knives that surprised you..........

The best knife i ever got that I didn't expect much from was an outdoor edge swing blaze. It is on the pricier side but it is made in China so i didn't think much of the knife. But wow it is a good quality blade, great steel, and came with a great edge.

After staring at them for nearly a year, I finally pulled the trigger on a zero tolerance 0551. MAN! Was I surprised. I love that thing. I always figured I'd like it, but words can't describe how great I think this knife is. I've got a feeling that this one is a keeper!

Spyderco Dragonfly.. I'm a big guy and the way that little knife is made, it seems to be much bigger in the hand.
Byrd Cara Cara (original FRN) .. I sold my Enduras because I like this better. Sharpens in a jiff and is razor sharp. I prefer the blade shape and cutting edge to the Enduras.

A buck nobleman, that one surprised me, it's an awesome little knife. It is sturdy and a great little slicer. It has a bit of heft for its size but nothing to really complain about.

Spyderco Paramilitary 2 would be at the top of my list. It surpasses everything I expected or read about. I liked it so much I bought a second one within less than a week of owning the first.

Other than that the Chief Brand trapper slip joint I bought from SMKW is simply outstanding. The fit and finish are incredible for a Chinese knife.

Maybe not surprised, but I marvel at every Victorinox I own for it's build, function and relatively low cost. The SRM 710 was a surprise because of it's cost however.

Victorinox non-serr Trekker. TOUGH knife, awesome fit and finish and the price... !

Spyderco Military. Bought one and within a month had three. (Like everyone says) carries awesome for having a 5in handle!

Manix 2. Awesome ergos, too wide to carry. Let down.

1. Spyderco Military. I bought my first just because of the blade steel, turns out the rest of the knife was even better!

2. Victorinox. Solid craftsmanship and everything is mirror polished.

3. Cold Steel 2011 Voyager. For a plastic handle it has surprisingly little flex and the pivot is very smooth.

I definitely agree with Victorinox. Pretty rustproof, decent slicer, and all the gadgets you need. Not to mention that they're pretty solidly put together for what they are.

I bought a Blade Tech Ganyana Lite with orange scales on a whim to fill out an order, thinking it might be a good knife for my younger son for camp. IIRC I paid <20 bucks for it, I figured if it was a piece of junk I'd just toss it in my tool pouch. I was really surprised at the decent quality, I may just pick up one for myself in OD.

I was also pleasantly surprised at my Opinel #8, another impulse buy. For <10 bucks it shouldn't be as good as it is, I love it for what it is.

Victorinox Farmer: Man, what a superbly useful little SAK. Everything you need, nothing you don't. I can't leave the house without it.

Al Mar SERE 2000: Good-- fit, finish, construction rivals custom folders. Bad-- high sabre grind renders the knife pretty useless for a pocket knife, unless you just want it for stabbing. Still something to hold on to, however.

Busse CGFBM: I know it's hard to be pleasantly surprised by a Busse if you have owned them before. But I bought this one on a whim in the 2nd hand forum. Don't know why. Even though I own and have owned the massive Mistress LEs (satin finish), this combat model seemed almost sleek and sexy and is all around more useful in the woods. It's black G-10 mag scales and the grey finish is a dynamite combination that looks like something that would be found on the Dark Knight's utility belt. And it's very sharp for a 1/4" flat/sabre grind. I'm very impressed by this blade. It's a stylish brute of a chopper.

BM Rant 515 D2: Used the heck out of it this season. Exelled at food prep, fire making, fish cleaning. everything!
Spyderco Paramilitary 2: Only had it a little over a week, but WOW!

Positive:
I would go with my Spyderco Foliage Green UKPK. Bought it just to have a legal EDC for the U.K. After I started carrying it, I realized that for 95% of my uses, a slipjoint of this style is all I will ever need. One hand opening, finger choil to prevent accidental closure, and still tough and light weight. Started a little mini obsession with Spyderco Slipits for me.

Negative:
Buck Knives in general. I have owned four or five Buck Knives over the past few years, and every single one I have bought has had terrible fit and finish. All have unfinished edges, gaps in liners, badly mismatched edge grinds, off center blades, or incredibly weak springs or super hard to open nail breakers (for the slipjoints). I kept giving them a chance due to their low price point, and generally positive opinions on the forums, but I regret every Buck I have ever purchased. *Correction* Actually, the Paklite Skinner I got from Walmart was pretty good, so maybe its just their folders that are junk.

kershaw skyline. at the price point, you get butter smooth action, fast flipping, great fit and finish and a pretty damn good steel. Mine is the 13c26 variant and easily gets face shaving
