Knives at Walmart

On my return from vacation, I stopped by the local Walmart store to pick up a few things and walked by the Sporting Goods area. To my surprise, I caught a glimpse of a few new "knife" items in stock which I just had to take home with me. I ended up with a Gerber Harsey Air Ranger, a Gerber LST II, a grey Kershaw Scallion, a Kershaw Vapor and a Leatherman Juice S2, all at very very affordable prices. If you haven't seen the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger yet, get one. This knife is superbly made, but the only bad part is that Walmart has it available with partial serrations only as well as the grey aluminium handled Kershaw Scallion. They also had some knew things like the new Schrade Simon, Buck Juno, Gerber Companion, and a new "skeletonized" Gerber EZ-Out, but without a doubt the best buy is the Kershaw Vapor for just under $20.00 US

(Edited for spelling) :D

I have said before that Wal-Mart's upgrading their knife selection is a great omen for knife lovers in America. The fact that the nation's largest retailer has seen fit to upgrade its selection of one handers and multitools after 9/11 suggests that the acceptance of knives in America is much stronger than many of us at this forum would believe because Wal-Mart is definitely aiming at the average consumer, not the knife afficianado.

Anthony, I agree. It is a pleasant surprise to see chains like Walmart upgrade their knife selection, not only for us, but for the average Joe as well. Interestingly, there was a note by the Kershaw SpeedSafe models which read: "May not be available in all locations." They're legal to own and carry where I live, but are there areas which consider the SpeedSafe knives illegal?

Oh god bless Wal-Mart, soon I will have no where to
shop, and my life will be easy, I just a good trip
to supercenter, long lines, huge stores, bad parking,
but they do have low prices, which makes it all worth
it. Nothing like selling lots of product for little
or no profit.

The WalMarts in my area have a host of great closeout bargains ... ie. Victorinox Huntsman @ $23, Recruits @ $10, plus a wide assortment of Buck, Gerber, and Schrade closeouts.

I believe that Michigan is the state where speed safe knives have run into trouble. A while back, I heard that a local DA declared that they were autos so Kershaw and the distributors have steered clear of Michigan, or least that's what I heard.

I was able to buy lots of decent knives as the changed their stock, but without a doubt the best bargain was 2 Case Trappers, 1 from 97', and 1 from 98' for $4 each.:D :D

4 bucks?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
holy s!!!!!!!!!! i'm going to start looking in the wal-mart ads!

Great, JUST GREAT. I just bought a Case Trapper as a birthday gift for my father-in-law for $35!!

I bought my first knife when I was 13, and I got it from Wal-Mart. They sell good quality stuff like Buck, Gerber, Case, and Victorinox for great prices. I carried the EZ-Out for 2 years. It was a good, cheap knife. In my opinion, for a practical and durable work knife, a lot of the Wal-Mart stuff can beat Benchmades and Microtechs. Which cost 3 or 4 times as much.

you are talking about Wal-Mart superstore right ?
I checked couple my local wal-mart.. nothing interesting (was looking for vapor :) just same old stuff :)BTW my booth local targets get rid of most knifes (they don't even have the counter in the sporting good section. only few multitools left)

While you're in the Wally World sporting goods department, walk over to the Wall O' Maglites and see if they have any Brinkman Legend LX flashlights for sale. $19.95, a small and super bright flashlight that uses (expensive but powerful) 123 Lithium batteries and a high powered Xenon bulb. It's a poor man's Surefire E-2, if you will. Heckuva sweet little light, only sold at Wal-Mart, and seemingly 'out of stock' everywhere all the time - I just found one yesterday and I've been hunting for 'em for a few months. Look for 'em when you're there and buy one if you see one.
Batteries for these can last for 10 years unused, making them an excellent 'back up' tactical light candidate. Battery burn time is short, only an hour or so. Another downside, these batteries can run $5-$8 EACH if you buy them one at a time from the usual battery sources like Wal-Mart. Buy 20 packs of Sanyo or Panasonic 123's from many online sources & get the price down to $2 or less per battery.

On Topic. My Wally World had the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger for $45, and the Kershaw Vapor for $20. I plan to grab an Air Ranger next trip.

Yep, the SuperCentre in my area has them. If you're interested in the Kershaw Vapor, they have both models, large and small, except that they only stock the plain edge Vapor and the serrated Vapor II.

$4 nice.I had to spend $17 bucks at Wall-mart for my Case Trapper, but I got one with some sort of Stag handle.:)

Gentlemen - there are two wal-marts in my neck of the woods. Both are 'basic,' not super Wallyworlds. One is built into a shopping mall. Both have the enlarged selection of working blades and firearms.

This is in Eastern MA, where we have to deal with assinine knife control laws in addition to assinine gun control.

So I went to check it out, and saw all the great knives mentioned.
A strange thing I noticed, there used to be real knives on display, now there is just a printed cardboard display. Was this done for cost cutting? Is it like that at your walmart?

I talked to the guy at our Walmart. He said that they are updating. It is not a superstore. He is waiting for the display template and then will convert the case. He was nice enough to dig around in the boxes for me, but no kershaw shipment yet.
Thanks for the heads up.

The Supercentre in my area also has a cardboard display featuring pictures of the knives. All you have to do is let th clerk know which one you're interested in. Fortunately, the store I went to had all the new models in stock, but the clerk was an airhead, so it took him a while to find the models I was asking for.

Ian, the Scallions sold by Walmart are partially serrated with a grey aluminium handle. They also have the standard plain edge Chive for a few bucks less.
