, but their dealers have some.
 
Probably going with the Adamas in CruWear since it seems the most bomb proof and it's finger safe. The CruWear is coated to eliminate worry of rust. Not keen on him having to mail it back but it does have the warranty. No delicate tip. Great HRC. It's not fancy but he's not a fancy guy. This may be as close to perfect as I'm likely to get.

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I even managed to learn about a few new brands and makers.
