Knives for drifting around?

Had an interesting thought today that some may be interested in. If you were going to drift around, wether it be by foot or car or whatever, what knives would you bring? We're talking very limited space and possible legal issues depending on jurisdictions. These are knives that would be used on a daily basis and would probably be the only tools you had. I'm thinking buck 110 or case sodbuster/Jr and leatherman. I don't think I'd carry a fixed blade for legal reasons. I'm very interested in everyone's opinions.

I think this will turn out similar to the vacation knives thread. Drifting is something I've always wanted to do and thought a lot about. I've always liked the western U.S., so I would probably wander out there. So many interesting people and places out there I haven't seen or met. Maybe someday I will. Too much going on and not enough money yet. What about everyone else?

CRKT Drifter and a SAK Rambler.

You get drifting out here in the western states, give me a shout... I'll buy the first round.

SAKs are king where knife laws fluctuate. I'd probably use it as an excuse to grab one of the new Boker multitools and have my Kershaw 4KXL for the less restrictive locales.

in my mind drifting is what you do to get away from the sheeple, so I'd probably camp it out hobo style. I'd for sure bring a fixed blade, I mean, you're rambling, if the jurisdiction sucks then leave. So if I was leaving this second, it'd be my great plainsman, along with my tascosa lockback, and a larger blade in my pack. I guess I don't have the same idea as you, because I would be camping out with just my pack and a little money:)

Done just that in US and Canada with a Gerber Bowie and SAK. Then in the UK, Ireland, and Netherlands it was Hackman Wirkkala puukko and SAK; and later in UK a Buck 110. Touring Israel it was a Camillus Pilot's Knife and SAK. If I get to do it again in N. Am., it will be Becker BK-15 and SOG Paratool and maybe Victorinox Trekker/GAK. In Europe it will be SOG Paratool and Opinel N° 9.

Go with what's comfortable and fits your needs and your mental image of the trip. Don't be afraid to give away a knife on the trip, trade for another, or pick up a different one that suits you better along the way.

Isn't this how Rambo got into trouble?

SAK, although those Boker tools Comeuppance mentioned just popped up on all the knife sites here in Europe, so I might go with the same excuse. And maybe an Izula tucked away deep in my bag, preferably in purple.

I use my basic EDC combo every where other than flying. Locking *CLIPLESS* folder in RFP, Leatherman Micra in LFP, full sized Leatheman MT in my day pack.

Clipless is important to not call attention to me or my knife. Opinel #9 is the most common for me. Most people friendly and capable. My Buck 500 is common too but a bit bling. I really like the Buck 110 but find it heavy and scary for the general public, so tend to not use as it as much as the others.

Zieg, I keep a Paratool in my laptop bag and needed to use it yesterday to repair a hand pump. It has great sentimental value to me since my now wife gave it to me when we were dating 30 years ago. But I was remind yet again how much I dislike that tool. I pinch my fingers every time I use it!!!! Tools bend. Not giving up the locking tools on my Blast. Nope.

Benchmade Gritillian
Victorinox Farmer
Leatherman Wave w/ bit kit and extension

Should cover just about anything you could need.

That book was butchered when they turned it into a movie. I didn't know boker made multi tools. I'm gonna have to check those out.

Multitool and hatchet. Multitools don't really register as knives in the minds of 99.9% of the population and hatchets are legal pretty much everywhere. If I felt like I really needed a fixed blade I'd add one of the smaller, more brightly colored Moras. Very untactical and quite handy.

Victorinox Fieldmaster and Spyderco Military are the two i would choose. I would keep the Spyderco out of sight as much as possible and carry the sak in a belt sheath.

It's not the be-all-end-all of multitools, but it's the only one I own, so I'm used to it. It has bitten me a few times, but no more than annoy other tool I might have fumbled with. You can have it engraved and put it in a frame on the wall. Your wife will appreciate it, maybe. :-)

I like the SAK idea. Probably that and something simple like a Delica...hmm, or maybe my serrated Pacific Salt! Yeah, I think that would be a good companion to the SAK.

I'd probably carry a large two layer SAK in my pocket and a fixed blade that I trust in some sort of back pack, essentially hidden until I need to use it. The BK-15 or BK-16 come to mind as possibles.

I'd go with something large and combat knife looking. It'd go nice with my long hair, jeans, and poncho I made out of a tarp.
