Knives in Seal Tests

Miltary contracting is a complete pain in the butt. They are in another world. Too many interested parties, too many watching their backs, few decision makers and a whole lot of outmoded views. Often than not they would be better to take stuff off the shelf and see if it works. If it does then buy some more, if not try another source. If I was a small manufacturer I wouldn't even bother trying.

This Seals test did the rounds and as I remember nobody got anything much out of it other than some heartache. The last person I would want to test a piece of equipment is a soldier. There are a lot of soldiers out there. The ones who might know a thing or two about a certain piece of equipment wouldn't be asked. Have a highly trained grunt test it and you will not get the results you want or a fair assesment. Worse still have the final decision made by a retiring General and a system that takes five years to decide on what type of drawing pin should be used and any idea of rational purchasing is out of the window.

The bottom line is that the political/military aim is to turn a civi into a fighting soldier in less than thirty weeks. Equip him to fight and function on the battlefield. Most importantly, have enough citizens that have some military training if the worse happened. In the case of special forces, they are but a small but useful (expensive in resourses) part of an Army. Knives therefore are irrelevant.

One point you should not forget is MARKETING. Boy, do those SEAL/SpecOps/SOCOM/Ranger/CQC/put-your-favorite-branch-here knives of (sometimes) questionable functionality sell. You'll read statements like "tested by Navy Seals" even for products like tuff cloth. Funny that they never say what the results of those tests are. The SEALS could have tested the products and found it to be useless

Good one on the tuff cloth pal!

For those concerned about the comfort and useability of the handle wrap, we are trying to get an acquaintance of ours who has taken his PAB and MT to a limit of use seldom seen. The individual is an operator with a Force Reconnaissance Company and came into the shop this week for some more business. His knives have undergone hundreds of hours of Sea Water exposure, countless chopping tasks, hole digging to extreme levels, prying tasks and lots of cutting. He has maintained an excellent edge on his knives with his methods and to help with the ongoing battle vs. corrosion, he is generous with a rattle can. We have given the operator this website and hopefully he will check this out and respond. Many thanks to M.P.

Maybe a more sensible method of equipping the SEALS would be to give each individual Seal $500 in cash and let each one buy whatever knife they feel would get the job done and help them return from their missions alive. Might be the best $500 Uncle Sam ever spent.

Why don't we instead take that money and give it to the Marine Corps, so we can shoot live ammo. The Frogs would probably just spend it on Myoplex anyway.

Wouldn't the Marines just break whatever you bought them? And you guys wonder why they only let so many Marines play in the CAX at one time!?!
