Photos Knives & Guns

Oh, yeah… 😂

I remember when .460S&W was new. I had a few friends who were big fans of .45acp. They were the kind of guys who grew up shooting their dad's 1911s and .45acp had its own mythology around their dinner tables. You know, the kind of guys who'd tease you for carrying a gun in 9mm or anything that didn't start with a "4".

We had them up to the property with a few other friends. We did our best ahead of time to organize hollow-points of similar weight in .45acp, .454 Casull, and .460S&W at 1x, 2x, and 3x the velocity. (It wasn't perfect but it was close enough.) We started out like a normal day plinking and didn't let on. We had the usual assortment of normal guns, mostly in 9mm and .45acp. Once the joshing started, we got out some melons and started our own jokes about "doubling the velocity" for "more power". The chance to do it a second time and bump up to "three times the velocity" was totally worth it. It was one of our best afternoons ever.

Yeah, large caliber revolvers are completely different animal…
‘I shot few times an Alaskan and can’t really say I had pleasant experience..
But if you like S&W, here, those are few pictures from 2014 SHOT:

I don't love the "Hillary Hole" in modern S&W revolvers but I like wheel guns in general. The big-bore stuff really is a different animal. (Nice pictures of that lady, BTW.)

The Ruger Alaskan seems like a big chunk of steel next to normal guns but it still works out comparatively like a snub-nose versus longer-barreled revolvers in "lesser magnums". With really hot or heavy loads, it isn't pleasant.

In contrast, the regular 8ish" XVR in .460S&W is surprisingly comfortable to shoot with lighter loads. The cushy grip, porting, weight and geometry all work out. Letting a 200-grain bullet fly down range at 2200fps from a handgun is still incredible. You can feel the shock wave against your hair. The results of a hollow-point on a melon are utterly ridiculous. Yet, it doesn't beat your hands the way that less powerful magnums can in smaller guns. It's properly balanced and exists at the "just right" level of ludicrous.
