Knives at your workplace.

One guy asked me why I carry a knife instead of using a utility knife like he had. I simply told him my knife was safer, the blade won't fall out and I'd much rather use something of quality over a marginal piece of junk. He forgot his utility knife one day and asked If I would use mine to open a box and cut some twine for him. Told him too bad and handed him some scissors. The rest of the guys carry KAI, Benchmade, Spyderco or something of the like. They're necessary in the workplace.

I work in an office (IT) so I don't like flashing around a knife. Everyone knows I have one, though. My boss even introduces me as "The knife guy."

I'm an industrial mechanic and knives of any kind is forbidden on the production floor.i carry my para2,and native5 in my get home bag keep it in my locker.but I do carry my mini grip with a deep pocket clip.sshhh

I'm a machinist so... shop floor work. I used to work in Kentucky and the company was more concerned about people wanting to conceal carry in the building than the ubiquitous pocket or belt pouch knives.

I just changed jobs to a place in Ohio. The company rules I had to read had a "strict no weapons policy" banning any "illegal" knives over 2".

It didn't take me long to strike up a conversation on what was accepted with everyone pulling out their pocket clipped knives. So it's not a lot different really.

I'm a supervisor in the Computer to Plate department at a printing plant. Carrying a knife is almost mandatory. We cut stuff all day long every day.

There is a rule in the company handbook that bans the carry of any knife with a blade longer than 3". Nobody follows it or pays it any mind.

That said, the knife I carry is compliant... but still a brute for a 3" blade. :)

Thread is worthless without pics...

Im a police officer, carry Koenig Atrox (auto) clipped to my pocket. In my car i keep a Scrapyard Dumpster Mutt and usually a larger one also. No real policy on what you carry, only how you carry it.

I was a hospital vendor for about 10 years, so I carried a yellow BM 556 and brown Delica most often. Landscaping this summer, I generally carry my Tasman SE, but recently got a waved Endura - which I am taking everywhere now. The guys I work with don't carry knives, they just use mine instead, lol. I'm not that guy - that doesn't loan a knife to someone. Then again, they don't abuse them or anything. It's good, lol.

Part of the reason I love this forum is that folks on here ARE the reason you should never have a hard and fast rule and always go case by case. ;)

I am a bailiff and carry a .38 Special (mandated by company policy) at work, so nobody is bothered that I always have a knife as well. However, city policy prohibits employees and all visitors (law enforcement exempted) from carrying knives of any size and all persons entering must go through metal detectors and all purses and packages must be X-rayed, so my ability to carry there is only because I am security.

I had previously worked as a English and reading tutor at a local middle school where "weapons" were prohibited so there I carried a Spyderco Dragonfly deep in the pocket rather than clipped on. Several other school employees did something similar.

Other than that it's been 30+ years since I worked any job that wouldn't let me carry a knife, which is good because I have carried since I was 11 and feel naked without a knife.

No fixed blades (courtesy of an HR rep who flipped her wig after seeing a fella with a rigger's knife).

No switchblades (PA laws forbid them anyway).

No blades over 3" in length, although that's from choil to tip, so I can get away with my Folding Razel.

Those are the rules in the employee handbook, but there have been efforts in the past to "encourage" everybody to use utility knives. Once, they even gave us all utility knives that were spring-loaded to snap closed if you took your finger off the button.

I got asked to cut things for people a lot for a while, until that little "safety" fad passed.

People are pretty relaxed about my knife, because they've seen it make the job easier.

Knives are welcome and almost everyone carries one. Most just have a knife and couldn't tell you anything about it. There's probably more leathermans than knives. I will carry both. There aren't any policies about knives. A lot of people have some sort of rescue knife. I've thought about carrying a fixed blade but I don't think it would go over well being out in the public. I like to carry a larger folder at work. So far I haven't had any negative comments.

I work as a service tech for a parking company. I carry a ZT 301 daily and never had any problems. Most of the the other techs carry a knife of some sorts. Most of the comments if any come from customers and only one I can recall was negative, but that was in an office doing an install.

I retired 10 years ago. My Wife doesn't care what I carry as long as I'm working on her "Honey do list".

When I was still in Active Duty, I didn't leave the house without at least one folder and my leatherman. Usual set up was Spyderco Military or Benchmade Infidel auto in the pocket, Buck 110 and Leatherman MUT on the belt. If my unit was cooler about allowing "tacti-cool" stuff on our kit, I would have had a fixed blade on there as well.

I'm a full time student now, and a Tobacconist damn near full time at the local Cigar shop. my school has a strict "no pointy-stabby, no gun" policy, so all that stays in the car while I'm on campus. At the shop, I always have a knife on me, (Currently carrying a new-to-me ZT0301) and the Glock usually stays behind the counter rather than on my hip to not piss off any potential customer with weaker sensibilities...

I've noticed a distinct lack of pictures here....

Current set up

Old Reliable

Sr. Systems Engineer and I carry a Victorinox Pioneer every day at work or not. I've carried a Kershaw Skyline, self made bandsaw knife, and a couple of others in my career. My last job was strict about precived weapons and so I started carrying the SAK. I've found the toolset on the Pioneer to be far to valuable to not carry it. I could always carry another blade but I haven't found it to be needed. I'm also a bit of a minimalist.

There are always a few pocket clips around the office every place I have worked. As a rule I have more respect for a man who bothers to keep a good sharp knife on his person.

I'm self employed and work primarily from home. If I wanted to strap on a katana and work, there's nobody to tell me know.
That said, something small like a Buck stockman, or Opinel is usually all i have in my pocket. being home I have easy access to anything bigger should i want.
I do spend a decent amount of time on the road, in which case, I keep the same small types of folders in my pocket, an Izula 2 on my belt about 50% of the time, and always a good fixed blade in the car (USMC Kabar, BK16, who knows...)

I work in a parts department at a car dealership during the day and a furniture store warehouse at night and on Saturdays so I have all kinds of stuff to open everyday. I usually carry 2 or 3 on me. I have either a Case mini copperlock or Buck canoe in the front pocket, which is what I use in front of customers and a few employees. I keep a Buck 112 or Case trapper on my belt if I need something more significant. And I like to keep a one handed opener in my back pocket just in case. Right now it's a G-10 Cryo, hopefully turning into a mini grip soon. I pretty much have something for all different kinds of tasks and environments on me.

I have never had an issue with any of my past jobs carrying a knife at work. I carry and use a folder or fixed blade, slip joint, and my leatherman everyday. The majority of my work has been in other people's homes. That being said, my only (self imposed) restriction would be to leave the gun and esee 4 in the truck until I get to know them. I recently when the to work for a friend doing mold remediation, so a lot of my work is done in crawl spaces. So lately I tend to leave fixed blades at home since they get hung up often while crawling around.
I am very fortunate to have never really experienced the hysteria revolving knives. About the only time I'll ever get looks regarding knives is when I pull it out and strop it in public.

I've worked in restaurant/catering and marketing/advertising businesses over the past decade and have never had anyone complain about my carry choices. And I usually carry folders with 3-4" blades along with a slipjoint in the watch pocket.
The 9mm XD MOD2 stays in the SUV because it's not necessary...yet.
Spyderco Military, ZT 560 and a CRK 21 micarta Insingo are my usual suspects in the rotation.
