Knife Sleeve

There's another guy that makes them for a pretty reasonable price. He used to show up on the site every now and again. He's at Back Room Leather or R G Leather or something like that these days. He also makes a buckaroo pouch that is pretty nice. It's basically a leather pouch with a strap that loops over your belt. The pouch keep the knife upright in the pocket and you just lift it out with the strap. Pretty slick.

I carry my Case Swayback in a leather slip case made for an Al Mar. It still has scuffs and scratches, but I carry my Izula in the same pocket and don't want MAJOR dings in the bolster.

If I had a "real" Tony Bose knife, I would under no circumstances carry it in a girly knife purse. I'd just carry it in a pocket with nothing else in it. Since Tony has explicitly said that he doesn't want his knives carried in a purse, to do so would be disrepectful. For the record, I've never carried any of his collaborations in a purse either. Or even any of the regular production knives he's designed, now that I think of it.

However, I did carry my Tribal Spear in a pouch on a belt. ONCE. It wasn't a "fanny pack" per se, but similar, and would probably have been declared "girly" if Mr. Bose had seen it. The pack broke and I lost the knife. The first and only time I carried the thing in that manner. Such is the power of Tony Bose. I consider myself appropriately chastened.

I guess somewhere I misread the explicit statement from Mr. Bose that they should not be carried this way, under that sentiment I guess I would not carry a bose knife in a sleeve out of respect for His wishes for his knives...

I have a couple of pocket sheaths which I occasionally use. Like Trand, I more often use them to keep a knife oriented in my pocket the way I want, rather than to protect the knife. I usually carry a nice pocket knife by itself in my pocket. I have a couple of very large knives for which I've been thinking about having belt sheaths made. Even with a pocket sheath, they are just too big to carry well in the pocket.

To get back to the original question, IIRC AG Russell carries some pocket sheaths. And there is nothing wrong with using one.

You mean a girly knife purse? :p Yes, other companies make them. Case makes a nice little suede pouch, and Sharpshooter makes a bunch of different ones. Sharpshooter makes the nice slip case that comes with the Scagel/GEC Fruitports.

By far the nicest slip I have ever received. There is no way I am tossing Elephant Ivory into my pocket to get 'character'. It has enough without scratching it up.

Plus, if you felt so inclined you could use the leather as a mini strop.

Here's a pic I posted a while ago of the large size suede "purses" offered by Case - and what knives do and don't fit. They are very nice for the money - around $2 each if I remember correctly. That being said, I don't use them. Every knife I own that I would be afraid of getting scratched/dinged has a twin. I carry and use the knives I like, and have peace of mind that if anything happens to it - I have another one waiting in pristine condition. I really need to get around to making a display or something.

Does any one besides GEC have knife sleeves for sale?

If you're looking for places to buy, it'd be best to ask for responses via email or PM. That way we don't end up with vendor links in the thread, which is against the forum rules.

Thanks

Sorry, my intent wasn't to get vendor links, just more to start the discussion as to who has what and which are best. I will be more careful with my post in the future.

If I spent $1000 or more on a knife, I'd damn well carry it whichever way I liked, regardless of the maker's feelings on the matter.

I had a local gentleman make me some just to see what the fuss was about.
Didn't pay extra for "pretty" and they are much thicker than any I have seen.

Not a fan, but I can understand the need on a premium "pocket candy" type knife.
I didn't sell them, just threw them in my box of goodies for customers.

Yep - it's all well and good for Tony to browbeat his customers (however much it's ostensibly in jest) with the notion that it's somehow "girly :barf:" to respect and protect their multi-thousand dollar custom knife with a sheath--oops, that's "purse:" have you no testicles, sir?--but IMO, it's downright spineless to allow someone's posturing to influence your own better judgement. I'll never understand how banging-up a rare and expensive handmade work of art, however functional it might be, has become a badge of honer in some circles. By the same token, why aren't Porsche and Ferrari (etc.) drivers scratching up their paint while playing slalom with the streetlights? After all, they're only driving users. ;)

I'm a big fan of the William Henry clip case, not much for the protection it provides, since I never carry anything in the same pocket with my knife, but because it keeps the knife instantly accessible, and more importantly, it avoids having it lying horizontally at the bottom of my pocket like so much ballast, which I think looks and especially feels awful.

I have several of them. I get mine from Backroom Leather. He offers several sizes and leathers.

Make your own. Get a 4 x 8 strip of leather from Hobby Lobby or similar, cut to the length you need. Fold it over suede side in, sew the edges in an "L"-shape and you have a great little pocket sheath. Like others, I use mine to keep longer knives oriented correctly (aka vertically) and it also helps to keep the knife in your pocket, rather than having it slide out in the car, etc. This is especially useful when wearing slacks.

I don't carry my Bose WT in a purse. It ruins the "talisman" feel in my pocket. When I reach in there, I want to feel and fondle an exquisitely made knife!! :D

I'd slalom my Ferrari too, if I could afford one! :(

I've always suspected that you are a wildman, Charlie! ;)

I'll have to tell my grand-daughters you said that, Gary!
They just think I'm a nice old Grandpaw!

I don't use one, But each to there own. But nothing feels
better than a well made pocket knife in your pocket and
reaching in your pocket and pulling it out and go to work....imho.

I bet he will drop by and weigh in on the subject. This topic comes up now and then and he usually sets people straight

Hmm I didn't realize this was a subject of debate for our community, I've gotten good points from both sides of the argument. Honestly leaning toward the no knife sleeve side for the sole purpose that I don't own anything more expensive that than a Damascus pocket hunter or the Chestnut SBJ, and I agree with the sentiment that being able to reach in your pocket and feel the knife there is a nice thing.....

I still think I would want to better protect any custom knife I had purchased though. i think the cheapest custom I've seen (and liked) has been in the 400 range and (while that is out of the question right now) I would want that protected as much as possible while still being used and carried.
