Knives that you like but you won't get because... reasons

GEC & all its ilk (sadly, wish it wasn't some kind of scalping-magnet... if people refused to pay 50%+ over msrp this might stop... or they could just start pumping out 5 times more, pretty sure the math works out better for them)

as a direct result, I'm looking at lionsteel & buck custom models for my old-timey fix

You mean he's going to stay that color?!?!?
Stay away from the cans!

I really like Tops designs. I like big blades made out of well treated simple steel. I roll my eyes and pass on most of them because their names are just too Tacticool for Tactischool. I'm like, "That's a pretty cool design with a useful sheath. Maybe I'll add that one to the cart...'Thunder Blaster Terrorist Deanimator Strike Force Freedom Eagle-Screech Team Special Ops Rockets Red Glare Gladiator'? Pass:rolleyes:"

I felt this deeply. "Oh, that one's micarta... oh, wait. Yep, GEC. Never mind." I love almost everything from the Northwoods line, but for CRK money?! C'mon, guys.

In their defense, TOPS has been moving away from their roots as "By Oper8tors, for Oper8tors", and toward an image as an outdoor adventures company, slowly retiring the covert assassination-themed names, in favor of, well, sort of what Condor is doing, naming knives after the people who designed them.

Wow, that was one entire sentence.

Now, there are still some cringe-worthy gems in their lineup, like the "Black Heat".

I respect their willingness to be silly, and I heard somewhere that Bryan and Leo are even in on the jokes.

I thought about that, but honestly the knife industry there is not paying for the war
...
what pays for it is the oil & gas, which China has agreed to buy instead of the EU... in fact, China is the main reason the ruble rebounded from the initial crash of international sanctions, and its now actually higher than pre-war if you can believe it

In the past, it was 100% about dollar cost. Now that I've reached an age when I think, "What am I going to do with that?" or "Where am I going to put that?," the decision process has changed. If my desire to buy something doesn't completely eliminate those two questions, then I don't get it.

There are several brands whose knives I enjoy the look of, with neat designs and blade shapes that I like and that appear to be well-made, and of good materials. A few of these, I've even held at knife shows. However, after a quick spot of Google-fu, I discover that they're made in China, and it becomes an instant pass for me.

If I could get a Microtech without the glassbreaker lanyard thingy, I'd own one of the Star Wars series in a heartbeat.

I agree about the glass breaker. I've got one of the Bounty Hunter edition combat troodons. Never gets carried though, between price and the goofy bright red glass breaker lol

I'll entirely skip what a million others in the thread are saying - no China, no more discussion needed so as to save the thread. Besides this! Lots of nice knives I can't justify.

Para 3 - I have a BD1N PM2 and a Sage 5 in M4. I just can't justify a Para 3, have the weight question answered, plenty of light knives, old-school or modern, got the steel answered, I just don't know what would make me get it, even though I do like it.

KA-BAR - It's quite nice, but I can't pay all that for 1095 when Ontario exists. Ontario always just seemed the smarter bet, not paying for the name.

Can you buy a GEC for a reasonable price, like, when they come out?

Tony or Reece Bose slip joints. I sold a pair of father and son barlows made for the same collector and don't regret it. Very fine knives but I can't justify the cost for something I won't use. I've sold every custom slip joint I've ever owned, used them all with the exception of the bose barlows. Too expensive for a cutting tool. Love em but I'm not wealthy.

This is my exact reasoning. Micro brands are really cranking out good looking knives, but the Chinese OEMs they’re using just ruin it for me.
