Knives for New Recon Marine

Ya could ask Him if there's one he fancy's..

I've only met him a couple times, but he and his dad talk regularly. I'm sure dad will bring it up. Plus, his team mates will clue him in, too, as to what knives they use.

Just get him anything from Zero Tolerance and stop this endless searching already...

Outdoors Fanatic thanks for the ZT recommendation. They make some nice knives. I've finished searching, though. Based on the recommendations so far, the BRK&T Bravo 1 and a multi-tool seem to be the winners.

I recommend any ka-bar, the Cold Steel SRK(old or new metal no matter), Ontario knives are service worthy.. SOG has a couple of pretty nice service knives but they over do the decor..

If you are looking for stainless steel and can wait a little. There is going to be a SS Bravo-1 in the next couple of months.
I am sure that Mike Stewart will push one to the front of the queue for an active duty serviceman.

The Bark River Bravo-1 and wet enviromet knives were developed with the help of and use of the Recon Marine!!!

The #1 knife model recommended so far is still the Bravo 1. Bark River Knives have 10 recommendations, RAT Cutlery has 4, Benchmade 4, ZT has 3.

The Bravo-1 or one of the new Bravos sound like the right choice (or maybe a Wet Enviro). That and a Leatherman should set him up right. And maybe a DMT Dia-Sharp or 2.

Thanks again for all of the recommendations and comments.

Mission MPK 10-Ti

A knife actually adopted and issued by USMC Recon personnel.

Thanks for the link. They look like good basic no nonsense knives. I thought that I read somewhere that there were some trade-offs using titanium for the blade material in an everyday use knife. For specific missions where non-magnetic and corrosion resistance are needed, it does well. Day-to-day, though steel was more practical.

I think Mission would dispute that point. They are aggressively moving their beta-Ti in place of their A2 blades. In fact, they have an A2 version of the MPK, and it is noted as a better chopper - as well as being significantly heavier - but that is about all that can be said. The MPK in titanium is specifically designed to meet the needs of Navy Seals and USMC Recon personnel.

For a truly multipurpose mission, they actually recommend the MPF in titanium. I have the MPF in A2, and it's a good knife, but the Ti would have been a much better buy for the same price.

Another one? I though BR already developed a more corrosion resistant knife (Wet ENVIRO Recon), based on feedback from a Recon training unit. Apparently, the Bravo-1 wasn't quite up to snuff.

Mr. Halbie,

You might want to check your facts.

The Wet Envro knife you are referring to was only made once for a mission specific test.

It was not meant to replace the Bravo-1.

Your response seems like it is a little slanted.

Are You the same Halbie that was banned from the other forum ?

Jim

Jim,

I'm going by what I read in a previous link in this thread:

http://www.knivesshipfree.com/Bark-...Black-Canvas-Micarta--Matte/product_info.html

"BRKT developed this knife at the request of an elite U,.S. Marine Corp. Force Recon Training Unit. They wanted a knife that was more Corrosion resistant than the Bravo-1 for constant exposure to wet conditions."

You might want to stick to the topic and avoid personal attacks.

The insinuation the the Bravo-1 wasn't "up to snuff" is far different than what was written in the ad copy, Halbie.

Simply put, carbon steel will rust more than stainless. Everyone knows that. Trying to denigrate a maker's product the way you just did makes the reader suspicious that you have some sort of agenda. If you want to elminate that suspicion, then, in the future, you might be more careful with your choice of words.

By the same token, JimConvex, what happens in other forums needs to stay in other forums. We deal only with behavior here. Please keep the cross-forum stuff out of BFC.
