Knives for bug out/get home bag?

This is a KNIFE forum... which is a very niche topic, and a place I go to discuss that specific tool. I know there are many different important items that go into a bug out bag, but I go to their respective community forums for those items. Just like I don't ask about knives on forums for watches, flashlights or computer programming etc.
IT CERTAINLY IS! No need to shout. ;)

My first answer was a succinct response to your question. Then the conversation expanded, as happens on Internet forums.

Yes, it was and thank you for your input. Indeed it does, I was just trying to get in front of it, before it expanded too far and keep the thread on topic as much as possible.

Personally, I have been debating the pros and cons of the super lightweight: set up (for example) benchmade buyout and esee-3/gryphon m10 vs the extremely robust: (for example) ZT 0301 and SwampRat Ratmandu/TRC M-1.

Noted. :)

I do a fair bit of sleeping out carrying it all on my back, and that is where I like the F1. It is very robust but relatively lightweight. The SAK has a saw and various other useful things. A Leatherman would also work. On the other hand, I’ve always appreciated a hefty knife and the positivity it can lend to a situation. Mental state is very important, and knowing you have bomber kit is a good start. Pretty much all the suggestions on this thread seem good to me, including yours.

I carry a Gerber strongarm, Kershaw Blur and a Leatherman supertool 300 in my bag.

Hey BF,

For those few don't know, Ontario had multiple tornado warnings last night. I was at the end of my work out last night when I got the emergency broadcast from the government of Canada about tornado warnings. I then went home and collected items to prepare for worse case scenarios. Due to how rare this type of weather is in Ontario, I don't have a bug out bag/get home bag pre-made. But it brought up something I hadn't put excessive amount of thought into before... what knive(s) would I put in my bug out bag/get home bag? Me personally, I have been debating the pros and cons of the super lightweight: set up (for example) benchmade buyout and esee-3/gryphon m10 vs the extremely robust: (for example) ZT 0301 and SwampRat Ratmandu/TRC M-1. Curious to hear your thoughts/philosphy on what knives(amd why) would you put in your bug out/get home bag.

Thanks,

Gideons

It depends on what is happening as to what is going in my "bugout bag" but if I have to premake one then I need to account for what can legaly be carried.

If it is for a SHTF scenario, I want my ESEE Junglass. But that knife is huge, and if you just have a flat tire and have a long hike home in a city, I don't think you need all that it offers.

A small 3 or 4 inch blade might work for 90% of all the scenarios.

Speaking of other stuff for a BOB. I scanned all the family's photos onto a thumb drive. Knives I can replace. Family photos and stuff, not so much. And, most of my legal documents have made it from my home to a safe deposit box.

I also have a three-tier first aid kit. A very small kit as part of my extended EDC and a fanny pack for in the Jeep make up the first two. I also have a full "aidbag" at the house. All restocking for the first two is done from that. Having three different kits allows me to carry what is practical for day to day use. That way, I'm not dragging out a trauma bag for a hangnail. It also keeps me from "advertising" to everyone what gear I own. If I ever have to bug out, I'll grab the aidbag. I can always repack and restructure my gear and give some away.

All of this reminds me, I have a rescue knife that needs to make it out to the Cherokee.

In addition to many other things, the knives I keep in my get home bag and truck at all times are a LM Wave, Gerber Strongarm, fiskars hatchet, and milsurp e-tool shovel.

I have similar and more in my pickup. I change things a bit between warm and cold weather, but there is a lot of stuff including blades. I keep a medium sized store bought first aid kit in my truck all the time. All I have to add is the kitchen sink. ;)

There is much wisdom in your comments.

I am considering placing the bigger stuff that would be more for SHTF (like your Junglass) into my camping gear. That way I have I still have it available but don't lug it around every day.

A get home bag. That's what I need to build.

I'm courious, who has sharpening gear in their BOB?

I just recently added the Condor Kumunga to my pickup stash. It's a cross between a machete and a chopper knife. I was doing a job at a property that was really grown up and all I had with me was my sak. I'm used to having a machete handy. I slashed briars and cut smaller branches off with the sak that would drag across my pickup and potentially scratch it up. After that experience, the large Kumunga got added for just this kind of thing and it happens more frequently than you would expect. Frankly, I don't know why I hadn't placed it there before other than the truck is pretty new and I just haven't added a lot of stuff at that point beyond tarp, shovel, jumper cables, tow straps, and so forth.

Your ahead of me. I have jumper cables, a few tools, and a FAK in the Jeep. That's it. No shovel, tarp, tow strap, etc..

i have a mini-van, so lots of room. besides basic tools and jack, the kit has a cheapo swiss army knife, Gerber multi-tool, and 4" Hyde square point knife. once weather gets cooler, i add a small(18") shovel, an old heavy comforter, pillow, nabs, 2 or 3 55gal drum liner plastic trash bags and a 2 liter of water.

For a GHB, just a folder would be fine. Endura 4 would be a good choice.

If I'll be caught in the woods for a few nights? I'm with Pilsner, give me an F1, a Leatherman, and a Silky saw. About 1.5 lbs and can handle everything.

If I'm a refugee (the likely end of the bug out crowd)? The 4 tools listed would be awesome if circumstances allowed.

Id suggest a nice pair of running shoes, they'll be infinitely more useful for getting home.

Sometimes people make mistakes. Cut a lil slack.

I posted this pic in a different thread last month. It’s one part of my bugout bag and contains importnat documents, a little cash, a Taurus model 85 and a Spyderco Pacific Salt.

The other part of my bag contains a bivouac sac, some water and food, and an older model SOG multitool.

Even though my bugout is likely to be urban, reading this thread makes me realize I should probably pick up a modestly priced fixed blade for my kit.
