Knives at Walmart

I went to Wallyworld and got a new CHIVE at lunch today. It makes me wonder about local laws. Not if it's legal to carry...but if it's legal to drive back to work one handed while you pop this jewel open with the other hand, over and over. I might have gotten a little bit 'all over the road' for a while there, I was having a real good time opening my new knife and chortling with glee. Heck, I'm still having a real good time. Heeeee!

El Cid,

My guess is that Kershaw Speedsafe is illegal in California. Everything is illegal there, including most residents.

I asked our DA or Commonwealths Attorney here in VA and the DA in the next county over about the Kershaw knives with the assisted opening, they both said they were switchblades, but thats here in Virginia, for any of you in this State.

(if I remember correctly) According to Kershaw they're supposed to be legal in all 50 states, but like most things it is rather subjective.

On Father’s Day I hit both the Wally Worlds here and no luck on a Vapor. They said they get shipments in daily and more Vapors could show up at any time. I picked up a Chive while I was there just so I would have something to play with.

Every day I called both stores to see if any more Vapors arrived. This last Saturday I hit pay dirt. The store I went to had a couple of Vapors including one of the Japanese manufactured ones. I picked it up. Guess I’m going to have to get a Vapor II and a Scallion to round out the collection.

Living in a Major Metropolitan area (Houston) I have a choice of around 10 Walmarts within an Hour of driving.

My buddy was just by. He stopped at the Wally in Alvin some 25 miles south of me. He asked to see a Vapor. It was a China built one and he is big time anti-China built stuff (will have to stop buying anything pretty soon with that mindset). So then he tries a Harsey Air Ranger. He >claims< they have it in plain blade and serrated. I have only seen serrated. He wouldn't have it because it is built in Taiwan.

Jeez, but I have a snooty buddy!

Anyhow, I plan to go get one of those plain HARs if he ain't lied to me!

I gotta get down to the one about 10 minutes South of here... all this talk of closeouts cheap, and they had the old style display last time I was in!

I'm glad I bought a second Japan built Vapor when I did!!!

I believe that Michigan is the state where speed safe knives have run into trouble. A while back, I heard that a local DA declared that they were autos so Kershaw and the distributors have steered clear of Michigan, or least that's what I heard.

I don't know if that's true or not. They sell Kershaws at a local reputable gun shop that say they're ok to carry. I'm not sure if they sell them at WalMart though since there's only one that I know of around the Detroit area.

Hey nifrand,

I wasn't trying to turn this thread into a "your state vs. mine debate", but one does get the impression that California has very strict gun and knife control laws. Often when I am looking at advertisements or trade publications for firearms and knives I see the words "Cannot Be Shipped To California", and sometimes " Or Massachusetts" is added.

Sorry, folks, about diverging from the topic of "knives at Walmart". I've bought some knives there myself, and the prices were the lowest anywhere.

LOL!:D :D :D

The last time I talked to one of the salespeople at Walmart, they told me that the SpeedSafe knives were not going to be sold in Michigan, but he also stated that not all stores in the States will carry them. It depends on local jurisdictions, I suppose.

now be nice!!! only half the residents !!. the knives i mostly see marked 'not for sales in ca.' are double edged, or are plastic, or concealable, as in necklace, lipstick, cane ,etc. The rest, they just harass people about.;)

I stopped in to the WalMart on Morse Rd. near Easton this evening...

Picked up two bottles of "Equate" scented antimicrobial liquid soap in these 7.5 oz. clear plastic dispensers. "Melon" and "Sun Ripened Peach." According to the label on one, I can "delight in the peach fragrance each time" I wash my hands!

And they are made in the U.S.A., and as far as I know, are legal in all 50 states! Eighty-seven cents per bottle.

I used some of the sun ripened peach to try to clean off the sticker goo from the knife I got there. It's a Buck 470. Rubber handle, stainless blade (I hope) of about 5.5", and no sheath. That's why the sticker was stuck on the blade, I guess. For twelve bucks. (There's another sheathless one left, if anyone's interested.) I had the clerk wrap it with some stiff paper before putting it into the plastic bag. (Didn't want to stick someone on the way out. "Safety Guy" should at least try to live up to his name, right?)

I managed to get most of the goo off without cutting myself. The peach fragrance was nice. This knife is going in my shower (sure hope it's stainless), probably stuck in something large enough and innocent enough looking to blend in with the mold and mildew. Maybe a huge loofah thingy. (Just kidding about that mold. It's not overwhelming.) This blade will replace a Buck Diamondback 3.25, which also has a rubber handle, but is not as well shaped and comforting when exiting the hot water upon hearing...noises. (I have a nice sturdy plastic scrub brush for backup.)

Anyway, I also handled a Kershaw Vapor. Impressive, I admit. But it was the small one and made in China. The selection was not too good, it seemed, and the clearance knives were "slim pickens." Maybe if I had gone there a few days ago?

I almost bought both the Bucks, as having one at each end of the tub would come in handy with soap in my eyes and the noises growing louder. Something tells me that by the time I'm finished finding the perfect "cheap-bathtub-last-ditch-defense-get-me-to-my-.38-knife," I'll have spent enough to have gotten a CS Trailmaster with a custom pastel bathtub sheath.

Now hunting for the perfect refrigerator knife,

Karl

P.S. Don't ya'll worry, if I have guests overnight, I'll warn them not to stab themselves with the loofah. Sure hope that knife is stainless.

Update:

The store just South of me. What a difference several days make. They had the old style display. Now they have the new style.

My buddy is an idiot. I went to the Alvin store because he swore he held a plain blade Harsey Air Ranger there. It ain't so.

I asked to see a Vapor. It was a China model. Sure glad I got a second Japan knife. The China knife looks fine. It has a little blade play that the Japan knives don't EVEN have. And the blade is ground more like my clones than my Japan Vapors.

I'll have to sample several, but for now I still think the China Vapor isn't a terrible buy at $19.96.... but if you can find a Japan Vapor JUMP ON IT!!!

(just had my other one out to verify what I've said)

Safety Guy,

Get a Scandinavian knife for your refrigerator. They are designed for artic conditions.

I live in the most beautiful state in the US.Surf in the morning, ski in the afternoon.Ride a motorcycle year round.Carry a auto everyday. Also a Kershaw Ricochet.Have a bunch of LEO friends, including Highway Patrol. The consenses is(from the cops)if you have an attitude, warrents,or previous violence in your background do not carry anything that will draw attention.
Been stopped on my Harley a bunch of times. No problems.Of course I am pure as driven snow.
My Wally World is getting a bunch of Kershaws in.Maybe a speed safe is in the cards.:)

I could be wrong about this, but are not autos LEGAL in CA, as long as the blade length is under 2"? I seem to recall seeing online MANY automatics specifically made for the CA market with sub 2" blades. Anybody know?

Thanks, W.T! Yep, I've been wanting a Frosts for some time now, and have recently looked over a website with Scandinavian knives. I'll be adding one or two (or more, you know the deal) when I can.
