Knives & Motorcycles

That's one thing I hear a lot from riders traveling through from other places/states. They tend to always comment about how much they like the roads around this part of country and will travel here just for that. I may be a bit guilty of taking it all for granted.

Check out “The Art of Riding Smooth” by James Ford. I enjoyed that book. He’s located in Maryland and gives tips and info about the area.

Here's my list of old bikes, gs 500, zx6, yzf600, r6, f4, superhawk 1000, rc 51

I usually carry a Case or a SAK more often than not and at home I'm using an Endura or see other Spyderco.

What part of PA are you in?

I'm in the Pittsburgh area, and I gotta agree, we have some of the best riding around...
I don't have to go more than 30 min. out of town, and I can be on some great roads. And an hour in any direction and I'm into the Laurel Highlands, northern West Virginia, or the rolling hills of southern Ohio. I've ridden all up and down the eastern part of the U.S., and the only better riding area is around the smokies (if you haven't, make the trip down to ride RT 129 a the Tail of the Dragon).

I'm in between Harrisburg and State College(that's how I usually have to explain it). Juniata County, just a small rural county really. But we've got mountains on both sides so there's really no end of trails around here. On most of my rides I'll just go exploring, which is half the fun anyway. If I find a good trail I'll come back to it. That's one aspect of the KLR I really love, I can take that bike anywhere. The Ninja was great for highway and paved roads, but you would never see me trail riding that, haha.

I've yet to make the trip down to Dragons Tail, but I definitely need to! I've seen a lot of videos on YouTube and it looks ridiculously fun. I don't think I'd take a KLR on it, though. I'm sure it'd be fine, but you really wouldn't get the most out of it on a bike like that, that's where the 600 would have reigned supreme. Hell, I can turn that '87 just by pushing it over and sitting straight as an arrow the whole time. If I decide to go the Supermoto route(as is what most are doing these days), I'd definitely make the journey. That'd make for a great time.

Used to do a lot of exploring on both woods bikes and dual sports. Unfortunately, I haven't ridden off-road in almost 20 years. Good trails around here are getting harder to come by as well, since they keep developing further and further out of the city. Many of the old trails simply don't exist anymore.

The 600's perfect for the Dragon. I've done it a few times. First time was on an 81 Suzuki GS-850g - bit of a tank, but did pretty well. The last time was on my ZX-10 posted above - plenty of power to climb the mountain, but more of a sweeper type of bike. The best time, though, was on my old 83 750 Interceptor - that bike just danced through those twisties so damn easily!

If you ever get the opportunity, don't hesitate. It'll be one of the best runs you'll ever have.

There are about 20 bikes out in my storage and garage, including airhead BMWs, Guzzis, Jawas, CZs, MZ, Allstate Puch, Honda, Triumph, Cagiva, a KLR 650, a KTM 640, and a bunch of Suzuki dirt bikes and dual sports. Most recently, My riding has been off-road and off-pavement riding, especially adventure touring in the western US and northern Mexico. I used to think of myself as a BMW guy, until some years ago I took a count and found out I am really more of a Suzuki guy.

Most of my adult life has been about riding motorcycles in as many different ways as I could manage, having a lot of great adventures, making a lot of friends, and accumulating a fund of stories, some reduced to writing, many more retold around the campfires.

For many years before I took up offroad riding I did a lot of touring and rallying, which informed my choice of knives, Opinels, SAKs and the original Leatherman. Every bike I toured on had at least two of those three stashed on it somewhere. The other two knives tha usually came along were my Tapio puukko and a small Anza that did everything from cutting sausage to scraping gaskets. I always thought a Kabar Marine knife would serve my purposes well, as I saw a lot of guys using them in camp. My wife finally gave me one, but I have yet to take it camping. If I had known about Moras back then, i would probably have used one.

What year and displacement is your Ninja? Aftermarket exhaust? Susspension? Re-tuned EFI?
2015 636, slip on exhaust. Everything else is stock.

Well, except the windscreen, integrated tail lights, throttle lock.

