Knifenuts around DC unite!

There are quite a few Chesapeake Knife and Tool stores in the Baltimore/DC area. They're not great (high prices) but, I'll admit, they're better than nothing.

You guys should look into A.M.H. Cutlery. I found them accidentally at a local gun/knife show. I think it's a father/son operation that's been around for a long time. They've got lots of knives by Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, etc. The "store" is in Linthicum (about 5 miles south of Baltimore) in a small industrial park. The store is more like a small, dark room with lots of knives. They keep almost all of their stuff in cases that can easily be taken to the local gun/knife shows. I think they do alot of business at these shows. For those of you that were at the December knife show in Timonium, they were the ones with the huge seletion of production knives in the corner. There was always a big crowd around their tables. This is probably because their stuff was so much cheaper than all of the custom stuff there and, for most non-collectors (ie. the general public), a production knife is fine. Suprisingly, his prices are excellent (definitely internet competitive)! Here's his info:

P.S. No, I don't work for them.

That store in Linthicum sounds great, I had never found anything except CKT. The only thing that is good about them is that if you find a clerk who knows his knives, they're almost always more than willing to chat and show you stuff, even if you aren't buying.

I bought my BM 910 there. I know that I could have gotten it much cheaper somewhere else, but I spend nearly an hour looking at every folder that I could afford. They earned my $$$.

"A.M.H. Cutlery," huh? Sounds like a good Sunday trip.

Chesapeak Knife and Tool doesn't have as many knives as it did a few years ago, at least in the malls I go to, but they have a few reasonable ones. I compared a Benchmade Axis Lock and an EDI Genesis last week, but I think my next buy will likely be a William Henry gentleman's scalpel. (Maybe the "gentleman" part will rub off on me.)

The sales guy told me that CKT will match internet prices, up to 25% off their list price (plus $6 for the shipping fee we'd pay to order). Haven't tried it yet, but I have printed out the web page that they accept as proof of prices. It still isn't as cheap as internet ordering, but it's a matter of faith with me to buy from where I first fondle a knife. On the other hand, if I'm buying from a review, I consider the internet appropriate.

sounds like AMH Cutlery is a MUST VISIT soon.

I didn't know about that 25% thing at CKT, Walker, thanks. That brings their prices into the reasonable, but a little high, range. If I use their time, I feel an obligation to buy something. I think you did it right with your BM 910 amacks.

If they spend the time, they should get your dime.

I've done business with A.M.H. at every Timonium show I've been to and I've only missed one. His prices are very good and at the show at least he always has some suprises---out of production knives that I thought were long gone but would like to have. He also has the most extensive selection of Victorinox Swiss Army knives that I've ever seen. I'm sure quite a few of the patterns he has are not normally available in the U. S. The only problem with dealing with them at the show is the long lines in front of you! I've never been to the shop, mainly because of the limited hours 12-6 Monday thru Friday but they have told me at the show they will do mail order if you know what you want. For anyone looking for custom stuff, The Gentleman Hunter in Bethesda has customs on consignment. I've never been there but I've talked to the owner Art Harris. He is real nice guy but this is defintely an upscale operation so don't go in looking for something to whack weeds in the back yard.

so AMH cutlery and CKT are the only places around DC to get stuff?? That sucks. I didn't like CKT at Fair Oaks Mall because of their prices and I guess I was just in there with a bad person waiting on me because she was aweful. I did get about $7 off the price of the knife because is had some small scratches on it. I haven't been to AMH yet and I probably won't be able to go there because it is pretty far from me and the m-f 12-6 doesn't make it easy to get there when they are open. Is the Timonium show the closest in the future? Any smaller shows or farther away shows before December? I am kind of depressed now.

Uh, guys - I know you're all gonna think I'm a PITA, but... Do you think we should shift over to the Community Center moderated by Jim March?

Besides, it would be easier to find messages there, cause it's got a lot less threads than this general purpose forum.

Go ahead and vent if you think I'm a PITA. I've got teenage kids, and it will seem like I went home from work early!

I'll ignore Bob Irons' post.

Unocide, the Timonium show is only once a year in December. Call Rob at A.M.H. and let him know that you want to check his stuff out at a show and, want to know what shows he'll be at in the near future.

Re: the Timonium show. I rather enjoy it, and I've been going for a couple of years. If you missed Tim Morgan in the far right corner, you missed a nice guy with some nice knives for a part-time maker. It was rather fun to chew the fat with Jote Singh Khalsa as well. He's a salesman.
Let me know about any get-togethers in the MD/VA area!

My mother-in-law is named Berniece - Bernie for short - so I'm used to being ignored by Bernie! You make me feel right at home.
