Knives on "Doomsday Preppers" - Holy Cow !

The sad thing is people will spend alot of money for those craptastic knives when a Mora and a Tramontina or Imacasa machete would be 1000x's better. Firefighter would be better off with a spear from Cold Steel or making one out of a broomstick and an old thrift store full tang kitchen knife.

"Hoarding" knives? Couldn't we all be accused of that? We are certainly not true 'hoarders' - I've seen the shows... you have to have garbage everywhere... and stacks of take-out/delivery pizza boxes! My wife 'caught' me saving the Hillshire deli meat containers... pointed out the stacks of them one 'hoarder' had on the next show we caught. I miss my parts/ammo boxes!

Stainz

PS No one else preparing for Zombies? Some knife/ammo makers have gotten on that bandwagon already!

interesting is the effect that the show has had on so may people

I havent seen it but I was talking to a girl who was watching it , and laughing at how cute they were with their bug out preperations and food storage

for the stir I told her I have a bug out bag and I store food as well , she near dropped her phone :)

after explaining about bushfire and flood risk , and being cut off with no power at times , it made sense a bit to her

she still thinks that people in a city preparing for any disaster tho is odd .. when you have people to deal with that , why prepare?

I am wondering why would anyone make a big negative / crazy type stereo type out of it ... when its actually good sense ? who is behind this conspiricy ?, if I could spell illimuniaty Id probably blame them

I like that part of your story involving knives as a tradeable item as I too believe that they can and will be somewhat a valueable trade/barter item if something serious happens. I figured that alot of people that dont carry knives, might end up needing one so they would be good to barter. I always try to think of other EDC type items that would make good bartering items!

For the record, I am not a prepper but I did stash away alittle silver, in case I need some for trading / purchasing items I need.

I dont have a hundred knives but I do have more than I have people in my house!! :)

I think the guy on one of the shows who was stockpiling liquor as a future exchange item has the right idea. Things like liquor and ammunition will become currency in a post-apocalyptic world.

Another one might be tobacco!

If you guys want to have something to barter with do this.
Buy some garbage bags.
Buy an ice making machine.
Buy a generator and a few gallons of gas.

Why? Because the most valuable thing when the power goes out is ice. Some people like diabetics can't even live without cold storage. You're welcome. :D

I watch the show. I find it amusing myself. I believe in the simple idea behind the show - "be prepared". I just don't think taking to the extremes that is portrayed is realistic. I'm not sure if a pandemic, solar flare, or dirty bomb will hit anytime soon but everyone should have "some" food, water, radios, flashlights, batteries, basic medical supplies, weapons, etc on hand in case of an emergency. I'm not sure you need a years worth of food and water, or suggesting you empty your 401K to pay for a bunker, but I folks should have a basic set of supplies and gear on hand.

I keep a BoB in my truck and keep enough food and water for two weeks in my basement. I have radios, batteries, water purification, tools, and weapons (not meant to be an all inclusive list of course). I like many folks here, as a camper and hiker, I have the usual assortment of firemaking, shelter buidling, foraging, and trapping tools and the know-how to use them. Be prepared (not crazy).

that show is the worst possible thing for communities like ours. I'm talkin' the gear community. it ropes us in with paranoid loons and nutjobs. obviously because those are the most entertaining people with ties to our community that they could find, it wouldn't be entertaining if they showed what most of us are, level headed responsible people who like to be prepared, just in case, but don't let it run/ruin our lives. its a shame that this is how the masses will be seeing the gear community

I really wish people would stop perpetuating this urban myth. Insulin can stay good unrefrigerated for a long time. I have used insulin that has been stored in a car glovebox for over a year. No it is not best practice but we don't all die within a week if we don't have cold storage.

As for the show..... Somewhat entertaining but way out of reality.
