Slide,

Its a good idea but its deeply flawed.

I'm looking at ESEE Izula ratings.

Value: 9.9 - Exceptional buy

I'm sorry, I have 2 Izulas and I love the things but they are not value knives. Its a small 1095 skeletal blade with no handles. An appropriate rating would be close to "5 - Priced right"

Without getting into an argument half the knives in the world would have to fall above 5, half the knives in the world would have to fall below. Also the statement of 'value is subjective' is not useful in terms of a review. You can either get better knives for a similar price or you cannot.

I considered adding my reviews but I simply cannot give all my knives 8+ and I don't want to mess up the averages,

Mat_890, thanks for the feedback. I think with this post you've actually pointed out the beauty of the system. By adding your thoughts, you actually do quite the contrary to "ruining" the average. I'd contend that you actually improve it.

As every element of each review is subjective, it is impossible to create a system where an 8 will always be better than a 7 by any random persons standards. Because every person views the world differently, what one audience member believes will differ from the next. It's impossible to create a perfect system that caters to such an imperfect audience.

However, it does allow you to analyze trends. If 50 people say knife X is exceptional, it's probably safe to say it's a pretty good knife, and you can read the supporting commentary to back up the claims. I understand what you are saying, in that maybe some people are shy about giving their hold grail knife a "5" for value, but statistically the percentage of people slipping the scale a little bit to make themselves feel better should be consistent from knife to knife, making the comparison still valid.

This is a great idea. I'll add it to the list.
