So I'm going to be going on vacation to California for a couple weeks with my family. The problem is, I'm not checking any luggage, so I can't bring any knives with me! It really sucks. Any tips?

Buy a crappy one when you land, or a nice one that you have wanted for a while and then mail it back to yourself before you leave.

get a sak classic on the trip? cheap enough to throw away after everything if need be and will probably do everything you need on a vacation

Or you could even mail one to yourself so it's waiting for you when you get there.

I'm wondering how you can fit three weeks of luggage in a carry-on bag.

As far as your 'problem', just buy a pocketknife when you get there. I had a packing lapse on a recent trip out east, stopped at a Lowe's store, and bought an excellent Victorinox for $13.
If you can afford to fly to California, I don't think a measly thirteen dollars will lead to your financial ruin. :D

Buy one of those balisong pens, you can take that with you and flip it around for a quick fix.

Yeah, but what happens if he actually has to, you know, cut something? ;)

Hotel scissors? O.K,so the pen idea sucked,go with the buy one when you get there.

Where are you staying in California? I can recommend a really good place if you're near the OC. Use it as an excuse to buy yourself a knife, and when you leave just ship it back.

Buy a good one while you're there. Go up to Solvang and visit Nordic Knives. Worth the trip.

Three week trip with no checked bags? Mail one to were you are staying, I would also put some extra underwear in the package :)

Mail a knife to where you're staying or realize that not having a knife on you doesn't mean you're going to instantly die. Would it be weird not to carry a knife, yes but it's not necessary.

iirc, the leatherman style cs is TSA approved for carry on... although your mileage may vary depending on the tsa agent. you could give it a try :)

Last time I went traveling without checked bags, I went to REI after landing, bought a Victorinox MiniChamp, and mailed it home just before flying home. It's an excuse for you to pick up another knife! Alternately, you could mail a knife to yourself, but it depends if you have somewhere safe to mail it at your destination...and in my mind that's just less fun than looking for and buying a new knife.

I'm with the 'buy one when you get there' crowd. If it's a nice one, you can always mail it home before you leave and if it isn't, you can give it as a 'tip' to someone. Lol - last time I flew w/ carry-on only (to the DC area), I took my locally purchased knife with me to the airport and made friends with one of the TSA guys. I offered it to him before I got to the security bit. He said, 'you can't take that on the plane!'. I told him, 'I know - it's a gift for you. Either that or it has to get thrown away but I'd rather have you take it and use it.' I think he was touched when he figured out what I really meant. He walked with me through the line thanking me and chatting and whatnot.

Hopefully, he's used the living crap out if it. :)
