Knives With FRN Clip

Your right I'm lazy and stupid. This thread is about finding a knife with a molded clip not to discuss my car entry habits.

Never called you stupid...

There is a reason manufacturers stopped using FRN pocket clips.
You could always do what I've seen other people do, and put shrink wrap around the metal pocket clip.

I support bloody sharp's right to be lazy. There's already enough stuff to be responsible for.

The big issue is you want a clip that has more give than metal clips; but if it has that much give, it's more likely to break. I recommend a pocket sheath that you can clip to inside the pocket so the pocket clip is never exposed, yet it's still easy to access.

Either that, or just get some plastic and cut it to shape and screw it down with the screw on a regular folder.

Vintage Cold Steel and Spyderco taut still show up on the exchange here. I just picked up a vintage Dragonfly with the plastic clip

That is not a bad idea. I have some shrink wrap I will try. I also have a spray can of Plasti-Dip that may work, just not sure how thick it will coat the clip (never used it yet) and how much it will grip the pocket.

The problem is that the metal edge of the clip has put three cuts on my leather steering wheel. It's not so much the "give of the clip" but the metal edge puts a slight cut in the leather. I can feel those cuts/gouges when I drive with what was smooth leather. It's not too bad yet. So far I only have three cuts over the last five years but I quit carrying my knifes with metal clips for the last year to stop any more damage. I miss carrying my Spyderco Navajo because of it's metal clip. Fabricating a plastic replacement clip might work for my Kewshaw because it has three screws. But my Navajo has one large screw. I don't think a plastic clip will stay in place. I have had trouble with the metal clip staying in the correct position. The clip has a small detent that fits into a small hole in the handle to keep it in position. Over the years that detent has bent and I occasionally have to re-bend it. I'm going to try covering the metal clips with shrink wrap or Plasti-Dip if that does not work. I will try fabricating a plastic clip.

Just a thought, but have you ever tried slipping any one of your pocket knives down into your pocket before you get into your vehicle? And then once you have reached your destination, clipping them back onto your pocket after exiting the vehicle? Or is that simply too much of a hassle? :)

I had an early Spyderco and the integrated FRN clip would gouge and mark the wooden bedpost. Sure, metal ones can do a lot worse, some didn't, but FRN is no guarantee it will be better. I've had the scales alone do damage to my steering wheels, too.

Any hard surface with a 90 degree edge scraping across the steering wheel is going to eventually tear it up - wood, FRN, etc. I have the steering wheels and furniture that proves it to my dissatisfaction.

What do you need to do if the new knife won't stop the damage?

I recently lost my spyderco Delica with a FRN clip. I think it was while in the show watching the new Star Wars movie. Some people kept going past us and I got up and down at least six times during the movie. Besides interrupting the movie I think one of the times while sitting down the clip caught on the seat and popped the knife out of my pocket. That knife with it's FRN clip never caused any damage to my steering wheel unlike the metal clip on my Spyderco Navajo. So another knife with a FRN clip would be the best solution. That's why I'm on a quest to find another 3 inch knife with a FRN clip.
