Knife Shields

very interesting. I saved the site and may just have to make one but I dont think the bow and drill method is needed nowadays. Cool tool if upgraded to fit in a drill press. Does it need reversed to cut too?

Bruce I have asked a couple well known makers how this thing works. I have yet to find out. I sure wish someone would come along and explain this parson gadget . I was told you can inlay a shield in about 10 seconds.

At the Wilfred Works :) we have hardened parser plates (templates) that aids in cutting a precise recess for each type of shield. Obviously the shield needs to fit precisely in the parser plate with NO GAPS or the gaps would be transfered to the handle when you cut the recess.

We use a 1/32" end mill to cut the recess. 1/16" will work but only for shields that have bigger radiuses at corners. This shield was installed using a matching parser plate and a 1/32" end mill.

A parser plate is really only needed for smooth handle materials such as the Micarta above, MOP, ivory, and similar materials. Stag and jigged bone is ok to do by hand due to it being more forgiving.

Build the matching parser plates....and they will come. :D

How about a kit? a dozen sheilds and a hardened plate for twelve bucks. And maybe the outside of the plate is tha same size for all the patterns and there is a cool fixture that all the plates will fit in interchangeabley so that it is somewhat easy to set everything up in a mill vise. Yea that's the ticket.

Great idea! I'm working on the plates. We'll see what happens.

Wow this is good stuff. Im all for the kit idea. Have you looked into the larger ones for bowies?

Bruce, lead me in the right direction. I need pics as to what you would like. I will look at any custom ideas.

Not sure if it's any help, but there are quite a few original bowies with handle shields/escutcheons on this page if any of you would like some examples. Note that many of the thumbnails show the back side of the knife, and if you click on the picture/link you can see the shield on the other side.

I can change the size of any design easily to fit whatever a person needs. The bigger, the easier it is to cut and the more detailed I can get. Thanks Possum for the link. Sent you an e-mail by the way.

The book "The Bowie Knife" Unsheathing an American Legend by Norm Flayderman has many examples of shields mostly from Sheffield cutlers. I should just contact you personally because I'm likely to be one a just a few that make the English Bowies and you dont need to go to all the trouble to make a variety just to have them sit. But check out this book anyway.

Back to the Parser Tool. If someone were to make this tool""what would the spread of the cutting points need to be? In other words, the distance between the 2 cutting tips. Also, what would the overall length need to be?

Have you thought of letters and numbers as well? Monogramed knife handles
might be cool, maybe a selling point. I have had one guy ask me about this very thing.
(There are so many fonts out there it might get complicated)

I could do that. I've got over 400 styles of fonts to choose from. That would get confusing:confused:

Good question. There looks to be 3 different ones pictured and look like slightly different sizes as well. I think they just need to be sized to the template so the cutter tips will fit into the small resesses in the corners. They need to be spread to add some springiness providing pressure on the cutters as they go around. I believe forward and reversing would be better than one direction as it will get into right and left corners. They say it only takes "seconds" to make a perfect hole.

I have never been able to picture how that contraption works.

Heres a design by special request for breast cancer awareness. The size will be 5/16" x 21/32".

Well you said make plates so I did. These are .125" ATS-34. They are 1" x 3". Shields fit like a glove. So I would say the "kit" thing is a good possibility. Also at the bottom you will see some new designs. Texas Star, Texas, Canadian Maple Leaf, another style of Badge and the Ribbon.
