Knife storage

It's a great day when you get to see a new pic of the Chuckette that you've never seen before.

I found a pretty good deal on a rolling toolbox. It works with my small collection and allows me some room to grow. The other drawers have gun/knife cleaning supplies, paracord supplies for lanyard making and all of my non-Busse knives.

Small Busses/Bussekin (and a couple of non-Busses):

Sheaths/Holsters (Leather on the left, kydex/nylon on the right (OCD, me?)):

Take a look at slat wall. It is more expensive than peg board, but can be very good looking and if it has metal inserts in the slats it is very strong. What I have used is 4'x8'x3/4" MDF with slots routed out the length of the board every 3" or 4" the slots have metal inserts that are 4' long so the shelf/hook/bracket is bearing against the metal insert and not just the lip of MDF. Here are some references for slat wall and accessories.

That slat wall is good looking. I have not seen it before so thanks for the info. I also like their tower concept where you can display a lot of knives etc. in a very small space if you do not want to use wall space (or in addition to wall space of course).

Chuck,I am sure it would not be as big as the tower o infi that you could build with your collection. You may want to stay away from the tan board though. All your knives would blend in and we wouldn't get to see them.

Miss you bro. Hope to see you soon.

If you are dedicating a room to that I guess there are many considerations - security vs. accessibility, mobility of the collection, storage vs display, condition control e.g. dust, humidity and also the theme / decor of the room etc. If nothing satisfies you then perhaps you will require all custom.

I don't display mine but my storage considerations are:
- security
- easily organized e.g. by size, manufacturer, etc.
- versatility - storage that can accommodate new arrivals in the correct place without complete repacking
- expandability - add storage space easily as the collection expands
- any and every knife easily accessible
- eliminate any wear & tear from storage (e.g. stacking them in a pile)
- condition control e.g. dust and humidity, ability to store while oiled / lubricated
- mobility - moving subsets of the collection and the entire collection easily and quickly

So I use tool chests and Pelican cases as they meet all my requirements.

I leave open spaces every so often to accommodate the new arrivals. Shallow drawers for knives and deep drawers for sheaths, lubricants and sharpening items.

I can get to any knife I want immediately but I can also move a subset, drag the chopper chest to the chopping tree in the backyard, or grab a pelican case that goes in the hold of a plane, or load the entire collection relatively quickly onto a truck. I have other Pelican cases that are configured for road trips with knives, flashlights, batteries and other useful items.

They can be stacked and expanded, or if the collection shrinks, they can be still used to store other things like tools, etc (as opposed to custom knife specific displays).

They can be locked, can be moved or can be bolted down.

But of course none of that is decor display quality with a spouse approval rating. Better for basements, garages etc.

Here are mine:

Cool! Mind sharing what tool chest you're using in these pics?

Husky 53 in. 8 Drawer Tool Chest model #: 5308CHTHD.

I got them from Home Depot. I think they are discontinued now but I have still seen a few recently.

I chose these because they do not have wheels & handles (I do not want them too mobile but I can easily put them on a dolly), all drawers lock, I like the top opening shelf storage that spans the entire length for axes and large knives, all drawers are wide so they can all fit large knives, the top 3 rows of drawers are shallow so they optimize space for knives and the bottom row drawers are deep so they accommodate sheaths upright for easy access, optimize space and can accommodate sharpening supplies etc.

I was actually given that knife as a gift on the day I took that picture which is why it is still in the sheath. I don't know anything about throwing knives but I just ran downstairs and checked it. It is marked "Super Thrower, Stainless Steel Japan" with a tree (maybe Cedar) logo.

He also gave me a Dacor diving knife (adjacent in the picture) and a small boot-knife marked Explorer MM=IIK, Japan.

I am familiar with Dacor but given my absolute ignorance re. throwing and boot-knives, I know absolutely nothing about those 2.
