Ive been on this site a couple times since I found it back in the summer and it always disappoints me that hardly anyone ever uses it. I myself have reviewed quite a few knives here and really think it could be a good resource. now I know that quite a few people use the knife review forum here or just ask for opinions but I think that this site, dedicated to reviews and only reviews could benefit lots of people if only it had a dedicated group of contributers filling its pages with knife reviews. So why hasnt this site just taken off? Are people too loyal to Bladeforums and other similar areas or does no-one know about the site? http://www.kniferating.com

I suppose it could be a potentially good site but who are the people giving reviews? I would rather read a review from somebody I know here on BF.

Rwasham, I rarely get to say thank you to the people who write reviews for the site(mainly because I don't know who does), but this seems like a rare opportunity. So with that, thank you sir!

PS-I'm actually redesigning the site to look halfway decent as we speak :-)

I did not know about kniferating.com. Thanks for the heads-up. I just copied and pasted the review I wrote on this site onto kniferating.com.

I get tired of seeing all the people rating their knives "10" for all the categories, and then in the summary they have a complaint or mention what would make the knife better. Call me a tough critic, but "10" means "perfect", or "could not be better". I am hard-pressed to rate anything a "9" and you will probably never see me rate anything a "10".

Indeed, the complete anonymity for the reviewers makes it hard to put much faith into any info gleaned from the reviews there.

Slidetechnik, I noticed that when submitting a review, you are asked for a name. Perhaps you could make an optional checkbox to display the submitters name with the review?

I think this website could become a valuable resource, though, but it would require a fair bit of effort from the community as a whole. As Gajinoz pointed out, I think people would rather read a review over here from a name they recognize than a few, at best, over there from anonymous reviewers. That said, I believe KnifeRating.com was aiming to fill a different niche in terms of reviews. Instead of single reviews from notable people, it offers up the "general consensus" from a number of people in an easy to read package, similar to what Amazon.com does. If KnifeRating.com had some 30+ reviews for popular models and 10+ for the majority of the rest, I have little doubt that it would become a go-to for a good number of people.

Personally I like the fact that I can search on this website for exactly the knife I want to hear more about. It does lead to a little skepticism as to who's writing the review but I like having all those reviews in one place instead of having to search through all the old pages here to find a review for the specific knife I want to look at.

Wow guys, thanks to all for the support and to those who wrote reviews. Hopefully it'll turn into a nice little database that we can all reference someday. I'd like to eventually include sharpeners and other stuff knife related as well, but there's only so much time in the day.

To address a few of the comments, no the reviews are not as thorough or in depth as a standard one on bladeforums with pictures and the works. It was never meant to be a replacement for anything found on BF(and good luck to anyone who tries ...this crowd would be tough to top).

As mentioned, it is just meant to be a general consensus. It sort of sidesteps the issue of "what if a single reviewer got 'the good one' or 'the bad one' or is a diehard Company X fanboy/hater etc. It is designed to average bias of that kind out.

Also, Fascion, when people submit reviews, it posts whatever name they enter. What they enter is their choice...real name or screen name.

Anyways, feedback is always welcome, good or bad! Thanks again.

I think that a dedicated site just for knife reviews is a good idea, especially with the name knifereviews.com. To show the seriousness of your site, you might want to standardize your review methodology. This would increase your sites credibility, reliability, and allow viewers the basic option of knowing what to expect. This will also save you a lot of flack unlike Noss from knifetest.com who up to today is getting battered for his site. I think it rules in the fact that he basically shows the durability of knives. I'm on the hunt for the Busse Fusion battle mistress because of the test he did.

In terms of standardization, I personlly would like to see or atleast have the option to rate 1-10, 10 being the best for different attributes. also, it has to be stated that ratings MUST be with reference to what it is designed for. For example...

Fallkniven F1 3G
designed for general use, bush craft, survival situations.
1. Weight: 9
2. Blade length: 7
3. Handle: 5
4. Ease of Sharpening: 7
5. Steel: 9
6. Over all length: 7
7. Actual field use: 10
8. Sheath: Zytel, 7
9. Edge retention: 10
10. Over all satisfaction: 10

THis is just an example. hope this helps you out.

Thanks for showing me the site. I hope it does well. I am not much for reviewing but I might add one or two.
P.S. I would like to see a similar site for flashlights.

Hey guys, to anybody who is interested, after a couple of months in the works the new site design is up!

Enjoy!

I was looking through this thread again and realized I didn't respond to this post.

I definately hear you on the desire for standardized reviews, however I fear that forcing people to comment on things they may not know about(or even providing them with the enticing looking option to do so) might lead to more misinformation than it would be worth.

What you propose would work well if it was just seasoned veterans who were allowed to write the reviews, however it is important to me to keep my site accessible and open to everyone.

I'm willing to entertain the idea though. If we can make it standard and it's explicit enough that an average person can intelligently contribute, I'll implement it.

My idea to do so is to create a universal scale upon which to grade. I'd be curious for input on how people would define the scale for build quality, ergonomics, value, and overall.

For example:

Build Quality:

10 - Superb, flawless in every respect
9 -
8 - Minor flaws, no effect on knife functionality
7 -
6 - Some flaws, some adjustment required
5 -
4 - Major flaws
3 -
2 - Major flaws, knife safety compromised
1 - Broken on arrival

Anyone have a proposed scale for overall, build quality, ergonomics, and value? Would also be curious to hear a proposed scale for ease of sharpening and edge retention.

Thanks guys and thanks again to the guys I missed who have written reviews.

I think rating the blade length is kind of subjective but In general the site seems like a good thing.

Guys, since there has been a call for more standard reviews, I'd like to try to take some subjectivity out of it and include a scale so that one persons 8 is another persons 8 and someone's 5 means the same as someone else's 5. It's hard to remove all subjectivity, but this should at least make it closer.

Here are the scales I propose. I'd love some feedback. Thanks in advance:

Overall
10 - Exceptional in all aspects
9 - Above average, all aspects
8 - Above average, many aspects
7 - Above average, some aspects
6 - Above average, few aspects
5 - Average in all aspects
4 - Below average, few aspects
3 - Below average, some aspects
2 - Below average, many aspects
1 - Below average, all aspects
0 - Poor in all aspects

Build Quality
10 - Perfect
9 - Few, minor flaws
8 - some flaws, good performance
7 - many flaws, good performance
6 - some flaws, adequate performance
5 - many flaws, adequate performance
4 - some flaws, poor performance
3 - many flaws, poor performance
2 - flaws, safety concerns
1 - Knife Unsafe
0 - Knife Broken, Unsafe

Ergonomics
10 - Exceptional comfort
9 - Feels great
8 - Feels really good
7 - Feels good
6 - Feels slightly above average
5 - Feels Average
4 - Feels slightly below average
3 - Feels bad
2 - Feels really bad
1 - Feels poor
0 - Extremely uncomfortable

Value
10 - Exceptional buy
9 - Great buy
8 - Price way too low
7 - Price moderately too low
6 - Price a little too low
5 - Priced right
4 - Price a little too high
3 - Price moderately too high
2 - Price way too high
1 - Poor buy
0 - Terrible buy
