Knife storage

I had always though of blueprint file cabinets.
You can get them 36" deep, 60" wide, and 2" deep with mutiple (10-12)
pull out drawers
Just a thought

Keeping my small collection in the gunsafe for now but I'm going to have to think of something soon also because I went on a shopping spree and several guns are coming to fill the space. ------------ Some more sick pictures Trevor--always enjoy seeing glimpses of the porfolio.

Ask skunk, his "room" is amazing.

I've seen it, well thought out.

1st thing I thought when I read your post...I've seen Skunks Drawers, they didn't contain much! :o
But his vault was amazing!
Funny thing is after seeing his vault I can't find some of my knifes.

Hey Stinker, can I come back out there next Spring and hit a raft ride with you?

Security will not be a problem as this will be a true vault room complete with huge safe door. I want it to look good but just "MAN" good. Doesn't have to impress the wife cause she could really care less about my man cave area. I like the idea of drawers to store knives but it doesn't have the Holy Crap factor when the door swings open. If I could get past my hatred of peg board that would probably work well. Then I could have wall of knives that could be ever evolving to make room for new knives. I just hate the look of peg board. I guess the quest continues. Honestly I am having fun just coming up with ideas and seeing what others have come up with. If I figure something out I will be sure to let everyone know.

Garth, just be sure to leave enough room for a small refer, recliners, wall space for the plasma oh and leave a slot cut in the wall for when the wife sends you to your room you can at least get a tray with food pushed through:D!!!

Since I stopped playing billiards at any regular pace, I covered the table and use it to store Busses. I won't run out of space for probably another year. Simple wall-hanging and/or the tool chest solution appeals to me as the next step. No kids to worry about.

I have absolutely zero talent when it comes to design/decor, so this may be a cheesy/kitsch idea but a good artist can hide the look of the peg board by painting it to look like a wood finish, or any color and design that will show off the knives well, maybe logos of each of the Bussekin companies. Combine that with good lighting effects and I think you could come up with something versatile that won't look like like peg-board and won't break the bank either.

I would love to see some nice wall displays for my "man cave". Something a little nicer than hanging them on a nail. I have been working on a design that has simple to build birch plywood framed in with Black Walnut trim (sanded and polyurethane). Open front so you can just gab your knife off the wall. Each knife will stand vertical looking at the thin profile from the back/spine of the knife. The butt of the knife will sit on a 2 inch shelf and the blade will fit in a thin mitered groove. A small piece of thin elastic attached on both sides of the frame will hold the knives solidly in place.

I have done something very similar with a ping pong table.

One idea: Get some of those drawers (blueprint/map, awesome idea guys!) for the bulk of the collection, then choose which ones you want to display. I would go with groupings of models or styles or some other unifying feature (i don't really know what your setup or collection look like). When I knew which knives to display I would pick some to go on the wall and some for the "table-top." Wall display:Nice hard wood 12"(ish) by 36"-48"(ish)(based on size of blades) stained to match and hung vertically; pins mounted at appropriate distances to hang each blade by talon hole and lanyard hole, blade up at a 35-60 degree angle (based on personal pref, even horizontally). For "table top" display: (I think larger blades would look cool) Nice piece of wood, at front on one side mill out a groove to fit a blade with a support at handle, then slightly behind and moved in centerline, a shorter groove and a taller handle prop so blade sits in groove and handle is above the one in front, next one over and back and higher, and so forth, center knife will be vertical, then one the opposite side progressing down, a rising and setting of blades as it were. They would be handy for fondling but displayed in some sort of order ( as opposed to "tossed in a drawer/box"). As long as the pins are long enough the talon/ lanyard holes should support the blade enough for display. Smaller blades in the "tabletop" method might not be so heavy that they need handle support if you put the blade in deep enough. I will try to draw something out and snap a pic of it to try and make it a little clearer..

I just got a 24"x18" wood display case with felt padding and a glass front panel. I like it :) certainly not enough to hold any real hog's collection. I'm just keeping my safe queens in there. The users go on some paracord loops on some wall hooks.

