I grind the final edge with 120-220 grit and then polish with a loaded paper wheel.

I use a 220 grit belt to take the knife down to an actual edge (this is assuming it's a knife I just finished and haven't sharpened yet). Then I use stones to take it to really sharp, then polish it up with a leather strop. Works great for me at least.

you cant beat the paper wheels. been using them for 20 years and i'll never go back to anything else.

I use the grinder and leather to finish my edges on my knives. I get my edges down to about .010" to .015" then start my final edge using a 220 grit ceramic belt. After I raise a burr I switch to a 400 grit SC belt, raise a burr again, switch to an 800 grit SC belt, raise a burr, then strop on an old leather belt with polishing compound. Hair pops.

I've accumulated some good stones over the last few years, but when it comes to finishing an edge I still use an old black Arkansas stone I've had for over twenty years. I wish it were larger, but I haven't found anything that does a hair popping edge quite like it.

I work up to an 800 grit belt and finish on a leather strop.

I establish the edge on a 120 grit belt, then hand sharpen with 220 and 600 diamond stones, then a poplar wood strop with green chrome compound.

Has anyone tried Fred Rowe's Bubble Jig technique ? Could I use that to put the primary edge on then switch to a 2x42 leather belt with a tiny bit of green buff? Or use a leather strop instead? I have a 800 and 4000 stone which I bought as sharpening knives was the first thing that got me into the knife world. I still am horrible freehand but can get shaving sharp with a Lansky diamond set and a leather strop but would like to try to do it with the craftsman.

go read this post by stevenkelby. you'll find it interesting and will probably make you forget the stones. i used to sharpen by hand until my buddy art summers turned me onto the wheels. now i'll never go back to hand sharpening unless they no longer have electricity :D http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9207988&postcount=710

I read most of this thread and will be using paper wheels when I get around to the local store to pick them up. I was debating back and forth and this is the answer!

woodcraft is the store to get them at or order them through grizzly imports. i have bought cheaper wheels which were a waste of money since they wore out. the first set i have is still going strong while the cheap set is history.

I rub mine with rare river sand for hours.

OK not really... I take them up to 400 with my regular belts then go to a 800 cork belt w/green chrome and finally a leather 2x72 belt with pink scratchless.

I use a 1x42 belt on the slack in 220 then 600 then green chrome on a leather power strop. I get hair popping results from this.

Well I do plan to get the paper wheels... once I figure out how to remove the 6inch guard from my grinder. But for now I put on the main bevel at 120, burr raise with 220, and then finish off with stones followed by stropping on leather with green compound
