KnifeRating.com?

In my business this is very good info that I can use. I can share with customers and when I am getting emails all day with questions I can not only share my personal opinion but I will now inform them of kniferating.com

Thanks for the info!

Awesome! Just checked out your site TKAZ, looks good!

Slide, my respect and appreciation for spending time and effort to put all that together and dealing with the whole thing.

Anonymity is the problem. I'm sure everyone has seen all sorts of dubious products endorsed by n number of Joes and janes who got either super rich, ripped in 3 weeks, or something like that.
Considering that even Wikipedia fell a victim to biased info, e.g. when large companies went in and fixed up their product related info to remove all the negative (legitimate too) info...

It is also a known fact that large entities do pay people to register and actively participate on forums in order to "gently" push their products and agenda.
I'm not so sure knife industry has caught up on that yet, but it's internet.

Another aspect is the reviewer. Here on BF people more or less know or can find out reviewers taste, use habits etc and then judge particular review by that. I hope one the site is established and has more or less constant pool of reviewers who can be sort of used as a reference points it'll gain more trust and users.

Gator, I hear that. Once the site gains a little more traction, I do intend to take steps to dissuade that kind of action. Likely a permanent ID/password that you have to use to post a review. As of now, my eyes are the only defense, as I watch for funny business.

Once the site grows a bit, and a user based system exists, I think you are right in that there will be some recognizable, consistent reviewers which will in turn make the site more trustworthy. Perhaps once we hit the 500 review mark it will be time.

Whenever I do a review I use my BladeForum screen name so you know who it is. Great site as I told you before. And thank you for making it. I've done a few reviews already.

Awesome little site. I have a tone of knives I'll be adding reviews for.

Well, after a busy month, I've finally gotten around to adding price input into the reviews per the request of several people. Now, when you write a review, you may input the price you paid for the knife.

Eventually when enough prices are input, I'll add average prices and a "sort by price" feature.

The problem with any kind of rating sites is, that people in their excitement of new knife shoot 10/10 ratings just like that without any healthy criticism or comparison to others. That leads to the dilemma that it doesn't matter anymore if products are reviewed at all.

It is true that people get excited about new knives. Fortunately I require people to state how long they have owned the knife, so that when reading the review, you have a little perspective. :D

Slide Nice site!

I'll have to write up a couple reviews for ya.

Thank you sir.

Ouch, I forgot about this site! I submitted 2 reviews just now, and I'll have some mare later :)

Edit: 3 reviews :D

BINGO! I just love looking at reviews online where a guy raves on and on about the new folder he's had for a couple of days or a week. Man, it sure has stood the test of time, huh?

Of course it could be more or less valid I suppose if the reviewer is familiar with similar knives by the same maker just testing a new variation with slight differences, but that's not really what we're talking about.

Slide>Just went to post some reviews of Chris Reeves Knives, but you dont have any one pieces or green beret in the dropdown menu.

Well, I added the green berets and a few others. I don't have much info on the one pieces though as they have been disco'd.

Thanks to the OP for bringing this up. I found the Knife Rating site earlier this year and have been wondering why there's so little info on it...the makings are there for some really good reviews of our knives.

Maybe with this posting on BF we'll get some more attention focused on the site...more reviews please! :)

Slide,

Its a good idea but its deeply flawed.

I'm looking at ESEE Izula ratings.

Value: 9.9 - Exceptional buy

I'm sorry, I have 2 Izulas and I love the things but they are not value knives. Its a small 1095 skeletal blade with no handles. An appropriate rating would be close to "5 - Priced right"

Without getting into an argument half the knives in the world would have to fall above 5, half the knives in the world would have to fall below. Also the statement of 'value is subjective' is not useful in terms of a review. You can either get better knives for a similar price or you cannot.

I considered adding my reviews but I simply cannot give all my knives 8+ and I don't want to mess up the averages,

I'm just curious but how much do you think an Izula should cost? They can be had for under 40 bucks and come with a decent sheath. While I don't think it should get a near perfect score for price, it is a good knife at a fair price. There are a few better deals in the knife world but I would think it should get around an 8. Many people love the Izula and when you can get something you like that uses good materials at a price that is about half of the cost of a similar knife it is a good value.

The numbers can give you a feel for how a person feels about the knife, but you really need to read what is said about it to put the number into perspective. Nothing is perfect and when the quantity of reviews grows it should be a good resource.

I forgot about the site so I'm going to go submit some reviews right now.

I agree, its a good knife at a fair price, but anything higher then 6-7 would suggest its a good knife at a GREAT price. For something to be 9.9 it needs to be free. 1095 is a good steel but not a great steel. Either way its a VERY 'inexpensive' steel. I love the Izula but if someone said they only have between 40 and 50 dollars to spend (55-70 with handles) I would not direct them to the Izula

Moras for example I would say are a great value deserving 7-9

Saying a knife is a average value is not a bad thing and it does not represent a bad knife, its just the reality of a sliding rating system. Thats the flaw I'm trying to point out, most people see a rating of anything less then 8/10 as somehow bad.

Maybe change to a 1 out of 3 rating system. Below, average, above. Simple and might eliminate the extreme scores.
