KnifeMaker... What do you use to finish your edge??

I use a 220 belt to set the edge then go to 200 grit stone 400 grit stone 600 stone 800 stone and 1000 grit stone.( I use a wicked edge sharpener)Then I go to a hard cotton wheel on the buffer loaded with white rouge. Over the years my wheel has become so loaded with rouge it's hard as any paper wheel

Maybe i will be the first one to say that I use a spyderco triangle sharpener to put on the final edge. I went to about 320 on my belt sander on my last one but that was very rough edge and needs more finishing.

I wish I knew how or what happened, but someone sent me a message about this thread, which I received on my cell phone, but I can't find it anywhere.

At any rate, "Thank You".

Anyhoo...

Lately I've been setting my final edge with a clean A45 Gator and removing the burr/polishing the edge somewhat on the back of an old belt with a little white polishing compound. It doesn't take a lot because I grind my edges pretty thin. Sharp and crisp but not so fine or polished that the edge goes away after the first 2x4, at least with CPM-154 at 60Rc.

This is unscientific as heck but seems to be working quite well. I like the results well enough that one day I will make or buy a leather belt for the polishing step.

nothing fancy... just put a rough edge on with 220 grit belt... then go to the 800 grit king stone, 1200, and raise a burr !
- put some dmt diamond paste on a flat oak board and strop it back wards till its fine

gotta love carbon steel

sharper it is, the easier to dull it (Nathan hit it on the nail )

ps ..those diasharps are sweet

I've accumulated some good stones over the last few years, but when it comes to finishing an edge I still use an old black Arkansas stone I've had for over twenty years. I wish it were larger, but I haven't found anything that does a hair popping edge quite like it.

I use a Dan's 8 by 2 inch "black hard Arkansas" followed by a strop.

After receiving a Tormek system a while back, I've been getting better at using it for sharpening blades. I use the stone for the initial edge then turn to the leather wheel for final polishing. Alternatively, I'll use a 1 x 30, 260 grit and a loaded leather belt for re-curve blades or those with greatly upswept tips.

I do it one of two ways...

I set the edge (which is now at about a .005-.007" shoulder, beforehand) with a 15 micron 3M belt and polish with a 1 x 30 leather belt with compound.

or...

After the 15 micron, I refine it on a 8000gt Norton waterstone, 3M 1 micron lapping film and finally strop on a sheet of wet newspaper.

I have been considering buying a Wicked Edge set up for the car and shows.

Unfortunately, yes, I am serious... lol... that's funny, right there.

The clay content in newsprint makes it a great ultrafine abrasive(strop) when dampened. I lay it on a slab of granite(or my 8000 stone) and spray it with Windex.

Reality check... wood, cardboard and food aren't really going to give a crap whether I finished it on a leather belt or newspaper.... but I know there is a difference by observing the edge under magnification (400x USB port microscopes are cheap). Not something that translates well to 98% of your end users and nothing that will increase the value of your knives. It is just fun.
