Knife vise interest? Video added

Grainger carries soft face adapters for about 5 different width vise jaws. See if anybody has an account there to refer to. Grainger likes having a business contact.

I'm interested in one of your hand sanding fixtures. One that can fit into a panavise receiver. To save money you could send it out with the holes drilled but not tapped. I'd be all over one of those.

I guess I should have waited a little bit... LMAO ;) Cuz I was going to reply to your quote with these shots... :) This thing does fit into a Panavise base.

Yeah man. "If you build it we will buy" (Field of Dreams voice)

Radio Shack has the Panavise on sale right now for $15.98 by the way.

Thank you guys for the input and the encouragement (we'll see if Angi is on board with these project ideas later... ;) LOL)

Ok, let's see, I'll try to answer your questions guys...

patents
- I have a couple friends that have gone through the patent process, and if it were to go anything like it went for them- I wouldn't be able to afford the attorney fees to get it rolling, nor would I be able to afford the costs of keeping up with them. I have just come to the conclusion that knife makers are (by our very nature) the type of guys to see something and then want to try and build it ourselves. That's the biggest reason I've never bothered selling any type of gadget.

paint- The stuff I use is hammered finish Rustoleum. It's pretty good paint for rattle can stuff. Powder coat would sure be nice, but it would make this type of thing go way up in cost.

the fixture
- That's just a support I made for hand sanding blades. I use it for big blades, but most of the time I find myself using a small support I made in the bench vise, because I can set it to any angle.

***forgot- The standard vise I use will hold a blade up to 1-3/4." I have a bigger one that will hold ginormous blades, up to 3-1/2" wide! LOL I am pricing stock to see what it would cost to build something that would hold a ~2-1/4" wide blade.

Will the bigger vises also hold smaller knives?

Okay, I'm kind'a slow... could you elaborate on that a little please? I'm not following just yet.

Phillip- Yes. :) I don't use the real big one that often because it's kind of klunky, but I think one of these done up with 2-1/2" tubing would be a pretty handy overall size.

Hey Nick,

I'm building some sanding supports like yours now but could really use the vise (depending on cost). I have a welder but I've been too busy to learn how to use the thing. :) I would be interested in one of your vises that would accommodate wider blades in the 2 1/4" – 2 1/2" width range as that is mainly what I make.

Marc

PS. I would also be interested in a variable speed reversible motor set-up to accept one of Nathan's discs since I just ordered a couple and have no motors for them.

Thanks guys. :)

First off, I wanted to make sure everybody understands I'm not looking to get an absolute commitment from anyone (especially without having a price calculated!), just gauging interest to see if it's something to pursue.

Secondly, what exactly is everybody talking about with the sanding rest? Are we talking about just the "dagger profile" sanding support with drill/tapped holes for support screws? One that would be clamped in a vise? Or the whole she-bang...? Meaning the universal base that bolts to the bench and accepts all the gizmos?

If anybody is thinking of the whole she-bang, I gotta say... I can't really see that being feasible. Just my expense for the plate and schedule 80 pipe would be more than half of you guys would probably want to pay for the finished product,.... LOL :) There are already a couple universal knife vises out on the market that most folks think are too expensive, and I can tell you mine would have to cost more than those do. :foot: ;)

Part of the beauty of the handle working vise that's in my OP, is that you use it with a bench vise, so it doesn't require its own real estate plot in your shop. :)

FWIW- I'm waiting on a couple other steel shops to get back to me so I can figure out what any of this stuff would cost.

Thanks guys! :)
