I know that many of us have already given knives to our troops. Today I found out that I have the opportunity to go to San Antonio BAMC and the Intrepid Center to visit with some of our troops that are amputees and in many cases multiple amputees.

I would like to know if any of you would be willing to send a knife to me to give to these brave men and women. Please let me know if you are willing to do this. I would like to make sure that every soldier that I meet will get a knife. I will make sure that each one knows who you are and has all of you contact information. I will also make sure to send you a picture of the trooper with your knife.

The news always talks about soldiers that gave the ultimate sacrifice, their life. What do you call the sacrifice of a limb or multiple limbs? I'm not sure but you call the person a true American HERO.

We all owe these heroes a debt of gratitude, and the donation of a nice knife or knives doesn't even begin to cover it.

Remember, These folks are amputees and will never see combat again so the knife does not need to be a tactical or combat knife. Anything to so gratitude will be greatly appreciation. And remember, I'm not doing this for me, I will take no credit and will make sure that your donation of a knife or knives will be noted by those that matter, the heroes.

Let me know,

Allen Mantanona

Think of the freedom you enjoy and then think of having no legs... or no arms... these people gave so much. Lets all ban together and thank them.

The sierra hikers are coming along. the first 2 were....okay. (hold an edge but a bit ugly to my eye now) The third is pretty decent. Number four I'm working on is number 1 of the final design. I've got 3 more profiled, too!

BTDT, spent my time in VA hospitals. Guess I'll send one out before I upgrade my membership here and start selling:thumbup:

Anyone thought about modified handles for finger/thumb amputees?

When ?? I would love to help but........ as honorable an idea as this is, you may be setting yourself up. What happens if you are able to visit with 10 heros and only have 9 knives ?? What happens if you are able to visit with 50 heros and only have 5 knives ? How does one choose the recipient when each and every one of them should be given a kings ransom and more

This is a great thought, and I will attempt to answer;

1) As a disabled veteran, I can tell you the biggest gift that can be given is for someone, anyone, and everyone to mutter two little words, "Thank you." Everyone I meet will get this and it will be given with a sincerity that words cannot describe.

2) I am doing my best to get about 50 copies of Col. Ed Hubbard's book
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0963923102/ref=pd_bbs_sr_olp_1/102-2070432-1476944?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182974658&sr=8-1

3) I also plan to personally fund and give about 20 $50 gift cards from restaurants.

4) No one man can be expected to change everyone's lives... But all men can change the world by changing just one life. I do not pretend to be able to change these heroes lives but I will do everything I can to show all of them how freaking grateful I am.

UPDATE;

First let me start by saying, I have received a few emails from folks saying what they are currently doing to support our troops. To these folks I would say, thank you for remembering our heroes.

I have also received a few pms from folks that have fallen on hard times. We have all been there. But remember you can always help by keeping our troops in your prayers.

I know we have a bunch of patriots on BFC. And I know that many of you have already done a lot for our troops. All I ask is if you can do anything to help, you will.

Also, I have secured 5 guided whitetail hunts to give out. If you can do anything to help these heroes please do.

God Bless,

Allen

Yes, when are you doing this? I would like to meet you there to help out any way i can. My grandpa was a WWII Coast Guard veteran. I have spent many days with him when he had to be hospitalized. PM me so we can meet up there and then grab a bite afterwards.

David,

Sorry I did not answer your question. I will be going on July 6. I know this is a bit last minute but I was just invited yesterday.

Jacob,

I will need to ask the MG if I can bring others. He is a dear friend of mine and invited me and mentioned there were limited spaces and that it was invitation only. I will ask the MG later today if there is room for another. Also, I got your voicemail the other day... I'm sorry I was not able to answer or return your call, my old lady is back in the hospital. I have been running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

Thanks to you both,

Allen

She may be getting out today. As far as anyone has determined, her biggest problem is being married to me! She has had some surgery in the last few months, female stuff, but this is not why she is in now. She battles depression and has been hospitalized many times. She is getting ECT or shock treatments this time around. As you know I have 4 kiddos also and a business I'm trying to run (not in the ground). Needless to say, I have a full plate. Thanks for asking.

Allen

hey man
sounds like a great idea... i'll se what i can do about getting you a knife or two.
take care
~Chris

I know what you mean by a full plate. I think getting out after she is back will do you some good. Keep you from going insane. That is until you spend a day with me. :D  Hope she gets out today.

Sounds great. When I can get out I would appreciate it if you can line up some tequila shots and some loose ladies! hehehehehe

Thanks for the good thoughts,

Allen

I'm also a disabled vet, and I can say that the little things count. A knife is freaking awesome- but anyone can grab a pile of old books (don't assume any type is better than any other, I read Stephen Hawking for the first time at the VA) and drop them off at a VA hospital. I bring a pile every time I have an appointment.

Personal contact helps a lot, too. church or scouting trips, arrange a BBQ, anything. Some of these poor dudes don't see or talk to anyone except increasingly overwhelmed (or in some cases, rude) staff and increasingly bitter permanent patients for months at a time. It's hard enough to come back to the world without isolation and support.

Gig, this is awesome. And guided hunts, too!
