knife sharpener suggestion.

Mike,
I tried to use the sharpmarker. I think 1) i coudnt feel the bevel 2) keep it consistant. 3) just plain didnt like it. I lot of time i ended up just laying the sticks back in the base and using like a stone. Its probably just me , but keeping a blade vertical to a sick at an angle for X number of strokes on each side -- dunno ... just didnt work for me. It would have been cheaper if it had ....

I have used the spyderco sharpmaker for over 15 years. I can sharpen just about anything with it. I have even sharpened machetes on it. That wasn't easy, but it worked. I discovered the accusharp sharpeners which work great on machetes, axes, and tools. They work great, but I don't use them on any of my other knives.

If you're just a klutz and can't keep a consistent angle if your life depends on it, you should get a system that restricts the sharpening to a specific angle. Edge pro is the most sophisticated and expensive of them. If you want a cheaper and more portable system, there are DMT Aligner and Lansky.

I got a DMT Aligner set because sometimes I need to reprofile knives made of super steels, and I can't justify Edge Pro price. It's stupidly easy and it gives me edges sharp enough for most purposes. However, if you want to actually shave with it, you'll need to go free hand and strop it. I strop mine just because I'm anal retentive, but truthfully there's little need to do it because I don't shave with my pocket knives.

+1 on the DMT aligner. It makes life so much simpler. Hit it with the DMT then give it a quick stropping and you're in business.

For most touch ups I use Lansky Deluxe turn box crock sticks. It works like a Sharpmaker but is smaller and less expensive. I have a Sharpmaker also but I find myself reaching for the Lansky turn box more often.

The Lansky turn box is an excellent setup. Not as versatile as the Sharpmaker, but cheaper.
