Knives & Guns

Knife collecting cured my pistol collecting addiction. :D

Great thread! Always was both! I have mostly been able to be a knife nut however. Denmark is a difficult place for gun nuts!
However, as my knife nuttyness showed up again earlier this year, so did my desire for guns.
Right now, I have joined a shooting club, borrowed a (darn nice, BTW) Beretta 92FS Brigadea for a couple of months while trying to find out which gun is right for me.
Then there are two BM's, an 813 and a 720 - and probably an 856 on the way soon!
I am a watch nut too.....I need a second job!:-)

Cheers
Bo

I don't own any guns and don't hunt. Would like to someday, though, and I've gone trap and skeet shooting a few times and really enjoyed it. Once I get a few bills paid, I'd like to finally get an O/U .12 gauge and really get into the hobby. Also, the other day, my wife (who more than once has given the old "I don't want a gun in the house" sermon) said that a colleague of hers told her about a local indoor shooting range that rents guns. She's all psyched up to go do some shooting now! I've got to get her down there before she changes her mind.

I’m one of those oddball knifenuts. I’ve never fired a gun, and don’t really have that much of an urge either. If I ever did, it would be because I was out hunting. I’m a fisherman at heart, and firmly believe in the ideals behind hunting for food or sport. That covers rifles, bows, and some exotic weapons. Handguns on the other hand, have never sat well for me. I find them to be distinctly different than knives and rifles. Knives and rifles are tools. Handguns have only one true purpose. I understand the need to carry one for self-defense these days, but I wish the damned things had never been thought of.

Knives, guns, rods & reels, and simplicity as much as possible! Function over form always!

Hi Buzzbait,

Knives and rifles are tools. Handguns have only one true purpose.

I couldn't respectfully disagree with you more! The anti-gun segment of our population would love for you to believe that, but it is wrong.

Handguns are a tool as much as a rifle is. Here are several examples:

  • Often while hunting, the game does not die when first shot, so a handgun is a much more effective tool to finish the job than a high-powered rifle at really close range.
  • There are also individuals who hunt with handguns.
  • But, ask any handgun user. Plinking is a ton of fun. There is nothing sadistic about target practice. It is relaxing. It is fun. It hones concentration skills (along with eye/hand coordination skills). It brings people (like friends or families...kids and dads, etc.) together to do something fun.
  • Of course, it is also a great protector of self and family.

A handgun only becomes sinister in the hands of a madman. Any tool can be labeled a weapon. It is only in the hands of the user that a tool becomes a weapon.

A thousand amens to that!

Buzzbait and all - I'm in full agreement with Ron@SOG , having spent many years shooting rifles and handguns for sport, competition and pleasure. When some government agency can preclude me from owning a handgun, the next step will be to do the same with a rifle -- don't think so - check out some of the European countries' laws. I'm from Arizona and can't wait to get home where I can own whatever I want, carry it, use it and have fun with it. Abusers of this RIGHT are punished forthwith. For knifenuts, check out how many states have antiquated, non-sensical knife laws. With the technology of modern knife making, many of our favorite blades could be termed illegal ubder these old statutes. Punish the wrongdoer, not the tool !!!

Pete, you bought a new rifle and you didn't tell at breakfast yesterday! We have to go shooting. I need to take my Swedish Mauser out the range again! :D
I have several guns, but none as nice as Pete's, he has some nice toys!

I think a couple of you guys mistook the real intention of my last post. The ability to carry handguns is a great privilege, but one that very many people abuse. I just don't think that humanity, as a whole, has the ability to handle that privilege yet. It’s just too easy to abuse, I guess. It’s sad, but painfully obvious.

I can’t see target shooting as a good enough excuse to justify the handgun problem we are now faced with. The reward is far less than the penalty on society. Self-defense is a very valid reason though, no matter how much I don’t like them. Who knows? I may have to carry one myself some day for this purpose. I won’t like it, but may have to do it.

As for making the close range kill on a wounded deer, that’s what we have BIG KNIVES for. :D Remember what forum we're posting on!!!

Buzzbait, the hard experience in the 31 states that currently allow widespread self-defense is that people willing to pass background checks and training CAN be trusted.

Michigan and New Mexico just passed new laws adding them to the list.

The self-defense permits as practiced in New York (esp. City), California, MA, NJ and others allows the "rich, famous and connected" to *buy* self-defense ability. Howard Stern and Donald Trump have NYC handgun carry permits, while ordinary peons are laughed at.

It's *disgusting*, a violation of both equal protection and the basic human right to self defense.

