Knife you could rely on for survival

Guys, guys... I'm sorry you are all wrong. Clearly you want the Kukri Saw.

Either that or that crazy strap on shark knife.

Only thing I could think of that would get me into such a situation would be if I were selected to one of those TV shows like Alone or Survivor or such... where they dump you off at some unknown spot with nothing but what you brung.

In that case I'd pack this Camillus/Fisk OVB Bowie to go with me.

It carries like it's made of smoke. Takes a keen edge with little effort, and holds it plenty long. It's substantial enough to split kindling, yet nimble enough to handle smaller, more precise cutting chores.

It could easily dress and process full size game, or just as easily clean small stuff like squirrel and rabbit. It's built somewhat like a chef's knife, so there wouldn't be any problem if it were brought to bear in a food prep role.

I would hate to think of having to defend myself against any of the various beasts in the wild, but if I were forced to do so then this piece would probably give me a decent fighting chance.

I'd probably do fine with any of the knives I own, but I suspect I would appreciate this one the most.

Well I’d have my folding saw (seriously why would I not have one in the wilderness for a lengthy period of time) so I’d go with my Fällkniven HK9. Laminated 3g baby! I also carry my DC4 stone and Brommeland pocket strop so I’m good to go.

Is it an Opinel?

I had a custom knife made (by an excellent maker but not a BF member) for this specific possibility; you might wish to do the same, hopefully ending up with exactly what YOU want and need. Prior to that, it was almost always my CS Trailmaster, it never failed me.

I won't be needing it anytime soon, neither can I afford one, but who would you recommend?

I'd bring a custom fixed blade made by a knifemaker here on the forums. A little over 5 inches, very sturdy, excellent blade grind, kydex sheath, and reasonable weight. Gives me most of what I'd need from just one knife.

I would like to get a custom made one someday, but I don't know who from, there's so much talent here

What is the blade and handle material?

No, a Fällkniven HK9. It’s a micarta handled 3G lam steel knife. Super good looking and holds an edge extremely well.

Here’s a few pics of my Fällkniven HK9:

I'm terribly sorry I should have been more clear, I was referring to your folding saw when I asked if it was an Opinel :p

And that fallkniven looks very very nice

It would really depend on where I as supposed to be "surviving", and what I had to do to get "back".

I've been finding machetes quite versatile, and id want one anywhere there would be lots foliage, or things with lots of thorns nearby. They also work great as a chopper, and are easy to maintain.

Alternatively, I'd bring something entirely different if I was dropped in a desert, and/or said it have to be traveling a great distance to get back home. Something like a simple Mora, or my Becker BK16 would do nicely.

If I'm not allowed to know/prepare for some reason, I'd take my BK9 out of what I have. I'm comfortable with it and it's limitations. I feel I could make it work reasonably will in either situation above, and many in between.

Oh hahahaha. It is the Lowe’s brand folding saw. It was $18, works great, and replacement blades are like $4!

If you knew you were about to spend a long time in the wilderness in any environment, what knife would knife would you choose to bring with you, and why?

Look at what the local Inuit or Laplanders or Amazon forest people use. They survive in their environments with butcher knives or machetes or other basic tools.

Frankly, if I am relying on one knife for homesteading (what you've described), I will take a multi tool and then the other tools I'd need like an axe and a saw. Now as for the specific multitool? With weight in mind, I'd probably take my modified leatherman wave+ (turned the can opener into a wood gauge, and I am going to make a few bits for different tasks like a reamer bit, and a chisel bit) or a victorinox spirit. You want a softer steel which can take an easier edge, 420 hc or the victorinox steel works great for that and doesn't chip, and you want something with a fine edge and point for finer detailing work, since that is the role you'd use it for, and you'd use the axe for the fire processing. The file on a multi tool can be great for maintaining other tools as well.

However, that is if you are homesteading. However I'd still take the wave for survival as well. The new Wave+ model made a few nice improvements which they didn't advertise (better edge grind and a sharpening choil on the main blade for instance). I could make most other tools I'd need with the wave (at least, with my modified wave), and you never know when you need pliers or a pair of tweezers (you can fit victorinox tweezers behind the saw of the wave!)

Mora No. 1 for the fixed blade.
A Buck 110, large Stockman (3 7/8 or larger, closed) and a 4 blade Scout knife for the folder.

Since the Buck 110, Stockman and Scout knife are my normal EDC, I would have them with me.

I would also take along a proper axe or saw, a Zippo lighter or waterproof strike anywhere matches, twine, tent, sleeping bag, etc.

Yeah, and just because the manufacturer's knives may perform like this in a controlled setting doesn't necessarily mean the one you buy from ABC online retailer will too. I saw a LOT of camera cuts in that footage and I'd be willing to bet they used more than one knife for all those tasks.

Show me a video where some random, average nobody either buys one out of a store or off the internet w/ no editing cuts from the time they pull it fresh out of the box until the time the last nail is pounded and board is batoned w/ no serious damage or catastrophic failure and then I might be impressed.
