Knives stolen by Tsa in checked luggage

Less than 7 hours driving trips, I definitely prefer driving. To and from the airport, waiting in the line, Security checks, anxiety, and now plus the risk of knives being stolen from checked bags as well as covid19 just doesn't not make flying a good choice (it doesn't save much time either).

I might even stretch that 7 to 8 or 9 these days. I don’t have to 😷 in my car. 😉

I did make a mistake and lost a Leatherman Squirt P4 to the TSA. I forgot I had it in my carry on/computer bag.

A friend of mine had a Spyderco disappear from his bag. It pissed me off, because I had given it to him. He complained and got toss-all for his efforts.

I haven't flown anywhere in over five years. I just can't take it. 12 hour drive, drive that requires stopping for a night, literally THROUGH a blizzard that turned an 11 hour drive into 16 and a half. I even drive across the country to visit family. I. Do. Not. Fly. Fortunately, I can drive, I like driving, have a reliable vehicle, and can say no to work trips I don't want to do.

Hope you get some satisfaction from the airline.

While in hotel school back in the day 2009-2013 I travelled internationally between Athens-Amman, I always had my Chef knife set with me, I think I even took it to Dubai once, never had anything stolen. I also know that many Chefs travel with very expensive knives & so this is not normal & you should definitely talk to the airline.

Five years ago I was one of those frequent flyers. I’d leave late Sunday and get home Friday night just to do it all again. Two, more than likely three weeks per month.

My last flight was February of 2020 just before we shut down for The Rona and I don’t miss it at all.

I miss racking up Marriott points and getting free vacation stays but, I haven’t vacationed in just as long so, 🤷🏻‍♂️.

The most expensive knife that I ever put into a checked bag was a ZDP-189 Delica 4. Luckily it arrived safely. Nowadays I just put in a SAK. I have not air traveled for two years.

The last time I flew was a month ago with my wife in lieu of a 12 hour drive. For our return flight counting time to drive to the airport, turn in the rental car, go through security, wait for a flight delayed over an hour, wait a very long time to get our luggage then take a taxi home it took nearly 10 hours. The flight out was not quite so bad although getting through the rental car company was a circus. My wife bought the tickets so I don't know how much they cost but the rental car for the time we were there was very expensive. I would always prefer to drive but after my wife and I drove that trip the last time she said she wasn't driving again, she would fly.

When I'm flying, assuming I'm checking bags, I always pick the absolute cheapest POS knife I have to take along with me. The last time I did a long flight I actually drove out with my daughter and flew back. I carried a cheap box cutter with me going out and gave it to her. She already has enough of my good knives.

I only fly to see my son, and he kept a $20 Dozier Folding Hunter and a Classic SD for me at his home to use while there. He moved, and can't find the Dozier. Lol. Can't win

I usually only pack a SAK if going on a trip. I usually stick it inside a pair of socks in the suitcase. If some lowlife steels it I can easily replace it.

Hate to hear this. I pretty much live in two locations on literally opposite corners of the country (PNW/FL), so I travel back and forth fairly frequently. When I travel back home sometimes I stay for a up to a month or even longer, so I like to take a knife with me that I enjoy. Most recently is has been my Sebenza (plus some others). I also bring a Swisstool which isn't exactly cheap. Luckily the Surefire Aviator can go in the carryon, and then in my pocket where it belongs as soon as I pass thorough security. I've been lucky thus far, but I have also considered just mailing it all to myself (not that that is without risk), and hearing this is nudging me in that direction for the future. So far I've used two methods. I either put all my eggs in one basket in a Maxpedtition pouch, or it put everything in different pockets of different pants that I'm packing. Either way it weighs heavy on me the entire time, and I check for everything and put it in my pocket right there in the baggage claim. I've even had my luggage temporarily misplaced due to flight delays/changes, but still without a problem. Damn man, this really sucks, brother.

I'm not familiar with the logistics of it all, but I can't help but wonder if particular airlines or airports are worse than others, or if it is just a roll of the dice.

I have had 4 blades (including my custom blades), 2 flashlights, and several other smaller items stolen on 2 different flights. What makes it bad is when you get to the hotel and find a TSA security ticket on the top of your clothing with the items missing underneath.I tried to file a claim with the airlines. They said to talk to TSA. I filed a claim with TSA. They did pay for the custom blades, but it was 13 months until I received a check.

I used to travel with $3,000 to $4,000 worth of paint spraying equipment in my checked bag.

I guess it’s hard to be upset over a $20 knife when the thieves pass on a $750 spray gun.

Never put anything in checked luggage you can't afford to lose. A Swiss army knife is a great choice. An Ontario rat folder is a good idea. A jarbenza as a decoy might be a good plan. Also putting it in a pants pocket or socks is a good idea. It won't stop a truly determined thief, but will deter the casual or hurried one.

actually thats a good idea - put knife in a ziplock bag, then wrap with underwear liberally stained & smelly?

sigh, it's sad that it's come down to this in north america
I distinctly remember friends making this point when flying to the carribean in 80s & 90s, 'you can't trust anything down there, they'll steal stuff from your luggage'

this led to the adoption of hard plastic shell luggage & more sturdy key locks