Buzzbait, I most repectfully must disagree with your hypothesis. The ability to carry a weapon is not a privilege, it is a right! Something that is often overlooked in the "gun control" controversy is the wording "well regulated" in the 2nd ammendment. A review of dictionaries of the time, defines "regulated" as equipped. Ships and hotels of the time were described as well regulated, indicating they were well provisioned. Many local militias supplied their own arms at that time. A review of correspondence between the framers of the Declaration of Independance, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as found in the Federalist Papers will show that these folks wanted us "civilians" to have arms to protect ourselves from abusive government, so that we could not be overrun by that government. As to the possiibility of a "Handgun Problem" - I truly don't see that there's a problem. Violent crime is way down according to the government. Most crime I read about is druggies shooting druggies -- from my perspective, let them kill each other! Recent authoritative texts have proven that in areas where the concealed carry of weapons is allowed, that violent crime is greatly reduced. In Florida, armed crimes against citizens plummeted when concealed carry laws were enacted. Conversely, crimes against tourists rose,as the "bad guys" supposed them to be defenseless. In my opinion, to single out handguns as being offensive opens the door for government to also restrict the ownership of knives. Who has the right to tell me I can only own one folder and one fixed blade??? Nobody !! Next it will be - you're single, you can't live in a three bedroom house, or - you don't "need" to have six sport coats and two suits - give them to the poor!!!! What I have, I've earned - be it clothes, housing, knife collection, guns or thumbtacks! You'd mentioned "need" - I suppose that's my answer to the "need" comment. I have lots of things I don't need, but this is America - I don't have to justify my possesions to some government beaurocrat on a witch hunt!! I don't mean to be offensive and hope this isn't construed that way. My rights are under attack by folks who share your ideas and who in my opinion are very sadly mis-informed. If you are truly interested in pursuing this subject, may I respectfully suggest a broad spectrum of reading and maybe a trip to a shooting area with a freind who has a .22 handgun -- bouncing a can around is very satisfying, challenging, inoffensive and a lot of fun. BTW, I'm almost 60 and have owned more firearms than I can count -- I quit counting when I was 21, the total was over 1200 !! And, I've never shot or killed anyone --- more than can be said for Ted Kennedy's driving skills.
My apologies to my fellow forumites for the length of this post, a nerve was touched, no - it was hammered !!! I normally shine off this type of thing and consider my thoughts to be wasted on folks who are like-minded - kind of like preaching to the choir (sp?) -- Again, my apologies -- From Buzzbait's posts, it seems as though he's an intellegent guy and I can only hope this is not offensive. Thanks

Ron and Pete already said my piece for me, so let me ask this:
What handgun problem are we now faced with?
What is this great penalty that society has paid since handguns were created?

The only problem I can see is the liberal trash that don't want anyone to have them, because their infantile intellects cannot comprehend that inanimate objects are incapable of actions in and of themselves, and that people have been killing each other since creation, and haven't needed firearms to do it.

The crap about humanity as a whole not being able to handle it is just that-crap.
Guns are more expensive, harder to buy (legally), own, or carry than ever before.
We don't have a "gun problem". We have a people problem.

if you wanna learn a bunch about guns, head over to www.thefiringline.com and check em out.

lots of information.good people. theres even a few of our very own knife knuts over there.
i was wanting to learn more,so i went and man...
that place is awesome!

anything that makes liberals shudder nut

Hmm...

Methinks I have a "Right" to go about armed....albeit illegally by the standards of the state of my residence...California.

My right comes from those rights as enumerated under my Federal Constitution, and the Bill of Rights contained therein.

We, my ancestors on both sides of the family tree, have been in this great country for 300 some-odd years...we made it, we own it, and we govern it...it's ours. Period, end of story.

Some may see this as delusional grandeur on my part, and that may very well be....but you see, I take my constitutional right very seriously, and should you desire to take that right away from me and mine, I'll not be so polite with you....

I surmise that some day other Americans may pay me a visit, they'll come under the "color of authority" with the intent to disarm me....and I'll have to shoot those people.

It's nothing personal, and please don't take it that way...it's just that having lost a fair portion of my family lineage over the last 300 years in an attempt to keep this land free from aggressors, I feel an obligation to their memory to do my little part in the continuance of that attempt...

It's called "Liberty", it's called "America", and it's mine.

Try to take it away and we'll stop being friends....it's as easy as that. Again, nothing personal.

In the mean time, I'll keep my Barrett .50BMG clean with an oiled rag, and my finger nails cleaned with a SAK. (Wow, both gun AND knife content....all in one sentence...lol)

OwenM and Melvin-Purvis, Thanks - I was beginning to think I'd gone overboard. A review of my post re-inforces my beleif that I meant what I said and said what I meant. Also, thanks to you, Ron !!Yup, handguns are fun to shoot - a lot more challenging than shoulder arms. As to knives, so many knives, so few pockets to quote Sniiper7369.

the barret light .50 is the thing for sure - would make a helluva long range mule deer rifle in west texas, imho - a bud has 1, and it is something to shoot for sure, at about $4 round - BOOOOOMMM

Wow,
I'm suprised that a knife knut could have that sort of poor opinion towards handguns. :( Too bad!

Next he'll be saying that we have a "switchblade problem in the US". :D

Well, everyone else already has voiced my replys.

BTW: All weapons are tools, but not all tools are weapons! :p

Do it, and do it NOW! :D I spent many years shooting rifles competitively (and my wife didn't have the SLIGHTEST interest in long guns) when she mused one evening, "Gee, I wouldn't mind trying a handgun.....". The next morning I signed both of us up for the first safety and licencing courses!

Oh, yea...let's see...Glock, Glock, Sig, Colt, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, and...Glock.
