I smoked cigarettes for 35 years. Started on Marlboro reds in middle school, behind. The bleachers, with my friends at HS football games. Both my parents smoked at the time, so neither noticed when I came home smelling like it.
Sometime shortly after, I also discovered pot (and even harder substances). Smoked it all through high school, college, and into my mid 20’s. After a while, I just stopped enjoying it, as it made me lazy and tired. Plus my wife didn’t smoke it, and I wasn’t hanging with the same old HS friends I used to.
But quitting smoking? Damn, I must have done it 4 or 5 times over the last 11 years. That’s how old my daughter is. I quit when I found out we were pregnant. Then a few months later, work stress started me back up. Tried a few more times over the years - Chantix, nicotine gum, the patch, even cold turkey - eventually I’d start back up after a few months. Then COVID hit, and bam, I was furloughed from work. Wouldn’t you know it, I stay away from the office, and I was able to break the habit (the last 11 years, I only smoked at work, as not to get it anywhere near my daughter). Haven’t had a smoke since the end of March, which is almost 7 months, and the longest I’ve ever gone since I started 35 years ago...
and I don’t plan on going back to it!
But....
I have always enjoyed a nice cigar or two on occasion. Not too often, maybe once every month or two, sitting around a campfire, or catching up with old friends. And they pair quite well with a nice bourbon and a fixed blade.
