Knife testing vids: yea or nay?

I never seen one of their videos before, but I just watched DBK's new video on sharpening. And well with the file etc they were actually "sharpening" in the wrong direction. Still a fun vid to watch though.

Vids where people do non-knife things with knives? No!

Vids where people cut things and share thoughts how the knife works as tool? Yes!

They are a lot better to watch than what is on TV when my wife is in charge of the remote control!

Just my opinion, but it seems like some of the folks put a lot of time, money and effort into it (Cedric and Ada for example) and are trying to provide the community with decent science. They are of course limited by what resources they have available. Some are quite entertaining as well. Watching Nick with his Z-Hunter provided some lighthearted humor that I needed after a long hard day of work. I also learned about the knife designer Oosa, whom I would have been ignorant of without a Shabazz video.

Big fan of Advanced Knife Bro. I think the some of the genius behind his review is he simultaneously actually shows the knife being used while kinda spoofing the whole knife review video culture. And he does it with some dry comic relief. A few of his videos showing his ninja like knife moves with classical music playing in the background are just awesome.

I've never put much value in knife review videos but I do like his a lot.

Micheal Christy is the man, that’s about it in my video consumption. ApostleP is very listenable as well.

Dutch Bushcraft Knives is too loud for my tastes. They seem geared towards a younger audience. Also, they usually don't really explain anything, rendering their review useless. Most of their videos are loud comedy followed by a few numbers that are meaningless because they don't explain how they arrived at said numbers. Also, DBK gets a lot of their knives from their sponsor, so I'm not sure how objective they are. I've noticed they rarely mention any negatives unless it's clearly a gas station knife they are making fun of.

I like Nick Shabazz better. Although he doesn't do any of the testing onscreen, he does support his conclusions with arguments, explains how he arrived at his conclusions and shows a lot of things close up. This makes his reviews a lot more useful.

It would be even better if someone showed some useful tests while also explaining them at the same time. Maybe that is something for the next big youtube star of the knife community?

Nay. They are lame.

What's there to test? It's a knife. It cuts things, or at least it should. Do I really need to watch a video of this?

It makes me think of kids today that watch videos of other people playing video games... Why not just play the game yourself?

Do you watch knife testing vids? Find them useful or waste of time? Do you like a specific way some test a knife but not others?

I have never purchased a knife due to a vid, but I can say some vids influenced my choice on a knife I was already considering. I tend to like hard use vids where the person has a set number/type of tests they will use to test a knife. Some are of course more like abuse than use, but I enjoy seeing how much abuse a certain knife will withstand. That applies more to say what I'd be interested for EDC or bush craft and such vs say a kitchen knife etc., and expect the testing to be withing a logical framework for what the knife is intended for.

Feel free to post a vid you feel illustrates what you find good/bad in such vids.
:) Yea and nay ! Depends on the type of review , reviewer and purpose of the knife .

Many reviews are simply useless to me , because nothing functional is demonstrated . Unboxing , fondling , knife porn . Useless and annoying .:thumbsdown:

Especially if the knife is supposed to be a great "hard use " work knife , or camping / bushcraft / survival etc . , then I want to see the knife doing whatever they claim it can do . Preferably , a long term user review , to testify how the knife holds up and performs over extended use .:thumbsup:

Nick Shabazz is entertaining so I watch his reviews.

The others...you'd think they would know what they wanted to say before turning on the camera. My time is valuable to me.

I find them largely useless. The info I need would only come from someone who has EDCed a knife for at least a couple months, so I generally find that info here. Sometimes I just need to see a knife, then I'll watch with the sound off, as almost all of the "reviewers" are great at filling time with verbal fluff.
Lee, they are chasing views and watch time, so they have no interest in getting to the point. What they hope is that they have the newest and best first, have lots of subscribers who want to see the newest and best, and hope they can pad a folder review into 25 minutes. Its the youtube game.

Watched a few vids after learning of him in this thread. His reviews are pretty bland but he's funny, so it works. ;)

I'd watch DBK if they were reviewing sticks since the make me smile every time I watch one of their videos.

So it's not just me? Thank god! I thought I was going crazy.

When I want to laugh at a complete idiot and have nothing better to do, (very rarely), I watch a video by Nut'n'fancy. :)

I don’t care for the torture test stuff. I don’t need to know about lock strength and I don’t bushcraft so it’s just not my thing.

But since were talking about the rest I DO like Shabazz, Slicey Dicey, Dr Frunkey, Luv Them Knives, Frankie & Bird, Cedric & Ada, Advanced Knife Bro, Epic Snuggle Bunny, Eugene Kwon, Kevin Cleary, 7redi and even the occasional Nutnfancy.
I enjoy the wide range of opinions and personalities and appreciate free knife content, which generally takes a considerable amount of work to put out.

nope. not a fan of most reviews and odd testing. usually way too much talking just to hear themselves talk. lots of fidgeting with the knife for no reason. flicking open and closing knife and pawing it while talking about nothing typically.

some testing videos I dont mind, but many once again just like to hear themselves talk. I cant stand to listen to 10 or 20 minutes of non stop babbling.

short and sweet, less is more. many knife video folks fail on that.

IMO...I like Nick Shabazz, Gideonstactical & some Nutnfancy. Watching box openings stink, watching them use em in the field is boring. I like the technical aspects. The feeling in the hand, how much does the frame lockup, blade play, smoooovness, deployment...etc....etc. But I like to watch several different ones when I'm in the mood to purchase. Pretty much did that for every knife I've owned & still own. I weed out the bull sugar & fan peeps to get an average of likeabilty.