Perhaps I'll get a picture up later, but it's reflective and it shows the daylight, mess in my room, etc... I'll wait for it to get darker.

Mine is a little less elaborate than the rest so far.....they say life is like a box of....

Vaults are something I have looked at as I have three large gun cabinets which are full ... and I want to move towards obtaining a Sec 5 Dealers license over here so I can look towards dealing with our Police and Military. My experience from asking around the gun trade is that a vault room suffers very badly with lack of air circulation and the need for a dehumidifying system. All of which increases general cost for overheads like electricity plus instalation cost ... although you can buy portable dehumidifyiers but they need regular changing out the water tank which fills up through use. The other option is avoid rust by keeping them all in wax and rapping ... but no good for display.

The best I came up with is creating a "cage" inside an unused room such as a billiard or snooker room ... akin to the old style western jails ... which allow air to circulate but still offer protection from theft. Leaving a gap round the walls to enable the heating /radiators etc to work. Or if I can get away with it just use the metal bar sections around the windows and the doorway. It will depend on consultations with the Police as to what they require.

However, whilst the walls are likely to be fitted with proper gun racks ... I anticipate some space being offered for angled shelves with lips at their base to display pistols and knives. It would need to be a bespoke "carpentary project" for these to be done but I could do a lot of it myself.

Not a cheap undertaking though .... so at present my knives reside in hidden draws under my bed originally meant for spare linen ... or otherwise scattered round the house ... no children ... but occasionally the odd "freaked out" visitor ...

I have a cousin who lost his whole collection of guns/knives to a fire. He had a bunch of safe's but even the "fireproof" one was not fireproof enough. He lives in an area where any fire department response will be to show up and watch the coals smolder, because by the time they get there, your house is pretty much gone. When the smoke cleared, and he collected the insurance money, he built his new house around a full room fire proof reinforced concrete room with a fireproof vault door. The rest of the home was built/designed around that! It has it's own fire retardant system (just H20 based, but still cool!). The fire system is gravity fed, by having a large storage water tank up hill from the home.

I just have a non fire rated safe! I need to upgrade to a bigger, fire resistant one, because I know insurance won't really replace what I have (not to mention the inherited gun from my grandpa, my custom knife made by my deceased Uncle who was a custom maker, and my older firearms )

I won't ever have the "storage" issues that some of you guys have, but I still need a better system than the safe I have now.

i keep some of mine in a duffel bag on the floor of a closet. the rest are stashed about the house.

More pics of how people display their Busses, please!

I posted a similar thread on the General Discussion forum yesterday, looking for some inspiration on how to display a few of my nicer knives. Bought a case for folders, which is OK - felt is not as shiny as the flash makes it look in this picture, but I may replace it anyway - but also want to display a couple of fancy-handled fixed blades, including a beautiful SAR8.

Garth, Here are links to a few ideas... just replace the firearms with knives.

I like this one due to the display table island in the middle of the room.

For display containers, you may want to consider slanted racks/shelves like libraries use to display periodical magazines. There are no doubt woodworkers in your area who can make you some nice display cabinets or boxes to put on the slanted shelves, as well as tricking out the rest of the room with matching fixtures. (A consequence of the current tough times is the large number of talented craftspeople in most trades looking for work.) You could line the shelves with anti-rust drawer lining available from Lowe's, Lee Valley (Veritas), etc. that have vapor corrosion inhibitors.

I concur with the idea of a concrete, fire-proof, controlled environment, fire-suppression equipped room. For the walls, I'd go rebar reinforced concrete vs concrete block, if at all possible. You have the right idea with a gun vault type door. Don't forget some battery back-up emergency lights in case the electricity drops while you are in there, so you can get out okay.

For dehumidification of a small area, check out Dri-Z-Air or the silica gel packs. For whole room drying, the aforementioned dehumidifier units come into play, including some commercial sizes from DriZAir.
