Hey y'all,

I was just wondering if you have any knives that have cut you pretty bad? What knife/knives? Any good stories to share? Did the knife "fail" under normal use? Just a random thought I had.

For me it's most of them, at some point. :D

Usually happens when I'm exploring a new knife, getting used to its action and quirks, and fiddling with it. The only notable exception I can think of was when I closed a knife I was quite familiar with, my EDC Emerson Mini CQC-7BW, without looking (not unusual!) but also too quickly, and neatly sliced off the tip of my thumb.

It turned out to be more like a broad cut across all the skin at the top, as it didn't take much meat with it. It grew back just fine.

Haha me too:D Yeah I was just closing my big ol Cold Steel Holdout 1 today and apparently my pinkie finger was in one of the handle holes... It just barely fit in there but the blade neatly cut the tip almost off...

2016. House Of Blades. Checking out the ZT 0450 at the checkout counter. These knives have a really stiff detent (but I didn’t know that at the time). So I’m looking like an idiot/weakling in front of the sales person. By the time I’m done handling it, I had cut myself twice! It was really embarrassing.

It is Never the knifes fault.

Either I was careless, or someone else was. The knife is inanimate, and cannot jump up and stab/cut me.

That is like saying that a gun shot someone or a spoon made someone fat... It is always the operator, not the tool...
Sorry about that. I know what you are talking about and I completely agree with you. I meant that part as like a liner lock fail or if the knife “failed” on you while using it.

Got a decent cut on my finger once as a kid with sheep's foot blade on my Schrade 34OT.

It was absolutely my fault and not the knife's.

If I really like a knife, I end cutting myself with it simply because I screw around with it too much.

I've never had a knife that failed or was responsible for the cuts in any way.

Cut myself on Xmas. Cutting a zip tie while talking and not paying attention with an inexpensive Tanto knife I got that morning.

Generally if I really like a knife I will carry it often enough that it will eventually bite me.

That said I have only bit badly by two knives. My Emerson Super karambit under some dumb circumstances. Also my Shivworks clinch pick. I dropped the clinch pick tip straight down and it hit my middle toe. The tip went straight to the bone and bounced. Blood came right up out of the cut.

Here’s how you know I’m a knife nut. My first thought was “thank god it hit my foot, atleast the tip won’t be hurt. “

Edit: forgot to add I cut the tip mostly off my right middle finger while cleaning a kitchen knife my friend used to spread butter.

Two knives bit me pretty good. One was a Ringed Razel (CRKT) that I tried to cut something with driving just after buying it. Just not used to having that sharp squared edge. Use it along with it's folding cousin as work knives.
SGB Puma Elk Hunter model.... dropped it in the store handling it and tried to catch it so it wouldn't hit the floor. Lots of blood. Bought it and haven't used it since. Not a bad knife, but I like the Cabelas Buck 192 wildlife series knife better.

Had a cheap kershaw in my teens get me really good, I was being dumb and cause severe joint damage.

Edit: can't use the damn edit function properly on my dumb phone

Hahaha me too! I have flipped open a couple knives that flew out of my hands and my first thoughts were "I wished I could have caught that before it hit the floor" Thankfully none of them suffered any damage!

My Ontario SP5 bit me pretty good one time when I decided that after a few good double IPAs, it was a good time to sharpen her... even more. I was careless and well you know the rest.

Meant to add this to my last post, but I've cut myself four times with my Boker Chicken hawk Ax. It's a production version of the American Kami Micro Ax. It's a joy to hold and the ergos are fantastic with multiple hand holds and grips available.

I currently have two scars and two small cuts from it. Clearly a design flaw.....:D

E5DF51E5-2B97-4A41-B301-070249710FEE.jpeg The worst bite I ever received was from a Kabar Dozier. For whatever reason, I thought it would be acceptable to tighten an Emerson pivot with the spine of the Dozier. I was taught a pretty good lesson in the form of numerous stitches and permanent numbness in my pointer finger. To boot, it happened late on a Sunday so I had to find a way to stabilize the gash until morning.

I cut myself today on a Cold Steel Broken Skull. I was cleaning it out with a Q Tip and...yeah it was pathetic. And bloody. Very deep at the tip of my thumb but no loss of feeling and a clean cut so I think it will heal on its own.

Little bites, knuckle or otherwise: plenty.
I’ve often stated that until the knife shows you a little love, it isn’t truly yours. Of course I could say the same thing about scratching, dropping, or otherwise gooning it up. :D

I don’t think I’ve ever had a bite big enough to need stitches.

Everyone of them has cut me or nicked me. I don't consider mine unless it's drawn blood. Whether it's a drop or two requiring nothing more than a bandaid or nearly severing a digit cutting all the way to the bone and severing tendons along the way, (thankfully the latter are few and far between.)
