All kinds of good stuff going on here!

I have to check that turntable, I really need to get mine going again as I have tons of vinyl.

Nice score on the ring, looks like Peridot at a glance... light green might be Peridot and yellow maybe Citirine. Cool!

Sloth357 I like it! I'd like to use the fricky platform for a few knives.

Farchyld I like the idea! I have some grinding tips for the ht'd knives... will talk to you later on that. :D

I'm just in and kind if itchy... been working on these Pocket Fighters all day! Grinding... more grinding, signing, cleanup, hand sanding, way more hand sanding, cutting scales, drilling, chamfering, marking, grinding scales... finishing the scale fronts up to 800 grit... glued up and cleaned up... looking great! I'm excited!

Sweet! I'm all ears, as usual!

:D I'm beyond fried here... that was a ton of grinding so bear with me, lol!

Knives always warp a tiny bit during heat treat, they like to bend away from the side that had the most heat/grinding stress. So... on a right hand ground chisel ground knife generally the tip will turn a bit to the left after heat treat. Luckily this part of the knife is naturally left thicker so just grind the warp out of the back and you are good to go! Sometimes this can be mitigated by alternating sides grinding or like I do, grinding post heat treat.

I'd test the blades before final finishing, if you feel anything is too hard throw in the oven at 450 for 2 hours, water cool, two more at 440. The kitchen oven is fine, just wash the knives well and preheat. I feel everything should be heat treated perfectly but it all depends on final use... don't be afraid to really whack something during testing! It goes against instinct but pays off later.

It's always better to go a bit harder then temper down/alter geometry than make the blade harder again.

I hope this helps!

Its a great budget TT, of couse through that old amp pretty much everything sounds the same, kinda crappy! I used to have the TT run through a Sansui that sounds much much better, but its in storage. I really need to get it back out. I use Grado carts, typically Blue, but I think this TT has a Green on it.

That stone in the ring is bright lemon yellow, it was just washed off quickly in the sink for the pic, still lots of mud in the setting! I'll probaly drop it in the ultrasonic later and hit it with a sunshine cloth.

That sounds like Citrine, cool stuff! It is in the quartz family and will take a buffing nicely... cerium oxide or aluminum oxide will do the trick if it needs it.

I'll check those cartridges, it has been a while... my old Sony is a 1200 clone and will be sweet with a decent cartridge. I have a few cheapie DJ style tables too along with a Pioneer mixer.

The tube project sounds very cool and I am considering one myself! I just love the warm sound. I have a newer class T amp in the shop, I feel they will be the way to do things in the future. The acoustics are just nuts! Any kind of stereo project is fun.

Grado cartridges are great. I've got an old Shure in my Dual 1019 - I don't recall the model. It's been a pretty solid performer for a while. Need to make some repairs to the TT itself though - the clutch isn't grabbing right. Need to disassemble, clean it all up, nano-lube it and give it another go before calling in the pros.

1200 clone, you mean the venerable Technics 1200? Thats a direct drive if i remember right. The SL-BD20D is a belt drive which I like a little better. Some day I will have a Music Hall mmf5 turn table, That is an awesome TT! I may make a glass platter for my current one though, it will be interesting to see if there is much difference to my ears. Liam, do you use cork or felt pad on your platter? I like Dual stuff, Im running some Dual bookshelf speakers with permanently temporary Monster cables. I just picked up some cat5 ethernet cable to make some new speaker cables though, 10 guage equivalent!

Cat5 makes great speaker cables...

I've actually got the stock pad on the Dual. Some sort of composite plastic. Never felt a need to change it.

I "collected" turn tables.. mostly old ones... most are gone now.. I saved a technics (model number evades me now)... out in the shop..

Have an old mixing board.. MTX even lol... I'd toss that someones way if they pay the shipping... photos if anyone cares too

My wax collection just sits now.. sigh my last real relationship, her brother was a wax collecting god. Worked at Tower records forever back in the day... then a bookstore where he got basically free music.. a basement wall to wall 20ft by at least 15ft, floor to ceiling... thousands... and his CD collection was much much MUCH worse, lol... his entire bedroom was insulated with cd shelves... he said approx 10000+ records and who knew how many CDs... WTF FREAK :)

Ok, back to making dough.

too...

:D Morning guys!

...I don't think my Sony is direct drive, just looks like a 1200! It is decent but nothing special. When I recorded a lot of music I had three tables set up. Loads of records and cd's!

I think I told you guys I have an album of electronic music I made, it was back in the day but I still want to get it online, some of it is pretty decent.

I bought my Pioneer amp as a Freshman in college and it is still going strong. I'm using 4 Yamaha NS-10's for the monitors along with a Dayton center channel. The sound is incredible! I recently retired the disc changer and mostly listen to satellite radio. Inexpensive system but I'm going by the Frank Zappa theory... listen to your music on the speakers it was mixed on and it might be close. he even listed the studio monitors and recording setup on a lot of his albums.

This is the best... I have heard every line before in a studio or music store somewhere... lmao I even have that SM57 mic and have told my wife how awesome it is. "This only cost $99 and was used in most major recordings..." :p :D

Mornin guys!

Got that citrine ring all cleaned up and polished, didn't go nuts on it to try and remove all the little imperfections, just hit I with a jewelers rouge cloth and cleaned the setting. The color shows much better now that the back of th setting is not full of dirt and crud!

I think I might get my Sansui receiver out of storage today, but I have to dig a VW engine case out of the shop to sell. Finally found someone who didn't want to ruin a perfectly good type 3 engine case for a type 1. Gets it outta my shop and puts money in my pocket! It was going to be a second engine build anyways, but I'll stick with what I got for now.

Have a good one! Its rainy and gloomy here, I hate it...

Hmm I gotta look up that jig, I can use one for the little skinny knives I make, the narrow blades cn get screwed up easily entering the belt at a slightly off angle.

Just pulled that ring out of the ultra sonic and the stone has some really nice fire and sparkle! Only one tiny pit right in the middle of the table, it looks even better than th last pic! I burnished the scuffs out a bit, using my DFK marling spike, works well for that!
