Knifemaker opinion - are the optimal hardness ranges for alloys fairly narrow?

Did you use up all of your Howard Clark 1086? You know that I still have that Post Office bin full of square stock that you scared me into not using with stories of it being "inferior? LOL The only piece of that which has been used was the chunk that i sent to Jerry Fisk for that first cancer fundraiser bwoei back ion 2007 or 2008. Stick got enough to give me a hernia when I try to move the bin, plus I still have two bundles of the 3/4 and 7/8 round, one of the 1 inch and like four of those 1 7/8 bars. ;)
Yes it is & just about the only mono steel I use any more. :)

I still have a fair bit of the Howard Clark steel. It's the "other" mono steel I will use. ;)

Use some of that square stock and see how it acts.

Any opinions on 1084 as a hidden gem? The specs on Aldo's site include chrome, silicon, nickel, copper, aluminum, molybdenum, tungsten, tin and vanadium.

Those are tramp/trace elements most likely. Steel is one of the most recycled materials around. They show up sometimes.

1084 is an excellent steel. With more advanced setups, many steels can do a notable bit better than 1084. 1084 is the best generalist out there. Other steels make better specialists.

Very nice stuff. Can me made to take a scary sharp edge even when using rudimentary methods as long as you take care. A better "beginner steel" in the opinion many than 5160. It is my go to steel for damascus, but I have made a few monosteel blades fro it with nice results.