This was my 85 Magna 700, in the back - packed up and loaded for a 4 day trip up and back on the blue ridge parkway - at the time I was EDCing a Buck Mayo Cutback - this was 2014

Since August 2015, its a Kawi Vulcan 900Custom - and for the last few months, thanks to McFeeli up there, my EDC is a Spyderco Domino

Current mounts are a H-D Road King, H-D 883 Iron, Suzuki Bandit 1250S and a Suzuki DR650.
There have been many formers over the years.

As for knives, too many to keep track of - let alone list but I generally will have a Leatherman of one iteration or another on me along with an Emerson or a ZT 630, which I really like. When in The Keys, Bimini or in/around salt water I always take a Spyderco Pacific Salt. I also like my Sebenza 25 and don't even count the various SAKs I have here there and often in my pocket as well.

As for fixed blades, I am a Becker fan through and through; Ethan's designs hit all the marks throughout the range of the models depending on my mission profile. I have a fondness for the Busse Basic #7 and have used one of them for chopping, batoning, field dressing deer and foot prep, but mostly use the Beckers now.

Ducati looks good cf. :)

I've had too many bikes and knives over the years to remember them all. Been ridin' since I was 5 when the Old Man built me the fastest minibike in town. I had a Mustang that topped out at about 60 mph.

I was 8 when I got my first real street bike, an imported Suzuki 2 stroke 150 cc street bike, after that I had everything from a Jawa CZ dirtbike, Suzuki RMs, GSX R1100, GT380/3 2 stroke Suzuki, Honda CB500T, CB750/4, a couple of Norton Commandos, Kawasaki KZ650 KZ1000, Z1R turbo, Kawasaki H2 /3

(love that motor)

, Liberty edition AMF Harley Sportster, the current bike I love so much I bought 2. I had to sell my first one when I blew my knee apart and to pay for a trip to Hungary with my daughter. After my knee replacement and a year of therapy I was able to ride and released by the doctor I bought a second road sofa. My vintage 1985 Yamaha Venture Royale. the most comfortable bike I've ever been on and still handle like a sport bike, well as much as a 900 lb sport bike would. ;)

Here she sits in the garage for the last 3 years awaiting the doctors release and ok that my shoulder can handle the weight. I vow to be on the road by next spring whatever it takes. It kills me to see the bikes ridin' past me in my cage.

Mom's BF's BMW he sold to some famous star out on the west coast, either Leno or Bronson bought it but at least I did get to ride it. :)

My KZ1000, one of my favorite rides, carried a Schrade Old Timer LB8 or a 51OT

Jumped time and fired 180* out sprayin' fuel through the velocity stacks on the carbs, if I woulda had an air box this woulda never happened. The flames woulda snuffed out in the air box and went out from lack of O2.

After the fuel line caught on fire it took 8 minutes to render a once very fast bike into a piece of lawn art. I carried a Buck Ti 186 and a BM AFCK at the time

Customs, Sebenzas, SwampRats HRLM and Scrapyard 311 were the typical carries along with my pistol.

At least it's been garage kept and occasionally ran to circulate some oil and put fresh fuel in the lines.

I ride a 1988 BMW R100GS. When on the bike I usually have a SAK, or a Buck Mini Spitfire. I just got a Case mini Copperlock I may carry when wearing moto specific pants with zippered pockets, i.e. they don't lend themselves to pocket clips and the copperlock is nice and thin. Really been liking the SAK waiter though.....lightweight, combo can/bottle opener/pry bar, reasonably sized blade, eyeglass screwdriver. Sometimes I carry a Bear & Son medium stockman I've carried a lot over the years or a Schrade Pal.
The BMW is a good old bike. Other bikes have come and gone, including Harley, Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha, but the BMW just keeps hanging around. I retired almost 6 years ago and planned to buy a new bike. Then I go ride the BMW and the urge for a new bike tends to go away. The only problem with it, is its old so it takes a little more tlc.
Started riding in 1973.

I ride two six cylinder Honda’s (1999 Valkyrie Supervalk & 2003 Goldwing) and an immaculate 1981 CB900C Custom. I ALWAYS have a GEC of one sort or another in one pocket and a Zero Tolerance in the other.

3 bikes, 16 cylinders!
