  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Knives and Drinks!

IPA YUCK!! Forgot beer on the town run today. Had some of these in the back of the fridge. If they're cold AF, they're drinkable... Chronovore Chronovore

I recently had a similar experience. This time I've of year, I'm mostly drinking darker beers, strong ales, or barley wines. We were having a "meat and potatoes" dinner and I was excited to have a lighter beer with it. I hadn't noticed that what I thought were two regular German beers in the back of the fridge were one regular German beer and some insane American IPA. My wife instantly called dibs on the non-IPA...

Instead of complimenting my food or at least just washing it down, the face-punch of the hops ran roughshod over the food. The cloying bitterness from a sip would poison the next bite of food too. That kind of beer has such a narrow window of pairings for me, maybe a plate of strong cheese and fruit? I almost never want to drink one on its own. Almost every time I do, I get all I came for within the first few sips.

If you can find JW Lees Harvest Ale, lagavullin cask, that smoky barley wine goes great with a meat and potatoes kind of meal (or even without the meat and potatoes). An alternative, if you can find something like Averna or Punt e mes in your liquor shop, is 2 oz of your favorite stout stirred with 1 oz of Averna plus 1/2 oz rye, over a big ice cube. Happy holidays!

I used to belong to a club at a local pub that ran an international beer tour. We had traditional cask beers on rotation, all kinds of good stuff. The JW Lees Harvest Ale for a given year was always a big hit.

I had been cellaring some when the pandemic hit and I was glad for it. :)
