Knives That Have "Bit" You?

Don't reach across the sharpening bench. It bites.

Had an Opinel No 8 in the clamp back when I was using a wicked edge. I usually clamped them in with the point toward me. Preferred that POV while working. It did however leave the point exposed to, well, my arm.

Made for a unique shot of the Manix I was carrying that day though:

Got a nice bite from my Carothers Behemoth Chopper recently. The blade was wedged pretty deeply into a branch and my index finger barely grazed the edge in front of the choil when I was pulling it out. I should have been wearing gloves. Always a lesson to be learned with accidents (like this).

I irrigated the wound with Chlorhexidine and used NewSkin for about 2 weeks. I probably could have used 2-3 stitches (especially in the knuckle crease) but the NewSkin did an amazing job keeping it sealed.

On Christmas I was using my Marauder to cut some zap straps on a toy that was given to my son as sizzors could not get it done... and when one strap cut the part of the toy popped off as well, which was supposed to stop the blade, and the tip of the blade stabbed me directly in the side of my left index finger at the joint.

It was deeeep. I think it hit bone.

Good news it was narrow as only the tip made penetration with no slicing. I closed the wound with Crazy Glue right away as I always do to skirt the need for stitches. I'll have a scar to remember this one.

No pic of the wound, but this is the blade that got me:

View attachment 825846 The worst bite I ever received was from a Kabar Dozier. For whatever reason, I thought it would be acceptable to tighten an Emerson pivot with the spine of the Dozier. I was taught a pretty good lesson in the form of numerous stitches and permanent numbness in my pointer finger. To boot, it happened late on a Sunday so I had to find a way to stabilize the gash until morning.

We showing off scars? This is from my Emerson Super karambit. Under some real dumb circumstances.

IMG_5927.JPG IMG_5925.JPG About 18 years ago I got into it with a box cutter and it drew first blood. 7 stitches 3 in to close an artery 4 out to close the wound. Ultimately I was victorious when I burned it into a puddle of melted plastic and a few bits of steel.
10ish years ago I tried my luck again with a Buck Odyssey. Again I didn't fair too well and this cut started at the center of my thumbprint and stopped at my finger nail. No stitches, though I certainly should have, I went with peroxide-butterflies & tape.

Both absolutely my fault.

I've had two serious wounds, one 100% my fault, the other... well read on.

The first was shortly after acquiring my Boker Urban trapper (Cocobolo, 'natch). Admiring how light it was, I spun it off my desk, and it promptly tumbled a foot or so before plunging itself .5-.75in into my calf muscle. A lot more shock than pain or blood.

My worst bite came from a Kershaw Leek. I was carrying it at work for light-duty packaging opening, clipped to my right rear pant pocket. It had opened partially in my pocket over the course of the day, but not fully because the blade was facing the seam of my pant's pocket. Hand went in, felt a little nibble, hand came out holding a knife covered in blood. The real mistake I made was continuing to pull the Leek out after it already nipped me, made the gash 25x worse than it should have been. I'll never trust another one of those light deploy assist knives again. Fortunately the whole debacle didn't warrant stitches, but it sure made a mangled mess of my hand and bloody pants.

Hey y'all,

I was just wondering if you have any knives that have cut you pretty bad? What knife/knives? Any good stories to share? Did the knife "fail" under normal use? Just a random thought I had.

Ha, ha, ha,
at first from the title I thought you meant are there any knives that "got under my skin" and wouldn't leave me alone until I bought them.

You mean drew blood.
Yes.
Two of my very favorite knives that just happen to be Christmas presents to myself.

Lol that coach from home movies with the swords. Replace that infomercial with a computer and you have 99% of bladeforums members pegged.

Let's see, I cut the tip off of my left index finger with the first Buck I ever owned. Before that, I was trying to slice a golf ball in two with a traditional of some sort. I still have the scar on the back of my left hand. Both of these were ages ago when I was in my early teens. Just two of the many times over the years. Normally, it happens when the knife is new. There is always some sort of learning curve.

Besides, the knife is not truly yours until it bites you.

I had just finished sharpening my mini Grip and was walking into the next room to get a look at the blade in better light. Naturally, I was flicking the knife open and closed along the way. I fumbled a flick and the knife was on its own. My first thought was the pristine edge smashing onto the tile floor and ruining my work. Before I could re think my strategy, I had stuck my leg out to cushion the fall. Well, I ended up with a hole in my favorite jeans... and shin.
On the bright side, the cut was so clean it healed really quickly.

Had an Ontario SP43 fall from a magnetic wall hanger on top of my bare foot and cut through all the extensor tendons of my toes. An artery was also severed. Photo was taken after returning from hospital, 4 days later.

Photo quality is bad, but it's hard to do things when standing on one leg. Everything you see is left where it was right after the incident. The big blotch of blood and the knife are about next to where my foot was. There was more blood on the carpet behind the position from which this photo was taken.

8 weeks of wearing a cast, 4 more to go. I'm just glad it wasn't the axe that was hanging right next to the knife :D

Dang!!!! You didn’t get “bit” by your knife, it took a chunk out of you. She’s a keeper.

Ive been cut by several knives.Screenshot_20180109-095920.png
Including my previous significant others PM2 (which i bought her). Played with it and flicked it open over and over getting used to the lock. And poof flicked it right into the tup of another finger. They are extremely pointy...
Cold steel Rajah 3. Not telling the story on that one. Completely my fault for being stupid.
SSL Time Splitter XL. I had just sharpened it right off the grinder and was adding the requested 20 degree edge for the customer. Using a lansky system. Now Z-Finit takes a razor sharp edge quite easy, so it was very sharp off the grinder. I slipped or over pulled the sharpening stone, and sliced a part of my middle finger clean off. Just past the last knuckle before the nail.

That little white spot is me on the blade. Sliced that skin clean off.

No serious cuts from any of my pocket knives but most all of them have bit me or are too new to have bit me yet but will I assume bite me at some point.

G Gvard Wow, buddy. I hope everything turns out ok for you. Stick with any rehab they get you doing. Tendons can be sticklers.

Got pics of the knife? ;)

ZT 0566. I closed the blade across the tip of my thumb. I actually heard it slicing through. I looked down to see my thumb tip flat across the top. On the ground by my feet was the tip. Blood was pissing out of my thumb for about an hour. To this day it still hasn't grown back all the way, and is still somewhat flat.
