You know - those knives you see/get, and think "it'd be perfect, if they had just..."

A couple off the top of my head:

Paramilitary 2 - Bearing pivot. No more blade play, with the bonus of even smoother action.
Kershaw Speedform II - Flipper. Seems like an oversight.
Endura Wave - Liner/framelock. As it stands, the lock can "bounce" out of the tang due to the way a lockback works.
Gayle Bradley Air - A freaking pocket clip.
Most things Cold Steel makes - Better blade steel. If they switched out AUS8 with something like 154CM, Elmax, M4, VG-10... Heck, even Sandvik, I'd buy quite a few of their products. (The Warcraft Tanto that's coming out is a heck of a step in the right direction, though...!)

ZT 0550 - A Choil and not as thick and bulky handles. Thinner behind the edge would be great.
ZT 0560 - A Choil and a little shorter blade. Thinner behind the edge.
GB Air - Pocket clip or at least a lanyard hole.
Cold Steel - Make a TI Frame Lock. With better steel.

As big a fan as I am of Cold Steel, I wish they would:

1. Adopt a new, stouter serration pattern. I much prefer PE blades, but I wouldn't mind a heavy-duty CS folder with full Spyderco-esque serrations for the odd use here and there.
2. Make a smooth area on the G-10/Grivory scales on all their folders underneath the pocket clip so they wouldnt' shred your pockets (like the famous Nuntfancy mod).
3. Abandon their Secure-Ex sheaths in favor of real Kydex, or even go with well-made Cordura sheaths.

coldsteel: better steel in the folders

crk: heat treated harder/ better steel

spyderco: sage 2 with ikbs or a bearing system and a flipper

to name a few.

Benchmade 745 Mini Dejavoo

I love the lines, but not the liner lock. Give it an AXIS-lock and a black pocket-clip able to be mounted tip-up...

The prominent tang stop and larger handles on the Bonecollector make it an unsuitable substitute for me (not to mention the wide-tip of the blade).

CRK: 60-61 HRC on their S35VN.

Kershaw Blur with a small flipper.

ZT 0200 with bearings.

Boker Burnley Kwaiken with CPM-154 instead of Aus 8.

Hell, all my folders with CPM-154.

Hinderer XM series with bearings.

CRKs with bearings.

All my unassisted folders with bearings.

All my tip up only knives available with tip down option.

If the Buck Endeavor was offered sans Serrations, It'd be a grand, budget fixed blade. I for one however, just don't care for partial serrations on a large fixed blade knife.

coldsteel: better steel in the folders
...
I think the Cold Steel Tuff Lite is by far the most attractive design with the most EDC friendly blade shape. If I could change it, I would second your better steel comment. I would also dump the cheap plastic grivory handle and (arguable I know) the back lock.

That's exactly what I did with my Alan Davis custom.

Other knives:
Native 5. Remove the backlock and add a liner lock. I'm pretty tired of the "liner locks are weak" parroting.
PM2. Shrink it. It's too big for EDC. May be the perfect knife otherwise, but not for EDC.
Strider SnG. Though I'm not a fan of frame locks, I would be willing to deal with it, if they would just provide an option for LH carry. Oh and how about a $150 version without the forced warranty.

I'm just going to focus on the knives I carry regularly (I have a much smaller collection than some here-just getting back into knives after a while) and small changes I would make:

Kershaw Tremor: Thumb studs would be awesome in addition to the flipper. Better traction on the back of the grip as well as the flipper itself.

CRKT M16-14sf: I didn't buy this knife but found it in the woods. After some TLC, it is like new and I like it fairly well. Would prefer a lower riding pocket clip as well as a more effectively designed second flipper to be used like a wave knife. I also don't care much for tanto blades.

SOG Trident: No safety (I just superglued mine open-problem solved) and a pocket clip I could grab more easily. It sits so low the clip itself must be involved in the draw. I like how discreetly it carries but think this could be improved.

