Knives Made in China thoughts?

The only well made Chinese knife I can think of is the Spyderco Tenacious. Other than that in my opinion Chinese made knives are garbage.

I go out of my way to buy U.S. made products on a daily basis ..........its a way a life for me .

QC - that is all that matters. If you pick up a well made knife with no country of origin on it, it is still a well made knife, and visa versa.

You make an excellent point. Knives made in China will only ever be as good as the company is willing to pay for quality. If you find the product is not up to scratch that is the company's failing as they've set expectations on quality far too low.

I try not to buy anything that's made in China, especially if I have a choice.
this is how i feel. I want whats made here as much of the time as possible, with knives i usually always have that choice. With something like shoes or shorts.. its much harder. I have yet to see China put out a knife product that truly rivals an American product in the same company.. Spyderco has some interesting Chinese blades, but to me Its about buying the USA made blades. I have two Japanese Spydercos, i wish they were S30V and made HERE

Overseas knives are alright; I wouldn't rule out a good knife just because of where it's made, but I prefer US made for the same reasons you pointed out.

For example kershaw has a new usa line for 2011, which I must say looks outstanding and they have a overseas line that looks great as well. Materials for the overseas line is obviously a lower end steel, not to say the steel is poor either or quality.

If I buy an American made Kershaw it will have a blade made from foreign steel with .62% carbon content.

If I buy a Chinese made Kershaw it will have a blade made from foreign steel with .80% carbon content.

I've seen the opposite, pretty sad when the QC on a Chinese knife appears better than some US companies that have existed since long before I was born.

I talked to the president of Canal Street Cuterly at the Atlanta Knife Show and he talked about China and Scharde. He said China can under cut Scharde so bad, they could sell knives cheaper than he could buy the parts for the knife. I find it harder and harder to get knives made in Germany and the USA.

I have to admit, the knives from China are getting better, so I guess they are a good value. Still it would be nice to buy a Puma or a Boker and know it was made in Germany, not China.

bingo.....

OK, I won't bash, but I do have my own opinions, those that I may freely express due to the First Amendment to the US Constitution, something I've defended for 19 years. My comments relate to the fact that the US once had manufacturing industries, like metals, textiles, etc. but I can't go to REI, Home Depot, AAFES BX/PX, or anyplace else without having to dig through the PRC-made items! If I can't find an American-made product, I'd at least like to get something from a more friendly foreign country. I have four Chinese-made knives, three of which are crap that refuse to take an edge or have fit and finish issues.

I'ts always a big selling point for me when a knife is made in the US...i won't buy a knife "made in china"...My Gayle Bradley KILLS me everytime i see the big "Taiwan" name on the blade.

The Chinese market can be just like any other market, there is bad and there is good. Sometimes there is even VERY good. Now many of us are biased because our particular knife market has been flooded with bad companies, with little thought to a well designed knife, mass producing rubbish knives and shipping them over here. But to discount the quality of all knives from one large country because of that would be foolish.

I'm not going to get into the economic bit about who supporting who, if you feel you have to support an American company, there are plenty of inexpensive quality knives to be had.

I've bought knives made in China from several American manufacturers. I've had no complaints on the quality.

IMO you can buy poorly made knives from pretty much every country in the world, if you go cheap. But you can also buy knives of good quality made in every country in the world if you are willing to pay for the quality.

Without imports in their line-up, one could only wonder where a few meaningful, volume American manufacturers would be.

There are reasons why you don't see many new upstart American manufacturers other than those who do low volume, high dollar, specialty blades.

like anything else i dont think it matters where the product comes from, but the quality control that the company has is much for important, i think just because its made in usa or japan doesnt make it any better just they tend to have better quality control, im sure some stuff made in usa or japan can be junk to. i recently bought 2 knives made in china tenacious and a kershaw nerve. i must say they are pretty nice same as japan spyderco just different steel

If this discussion turns to China-bashing or the politics of economic relations, I will close it.

You are welcome to those opinions and we have a Political Arena for you to express them, but not here, not in a knife discussion forum. The First Amendment keeps Congress from exercising prior restraint on free speech. It has no authority over a privately-owned website. Please respect the rules of this forum.

China can tool up for anything made in the world.
Quality, or lack of it, is all in the specs supplied by the contractor.
