Knifemakers in Michigan??

I found out today my wife doesn't like the idea of me inviting over guys I only know from Bladeforums. :( So I thought I'd invite people over for some grinding, but that's out of the question now.
You know what they say about when you ASSUME. :foot:
I wish my grinder setup was portable; I'd just bring it TO anybody who's interested. My forge is pretty portable, so that's something, but the grinder is bolted to the bench in a permanent way.

But it sounds like David wants to come up to Michigan.
Any of you other Jackson guys got the space and the spouse for a little hammer-in?:D:o

Ok guys, if theres gonna be a meeting in Jackson, I'll drive up.:)

Wow how did I miss this ? I live in grand rapids, I live with my parents so they might not be to hot on me have strangers over. I didn't realize there were so many makers in Mi.

I am not a maker, still trying though. If there is enough interest in a Michigan get together, please let me know.

Matt

Good point.....ha, get it??......one would have to be careful with a garage full of BF types with sharp objects...:D:D

Well here's an open invite....I have a 1 x 42 old Dayton, some pretty decent belts, I'm itching to learn about the grinding thing.
I also have a heated garage, I do leather work we can also spend some time on, and I would have beers.....
So if you get a case of cabin fever this winter and want to venture down Temperance way, give me a shout.

wow you do great leather work. I will consider coming out just to learn a little about leather work. I am quiting work on march 6th so don't be surprised if I contact you after then.

Edit: I replied to your email but My email has been a PITA lately so If you don't get it let me know and I will Pm you.

Well guys I know I am still a bit of a drive away for you all but I was thinking of doing some sort of hammer in this summer. If any of you folks are interested we can try to work out a time when we can all get together.

My wife is all for the idea :) we are used to strange people showing up. We live in a rural area about an hour and a half north of Cadilac. We hosted a steel smelt attempt last summer and planned on doing a few this summer. If your O.K. wth camping out we could make it a weekend affair. Any one who is interested should send me their email and I will try to work out all the details.

Just thought I would throw this out there.
Thanks

I can't believe you live in Spring Arbor. I grew up there... er here. I bet you dont live more than 3 miles away from my house. CRAZY. I live with parents too so my place is a no go but, it would be interesting to learn how to forge and see how a more experienced maker does what he does.
I never would have thought BF had makers from the same town as me.

I'd DEFINITELY make the drive up for a steel smelt!

I'm a Jackson guy and I can host. I do have the space or at least I can make the space if i declutter a bit, but I have no realistic way of working steel...and I can only plug in tools that are 110v. If we can work with that, I'll be happy to host an informal get together.

I live just south of JCC.

I have not asked the sweet wife for sure, but I am sure i can talk her into it.:D

Just give me plenty of time to pick up beforehand.:)

I thought you were going to get into doing some stock removal, Todd? Are you cutting them with files now, or just haven't gotten to it yet at all?

My forge is portable, and now that I think about it, my 1x42 grinder is portable, too. I've never tried to make a knife on it (it was a gift to me some time after I got my 2x72), but I know lots of people do....

I have done two on the disc grinder. :(It is also the last two I will do on a disc grinder. It seems like my finger pads have finally grown back from the last try.:D
That and files.

I do need a belt sander of some sort...but the cash and need have yet to collide at the right point in time.:)

So, in the meantime, I am buying blades. Of course a main reason to make knives is to show off my laminates...

Mike Cantrell came over today to show me a thing or twelve about grinding.....can't thank you enough Mike!! I hope I can retain half of what you showed me and talked about.
It was great of you for taking the time away from your family and the home project to drive over and spend the time with me.....

Thanks, Rick! It was a great time (and I sure appreciate the tips on the leather side of things, I learned a lot too). It's a blast to get out and talk knives with somebody who gives a hoot, and who isn't just humoring me. :)

Hey Todd, you out there? What's the word on Shadetree Custom Laminates Hammer-in 2009? ;)