Ontario RAT-2: Bought this for my wife but haven't given it to her yet (her birthday is soon!). I absolutely love this knife and find almost no faults. Will be ordering another one. Except mine won't be pink :)

Victorinox Super Tinker: Not much-maybe a better phillips screwdriver piece. It doesn't do anything great so I could make improvements but I understand it is a do-it-all kind of knife. A jack of all trades, a master of none.

Gerber Suspension Multi-tool: No real complaints. Once again the phillips head kind of sucks. And I broke the main flat head while prying. Broke while improperly used but I really don't think I was prying hard. However, I really can't fairly hold that against this tool.

My commonly used fixed blades all have their faults as well:

Buck 119: Don't care for the handle material-a little slick but the shape is super nice. Steel isn't the best though I've never had issues with it in my use. Great camp carry IMO.

Gerber Blackie Collins Dive Knife: I am not a diver but I love this for discreet carry IWB. Since I'm not carrying it in a marine environment, I adjusted the cliplock tension to release much easier. Great fixed blade for light tasks and, as a I said, comfortable and discreet carry. Grip isn't ideal but it is an exposed metal knife.

Buck Mini Mentor: More substantial grip. Better sheath. Love the blade. Very usable in 95% of tasks. Until my Rat-3 arrives, this would be the knife I would take with me if I could only have 1 knife.

Ontario RAT-3: Haven't received it yet so it is still perfect in my mind :)

Sorry for the extra long post. Like I said above, I have just recently rekindled my love of knives. I collected as a kid and teenager but kind of stepped away as an adult. That was due to becoming obsessed with a passion for everything firearms. However, I have rekindled my love of knives and look forward to rebuilding my collection. Much has been lost over the years and several moves.

Gayle Bradley Air- Stainless steel liners
PM2- 3" blade
SRM-763 (or SRMs in general)- Better blade steel. Maybe the 9Cr18MoV that's been popping up on some of those other cheap Chinese folders.
Any one of the larger Victorinox Alox models- scissors
Kershaw folders- More lefty friendly knives

I'd also like to see more pink handle scales in general, but I guess some guys just feel that their masculinity is threatened by pink knives.

Native 5. Remove the backlock and add a liner lock. I'm pretty tired of the "liner locks are weak" parroting.
I'm mostly concerned about the ones that stick out a little to make them easier to disengage and have jimping on them. I do like them and prefer them over framelocks though. I'll never understand the obsession with those.

New ZT 0566 and 0770 with KVT bearings instead of assisted open...I know they aren't even out yet but that's all I would need to be happy for a few months at least.

a XM-18 for under 500 bucks for us non LEO,Mil type.

Why does everyone think Leo and military get a special price? If IIRC Hinderer said himself that they do NOT get a special price.

And if Spyderco stop putting those stupid choils on all their knives, I'd probably buy more.

They don't? So what do they get? Call it whatever but all he was saying is, first responders get it at msrp and more often than not, everyone else has to go through the secondary market at near twice the price.

How much blade do you think is lost by having a choil? Well, probably not as much as you think:
choil/no choil

This grip would be more secure if it had a choil:

I like knives designed with choils and like knives that don't have choils also. I do find them useful and utilize it everyday during my tasks.

I couldn't trust this grip. It could use a choil:

Wouldn't take much cutting edge at all...Besides, I rarely use the last few MILLIMETERS of a blade anyway.

Oh, how about every knife without a LH clip option get one. Southpaws do buy knives too, you know.

I used to be a no-choil person.

Then I used a knife with a substantial choil. I appreciate them now, they make using a bigger blade for finer work much easier.

Staying on topic.

I never understood lock-backs still being produced when there are better locks out there. ZT uses linear locks, so it is possible to make a secure linear lock (the most "common" lock type that I prefer)..........

Why do I have to ignore such knives as the native, the delica, etc because I detest how much effort it takes to get one open. Might as not have a hole if you compare it to a linear, compression, axis, or ball-bearing.......lock-back knives just suck
