How are you going to change your knife buying practices in 2010,if they need changing?

Here's mine....

1.No more "impulse buys" for me.I'm going to dig up as much info & pics as possible, before I buy from now on.I'm so tired of "buying into the hype" about a certain model, only to get it in my hand & wind up hating it.Then trying to sell it at a huge discount & losing money.

2.No more plastic/FRN/Zytel/etc.handles for me.Aluminum & SS is OK,but Ti &/or G10/micarta is what I'll be looking for.

3.2010 is going to be the year I delve into the custom knife world. This means I'll be buying less knives, but higher quality(instead of 1 or 2 a month, maybe 1 every 3-4 months).I'll still buy the occasional production knife if it really speaks to me though(Ti/G10/M4 Military comes to mind :)).

4.Cash ONLY for knives.NO MORE CREDIT!!!!

Also,I'm completely done with Case's stainless. If they don't have it in damascus or CV,I ain't buying it.

That's all I can think of right now.I'll probably add more later.

So,what about you?

I would like to buy some custom knives in 2010, I have a lot of knives but they are all production knives.

I too will not be doing anymore "impulse" knife buying, I also have bought some "hype" knives and ended up hating them.

Another plan is to buy some fixed blade knives as I only own one, a RAT RC-3, so I will be buying some fixed blade knives in 2010.

Do you own any customs now? Be warned; once you get your first one, you will become hopelessly addicted.

No,no high end custom folders that is.I do have a couple of custom fixed blades though.

This year, will be strictly cash for my knives. When I have the cash, then and only then do I order the knife. This should keep me from impulse buying, I hope. :D

I need to use the 3 dozen knives I have

No impulse buys (I need to adhere to that)

More research on customs. I have bought a few I could do without because they looked cool. More research and pondering are required.

:thumbup:Good one!

I just added that to my list.

I already hear the typical addicts rationalizations: "well. I'll only get a few of a certain kind . . ."

Poor lad. Remember; you have been warned, so you have noone to blame but yourself!

Have a good time.

I agree with most of your resolutions. I'm going to stop buying for a while as I currently have 10-12 projects ongoing with Krein, Weiland, and DDR. My number one resolution this new year is to make my own custom fixed blade.

And buy a Microtech Halo5 ;)

I'm going to stop the impulse buys and stick with the knives I enjoy using /collecting. I want to focus more on traditional patterns , but still want one or two higher end modern knives ( CRK or Strider)

My only resolution this year is that I am getting an XM-18 Flipper , come hell or high water.

If I only got a year and half left before that Mayan calender thing , I'm goin out with a great knife in my pocket ! :D

tostig

1) No more than 12 knives. (this does not count ones that I ordered this year )
2) User's only
3) Good quality knives only
4) More Spyderco
5) Minimum blade steel Sandvik 13C26 / 14C28N or compareable in stainless steels. I won't buy blades made softer steel than that. Just those or better like VG-10, ZDP-189, S30V and so forth I am done with soft steels like AUS4 and compearable crap.
6) Get Finally that gold membership for this forum
7) Learn stropping knives properly

I'm simply going to try to buy less for a while. I have been on an orgy of knife spending, buying in the past several weeks 4 Busses, 3 Schrades, 2 Spydies, along with various Maxpedition products, Goinggear toys and other stuff. Need to reign it in for a while, I think.

I need to stop buying and start building a cabinet for them. I also need to finish my re handle projects on axes and fixed blades that I am working on, well in my mind at least. If I buy, it will be pre 70s vintage slipjoints. I have a new found love of those. However, I will keep it toned down.

Mine would be to buy less lower-quality knives like knives from the Byrd line, which are fantastic but i still get more enjoyment from a high end Spyderco, Benchmade etc.

Then I would also have to work on the impulse buys, because I always get kind of dissapointed when not thinking alot about a purchase and getting something different than I actually wanted to buy.

im gonna focus my cash on more knife care stuff than buying more knives, ive got enough blades right now for my needs, unless i can get my hands on the new Ti/M4 millie, then im gonna buy it...:D
