Knife recommendation for Utah Work Crew

My first thought was Buck 110, as far as one hand opening, add a thumb stud. Anybody who carries a 110 for any amount of time will figure out how to open it one handed anyway.

I'd grab the blade between my thumb and forefinger and flick down. The weight of the handle would pull it open and lock it into place. Mine was well broken in though; I don't know if it would work with a new knife with a stiff spring...

As far as the quick draw sheaths, they are a felony in some places.

Never heard of that (wouldn't put it past someplace like NYC), but it goes without saying: know your local laws.

You won’t ruin it, easy way to brink edge back to real sharp is the green dmt diafold!
I know... I tend to strip it a lot to avoid taking off too much metal, and that works for me.
I take a vested fixed blade to work with me now though. (Hardware store)

While I'm a really big ZT fan, the budget is not really there. But I'm going to go out on a limb, and suggest one the I seldom carry, and one that I would never have guessed I'd ever recommend. But for some reason it just seems to be the perfect blade.

The Spyder PM2 seems to work in a bunch of situations. I like the knife, but because it seems to be pushed into scenario's from its trendy status, and not only because it's the best for the job.

But I can't shake the gut feeling that the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter would be the perfect blade for the descriptions I read. I have never really been a fan of Cold Steel, but not for any of the right reasons. Then a kind soul from here on the forum sent me an Ultimate Hunter, in the new CTS-XHP version no less. I'll be honest, I was blown away. Not only is it rock solid, but super comfortable. I don't carry it much, because it's a bit pocket bulky for my average daily, home to office to home schedule. And a bit fat for how I like to carry usually. But when outdoors, it's easy to plan around and/or make consessions for. But must admit, even with many, many knives to choose from (well now anyway), in the outdoor scenario as described, I would pick the CS Ultimate Hunter every time. Crazy. If anyone were to show this text to me a few years ago, I would not have believed it. And told you you're nuts!

So now I say.......GO NUTS!!! ;)

I would throw fixed mora to your backpack just in case (emergency) and not show it to anyone, because you don't need to apologize to anyone for being prepared.

You'll be wearing gloves a lot right? If so think your best bet is a Spyderco.
I would go PM2 or manix2.

Yeah I know, but for a bombproof inexpensive beater knife that will do everything he wants it to do I think it cannot be beat and one handed opening is overrated in my opinion.

I keep a buck 110 in my drawer, but the 537 has replace it in my edc rotation.

Screw that, I’d be taking a 6-8” fixed blade with me!

Hey folks,
I'm going to be in a conservation work crew in Utah this summer for about 12 weeks. I will mainly be doing trail maintenance, construction, and invasive species removal in the backcountry.

I'm looking for a folding knife to carry in my pocket, as fixed blades are banned. The blade should be at least 3.25 inches and the locking system robust. It should also be able to be opened quickly with one hand and provide a good grip. Bonus points if it is made in America!

Hoping that you guys could help me. Thanks!

I am working under a USA Conservation that is part of Americorp (ages 18-25). All the tools we will need for the job will be provided. This means axes, hatchets, saws, shovels, pulaskis, etc. The pocket knife would be for my own use. The work is physically demanding and will be in the mountain west region of Utah, which is forested. I will be working 8 day shifts in the backcountry and will have 3-6 days off. It will be very physically demanding.

Danke42 gave great advice about the nature of the work and I've decided that I'm going to bring my PM2 and Leather man.

The welcome packet they sent me has a list of required gear so I'm focusing on that right now, if you guys have any good recommendations for logger's boots that would be great.

Wait a minute, now I’m confused. Is this the same person??? What are the odds of two people going on the same Americorps work trip in Utah with years-old BF accounts posting in this same thread? Friends maybe??? Multiple accounts?

ETA - Both users admit to being left-handed... O_o

Hmm that's strange- the flash6605 is a very old account that I must've accidentally logged into to reply to. Sorry for the confusion.
