Knife vise interest? Video added

This is NOT a sales thread, and I do not want to get in trouble for posting something inappropriate... so hopefully this is okay. :)

I sold a knife vise on the exchange that's just like the ones I use in my shop. Quite a few people have asked if I was taking orders--- which I actually had zero plans for.

It's something I'm willing to look into, but I really can't afford to go buy a whole stick of tubing and pipe, etc., for a project like that, if there's not much interest.

So I'm just curious if there would be any interest in something like this from the folks that don't have the means to build their own...???

Thanks :)

FWIW: This is what mine looks like-

For clarity here- I'm just talking about the knife vise itself (silver thing), NOT the rotating head bench vise!(blue thing) ;) :)

This video is MUCH longer than I wanted it to be... but hopefully it will clear up a lot of confusion---- :)

I'm interested in one of your hand sanding fixtures. One that can fit into a panavise receiver. To save money you could send it out with the holes drilled but not tapped. I'd be all over one of those.

I just started making and working on knives. Using a regular bench vise and am kind of worried I might damage the blades. I have a future interest in buying one of these. Can you tell me the advantage of your vise compared to a standard bench vise.

Wait...um... what? LOL

And I'm getting the feeling I need to clear this up a bit. I am NOT talking about the rotating head, multi-purpose bench vise that's in the second photo above!!! I am only talking about the giz-wiz that holds the knife by the blade, so you can work on the handle at any angle. (the silver thing ;) ).

Sorry I didn't make that clear in my OP.

Thanks! :)

I would be interested in getting one after I get my disc from Nathan.

I'd take one, Nick. I shopped them at a retailer and they just seemed overly expensive for as simple as it was. Start a thread in the exchange so we can all talk price.

I would be very interested. I remember you posting some time ago, that you use "adjustable handles" through out your shop... Would you consider either adding that to the design (so you don't need a wrench to tighten and loosen it), making it an option, or using a common nut where I could go to a place like McMaster-Carr or MSC and order one to replace the bolt? Either way, I am definatly in.

I'm interested Nick.

I would be willing to bet that you could make a lot of $$$ just selling your different fixture or possibly even plans on how to make them. I know this thread isn't about your hand sanding paddles or other sanding apparati, but I would buy them in a heartbeat.

Thanks
Eric

Keep all questions about prices in emails and PMs. Posting that you are interested is all Nick wants right now. When he has some ready for sale, he can put them up in The Exchange after contacting the guys who said they were interested. A note in his signature line can let people know these are ready, and he can post a link to the sales thread there, too.

I think Nick is doing the Shop Talk guys a favor by making a batch of his knife vises, and that is what Shop Talk is all about.

Thanks for the input guys. :)

My Dad has been pushing me to make & sell some of my shop gizmos for years, but I always argued that knife makers will just make their own gizmos. However, it did dawn on me recently that I made knives for almost 10 years before I started learning to weld. Prior to that, I had to rely on family friends that are welders to help me out.

So while a little fixture like this is ridiculously simple to somebody that does fab work... a guy without a metal cutting band-saw and a welder would have a hard time putting one together. ;)

The biggest factor in cost for these would be the steel.

Bob- it's funny you mentioned that--- if I build some of these, my plan was to use 5/8-11 adjustable locking levers for the folks that would want them enough to pay the extra cost. :)

Nick, I'd buy at least one of most of your gizmos. Even though I can make my own, my free time is better spent with my family rather than in the shop catching on fire attempting to weld. :D:D

Great, thanks Nick! Yeah, I have been thinking about buying about a dozen of those adjustable levers/ handles, as it seems like such a time saver when you add up all of the "non-value added" time spent tightening/ loosening random bolts on equipment I used all the time (oh, don't forget about the "bending over and picking up the dropped tool" time and the "oh crap, I just tightened this crescent wrench last time I used it and it is already loose" time). I am constantly adjusting my hand sanding thingy/ jig/ giz-wiz (Nick Wheeler TM), but it is becoming sloppy and I need to replace it.... great timing for a "who's interested in a hand sanding thingy/ jig/ giz-wiz"

Sorry everyone... I believe I may have officially abused the use of "" in this post

Agree, also. I can make one, but it wouldn't be as nice, and I have about 10 other shop things that I need to make. It's looking like I will now only have 9 :D

Nick, patenting isn't all that expensive. I think you should get a patent of some of your best gizmo's, and shop them around. If someone would do a small manufacturing run, I bet the supply houses would pick them up. Just a thought.

One of these is what I meant:

I was wrong about it fitting into the panavise base.

I'd love to own one of those.

Nick, out of curiosity what brand of paint are you using on those? It looks really nice and I haven't seen any good quality hammertone paint in a while.
